Quite Good
2007-12-06
My main reason for having purchased this was two of the cast members. - Bruce C and Kurt R.
It's a good movie for family. - Would've preferred there to be more of a battle sequence within the city, but it worked out quite well all in all.
Super-Powered Comedy/Adventure
2007-12-05
"Sky High" is one of the most pleasant surprises of recent years, a comedy/adventure that's funny, solid with the action scenes, and thoroughly charming. A superhero movie that fits far more snugly into the comedy genre than most but that, thank Heaven, doesn't sink into a stupid parody, it's a nice change of pace from the more serious superhero films like the X-Men trilogy or "Batman Begins" (which, of course. are also highly recommemded).
Sky High is the hidden high school where the superheroes of tomorrow are trained; the main point-of-view character is Will (Michael Angarano), the son of the world's two greatest superheroes, The Commander and Jetstream (Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston). Coming from such a pedigree, great things are expected from Will - unfortunately, unlike most of the other offspring of established super-people, he has yet to manifest any powers of his own, a secret he's not anxious to divulge. Starting at the prestigious academy the same day as Will is his lifelong friend Layla (classic girl-next-door character here) Williams (Danielle Panabaker), who has a special way with plants. The two are part of a clique that forms in the early going, and the student body quietly dreads the upcoming tryouts that determine who gets assigned to which camp - 'superhero' (the sought-after positions) or 'sidekick' (sort of the consolation prize). Presiding over the tryouts is perennially cranky Coach Boomer (Bruce Campbell in a rare non-horror role), who's loud, macho, and secretly very bitter that he never won acknowledgement as one of the world's great superheroes (was Guy Gardner an influence in creating this character?) Most of the main characters get assigned to sidekick duty, but the clique becomes strained when Will's prodigious superpowers finally manifest themselves and he's welcomed among the A-listers. Add to this a growing plot thread of some kind of secret threat menacing the school, and you're all set up for a great ride of a movie. I agree with the reviewer who said that real-life high school should be this much fun.
The movie has fun with a lot of classic superhero themes without mocking them, and isn't too goofy that the action sequences become pointless. Winning performaces all around, Sky High also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kelly Vitz, Steven Strait, Dee-Jay Daniels, Nicolas Braun and Lynda Carter.
Great fun; recommended for one and all.

Great Fun for the Whole Family

Sky High is a movie about a high school for teens with super-powers. It has the usual teenage situations going on but with super hero and sidekick powers added. It's a great combination. Sky High is a great film that the whole family can sit down together and watch and everyone will really enjoy. It has good actors, good plot, action and lots of fun.
Our whole family really enjoyed the movie. I recommend watching for a light hearted family night of fun.
Half attempt at a family film

There is hope when you first look at the cover that this movie will be good. But the hope dies when the movie starts. Its hokey and predictable. There is no suspense who the villian is. Its basically oo the movie just started and i know the entire plot kind of film. But the actor that plays Warren Peace...gaga gorgeous and hes a good enough actor to keep me watching this movie for his scenes no matter how ridiculus the rest of the movie is...
Good, clean, superhero fun with Teen fantasies too

A good, all-around family film. There is no swearing, nudity, making-out, gross body humor, or sexual innuendo - not even drunken idiot scenes!
Still interested?
The hero is late getting his superpowers, so has to deal with common teen fears of being inadequate as a person, failing his parents, embarrassment over his lack of "talent", and shyness with pretty girls. The issue of trust between child and parents comes up, as does loyalty among friends despite peer pressure.
After all, being a freshman is bad enough, but a child of famous superheroes hanging with Sidekicks, is just unheard of.
The evil genius turns out to be a girl ... a nice twist to the story.
The arch rival is Warren Peace, son of a hero and an arch-villain. You see the humor here. Actually he is a *very* attractive young man, who plays a complex character well. Check out his genuine smile on the extra features of the disc - he is definitely "top model" material.
The story has a good pace, interesting characters, and unlike made-for-adult superheroes like Ultraviolet, the Punisher, and Hellboy, these characters are not about revenge/pain/killing/seducing.
They are what traditional superheroes should be - giving us entertainment with a clear line between Good versus Evil. They show us the virtues we admire ... justice, honor, loyalty, courage, fair play, mercy, super strength, extreme intelligence, etc.
Safe for all ages. Maybe intense for kindergarten or younger. Warren Peace, Royal Pain, and the principal can be scary.
A truly fun movie for kids and adults alike

It is so refreshing to see a movie like Sky High, a movie that is pure fun to watch for the whole family. Solid performances by all the cast, a story that never slows down nor takes itself too seriously, good FX, it has everything you want if you want to have a good time and forget your troubles for a while. Highly enjoyable!
