Editorial Review
The remanufactured SC-HT650 home theater system from Panasonic brings the cinematic experience into your living room without requiring a ton of setup. Outfitted with a home theater receiver/five-disc DVD player combo, four slim satellite speakers, a center channel speaker, and a powered subwoofer, the SC-HT650 puts you in the middle of the action whether you're watching progressive scan DVD movies, listening to your favorite albums in high-resolution DVD-Audio surround sound, or enjoying MP3 and WMA playback on a CD-R/RW disc.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SC-HT650 is ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The result is remarkably crisp movies that look as good as the films in your local multiplex. Further video enhancements include a selectable aspect ratio; a Cinema mode that reduces glare, softens resolution, and improves detail in dark scenes; and 4:4:4 signal processing to improve color reproduction and minimize picture noise.

Though DVDs are clearly the main attraction, the SC-HT650 also plays a host of other audio and video formats, including DVD-Video, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CD, CD-R/RW, DVD-Audio, Video CD, MP3-CD, WMA-CD, and even JPEG image files burned on a CD-R/RW. The DVD-Audio compatibility is particularly pleasing to audiophiles, as the super-high-fidelity (192 kHz/24-bit) discs offer multichannel and stereo sound, incredible storage capacity, and unique bonus materials not available on regular audio CDs.

At the heart of the SC-HT650 is a sophisticated, flexible, easy-to-customize core component for both audio and home theater use. The receiver's Dolby Digital and DTS decoders provide crisp, clear sound, while the Dolby Pro Logic II surround adds richness to movies and music. The receiver also offers several multichannel sound field functions that add advanced A/V effects to your favorite audio and video formats, such as enhancing the dialogue in dramatic movies, enhancing the crowd noises for sporting events, or simulating a live club sound for your favorite music.

The speakers include four bass reflex satellite speakers with 3.12 cone woofers, a single center speaker with a 4-inch cone woofer and 2.38-inch tweeter, and a 200-watt subwoofer with a 6.75-inch cone woofer. The speakers are compact yet robust, with enough power to fill a large living room without taking up excess space.

Additional features include component, S-video, and composite outputs; frame-by-frame and slow motion play; resume play (continues disc from same position it left off); bookmarking; and a host of comprehensive navigation menus. The system's receiver/DVD player measures 16.94 by 4.5 by 14.5 inches (W x H x D), while the satellites check in at 3.47 by 5.31 by 4.59 inches. Other measurements include 8.15 by 4.53 by 5.81 inches for the center speaker and 6.81 by 14.66 by 11.88 inches for the subwoofer. The entire system is backed by a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.
