The series is great! The merchandise wasn't...
2008-06-26
I think the Stargate series (both Atlantis and SG-1) are great. I already had seasons 1-10 for SG-1 and had watched all of the dvd's several times. So I decided to get the season 1 of the Atlantis shows. I purchased the box set from iNetvideo along with other dvd merchandise from other sellers. iNetvideo's shipment was delivered within a couple of days prior to the the deadline date. And the shipment arrived more than week after I had already received the merchandise from the other sellers eventhough the same shipping method was used.
After inspecting the merchandise and playing only the first dvd, I did gave an excellent seller's feedback. When I finally was ready to play the 5th and last dvd I instantly realized that something was wrong. The exact same episodes that are on Disk 1 Volume 1 were on Disk 5 Volume 1. I removed the dvd from the player and looked at the label - the label said Disk 5 Volume 1. I read the DVD case cover and it listed the episodes that were suppose to be on that disk but were not.
Now, how one dvd can get mislabeled and placed into a 2005 box set without a massive recall because other customers experienced the same problem is strange to say the least. My girl friend and I have order quite of few dvd through Amazon's website and this is the first time there has been a problem. I removed the feedback that I had previously give and contacted the seller via the Amazon website about this defect.
After two and no response from the seller, I contacted Amazon. They quickly responded and taking care of the situation with their A-Z guarantee. Meanwhile, I have download the last 4 episodes using Amazon's Unbox feature. I want to view these esipodes and found out what happens. I really like this series - it's as good as SG-1. Great originality in the storylines. There's actiion, humor and sometimes a tear jerker (my girl friend, of course). The characters every once in awhile make a comment about Star Trek (in a good way - I like Star Trek, too).
After I am refunded, I'll be returning the box set to the seller and will probably just download the rest the season 1. Lesson learned - watch all the dvd's before giving a seller's rating. I'll be purchasing season 4 but not from this seller regardless of what their prices are.
Excellent!

Love this series. The acting, writing/stories, cast -- it really is fun to watch and keeps your interest. I enjoy it like I enjoyed the SG-1 series.
Best sci-fi in a long time!

It has been a long time since I saw a good sci-fi show. Atlantis is really smart and entertaining right from the start.
Yeesh.

Well, I *wanted* to like it, really I did. The effects were gorgeous, the premise wonderful... the writing abysmal, and the acting about 50-50. And when I say 50-50, I don't mean average; I mean 50% excellent and 50% forehead-slappingly bad.
If you loved the original series... you can watch this, but don't expect the same high quality, competence or intelligence. The writers are evidently rehashing old sci-fi standard plots, one at a time, without comprehending the basic premise behind the originals. I'm afraid we were yelling at the TV in disgust at one point. Writing characters who wouldn't be able to survive due to being too dumb to live on this world does not make me believe in their ability to make it on another.
It does get better, a little. If you can sit through the worst of it in the beginning they start to manage a couple better episodes towards the end. Now, if we can just some up with a way to assassinate that idiotic commander chick, it might all turn out ok. (I can only blame so much of her character on the writers having no clue of the leadership qualities necessary to run a remote scientific/military outpost. The rest is just bad acting.)
Great replacement

This is a great show as long as Ben Browder stays off of it. It is a great follow up series with Stargate SG-1. A must have for any Sci-fi fan.
Take me to the Pegasus Galaxy!

Clichéd but cool.

Stargate: Atlantis was my first brush with the Stargate franchise - aside from having caught the dismal original movie on air - and I honestly didn't expect much. Being a huge science fiction fan, I expected to have seen most of it done better before. Well, it's all been done before, but never quite like this. The series takes all the clichés and stock plots, and put its own spin on it entirely. It has charm. It knows its own weaknesses and doesn't hesitate to throw a few wry comments into the cam. The characters are marvellously flawed and realistic most of the time, and delightfully witty to boot. The plots are hackneyed and old, but executed to near-perfection, and strung along into a coherent arc.
It's not the most original thing in the world, but it's fresh. If you're not a die-hard SF fan, you most likely won't be converted, but if you're new to the genré and like what you see, this ought to be your first stop, and if you're already fed to bursting and starting to get sick of Star Trek and Doctor Who, then this might just remind you why you loved them in the first place.
Very Good Series

This is the best season of Stargate Atlantis by far.It breaks away from SG-1 and creates a whole new environment and new characters.Although Weir is really annoying.Sorry but i dont think she can act.Ben Browder was meant to be in Joe Flanigan(John Sheppard) place but he was fiming Farscape at the time.He would have been a nice addition but Joe Flanigan actually works well in Atlantis.I still miss the old SG-1.

I'm not going to review the story. Others have done it and done it well. I do like the show even though I'm not familiar with Stargate SG-1.
The special features include a transport chamber (previews, set tour), audio commentaries, and a production design and photo gallery. The audio is in english, spanish, and portuguese. The subtitles are in english, spanish, portuguese, and french. All episodes are subtitled.
The picture is nice and clear. The dvds play fine on my old dvd player.
Fun - Exciting - Adventure

Stargate Atlantis does a great job of contining the legacy that Stargate SG-1 started. New aliens, new galaxies, and new cast make Stargate Atlantis a "must see" for anyone who likes Stargate SG-1 or is simply a sci-fi fan.
