Great replacement for Nuance OmniPage 14 for OCR
2007-06-07
ScanSoft became Nuance and let their products go downhill, especially OmniPage for OCR use. Abbyy FineReader 8.0 Pro is a fine replacement, although perhaps not as sophisticated as OmniPage 14, it is much easier to use and is quite stable, even on my new OS which is Win Vista Ultimate 64-bit! When major companies let their products get old and moldy, I always move on to another company. I am happy now with Abbyy FineReader 8. Works just fine with no hassle. Enough said.
Better than OmniPage
2007-05-15
I develop digital libraries for special and academic libraries. After testing both OmniPage Pro 15 and ABBYY Fine Reader 8.0 before embarking on OCR work-flows for a major digital repository, the OCR results were by far better with ABBYY. This was especially true when working with faded or 'garbled' text from photocopies. OmniPage might have more 'cache' and have a few more bells and whistles (i.e. automated tasks) but don't be fooled, ABBYY is hands down the better product where it counts. (I should note they both claim 99% OCR accuracy and a lot of professional reviewers claim they produce the same results. . .but after testing both, you find out that they are not even in the same league.)
Both can be freely downloaded off their respective websites for testing purposes. Try both first before making the leap!
