SUCKS - BEWARE!!! 2008-07-08
It was a great idea so I bought it last February. Got it, set it up, and the filter wouldn't work. In fact, it wouldn't play the movie at all if I tried to filter it - it would only play unfiltered. Called customer service, and they gave me a few things to try. I tried everything they said and nothing worked - but I did get charged on my card a second time.

I called back and they said I have a bad unit and would send a new one. They never did - but while waiting for a new unit they did charge my credit card yet again.

I called again to demand they cancel and they said it was all taken care of - my account was closed. A couple weeks later I was charged again. I called back and they said this time it was closed for real. In the meantime, I'd been using it as a regular DVD player - then a movie got stuck in it, and I had to unscrew and remove the cover to get the disc out.

Then I get an e-mail saying they wanted me to return it, and I would be charged a $69 cancellation fee!!!!!

If you can get a working unit, I'm sure it's great. If not, be prepared to pay for nothing.

Caveat Emptor 2008-03-24
Definitely be wary here. Our family received a ClearPlay unit for Christmas 2007, and had some issues. It was determined that we had a defective unit, and their customer service directed us to return our unit, and they would ship a replacement one. So far, so good.
This is the end of March, many emails and phone calls later, and still no replacement unit. I was told recently that in a recent meeting a decision was made to ship units to retail stores instead of fulfilling obligations to service issues, like mine. Clearly a priority for profits over service.
The idea is good, the service, well, I will keep it clean, just like they promise to do. By the way, I purchased the annual plan, and have yet to use it at all.

Great functionality, sub-par website 2007-12-19
Don't let the 4-star rating fool you; I love ClearPlay. It's been only a few days since I purchased the DVD player at a local Best Buy and I've already generated a list of over 50 movies on Netflix that I had previously skipped due to offensive content. The DVD player quality is high; it comes with all the right digital hookups, has a slim profile, and even features progressive scan. Also, as a general rule, the editing is crisp and effective. Perhaps most impressive, customer service is very responsive - whether it be on the phone, through email, or even via live chat.

With that being said, I have run into a few hiccups in my ClearPlay experience. The filter for Momento missed an f-bomb towards the end, and the buttons on the remote are more laborious than you'd expect. Additionally, the customer service reps are a little more casual than I'd like, and even somewhat unknowledgeable at times. All of these are minor issues, however, when compared to the distinctly lacking website. Although I believe I have worked out its intricacies, it was only through concerted effort and multiple calls to customer service. (Free tip for Mac users: As long as your DVD player is updated, all you need on the USB stick is the .cp2 files. Just erase all of that other stuff for Windows.)

In conclusion, while a website overhaul is in order, ClearPlay is still very much worth the $80 I paid for the DVD player and a year subscription.

FANTASTIC DVD PLAYER! 2007-08-15
This is the best investment I've made in a DVD player. It's easy to operate with excellent quality playback. You can retain or omit what you want - a little or a lot.

I'd stopped going to movies. I'd stopped renting videos because of the in-your-face, gratuitous violence, sexual explicitness, and unnecessary disgusting language even with PG-13 movies. I simply decided not to validate the ongoing degradation of many movies on the market.

Now, I have the option of removing the (mostly) gratuitous ugly content, and have a movie that the whole family can watch together! What a dream!

I'm not even that religious but I refuse to have a Hollywood weirdo dictating what is forced into my families space. TV has become bad enough.

I would highly recommend the ClearPlay DVD player to all.

Outstanding value, very high quality DVD player & it's easy to set up and use! 2006-06-15
We are very pleased with this system. It is simple to use and works perfectly. It's nice to be able to set up the player to filter exactly what we want, yet not cut so much out that it hurts the story line. With 14 settings in the various categories that people may find objectionable, it's very easy to play movies that fit your family. We don't have to worry about ANY objectionable words or scenes now.

It's a wonderful value at this price. The DVD performs very well, even with heavily scratched DVD's that we sometimes find when we rent.

Finally, it's a HUGE relief to view movies that are "right" for our family.

Worth it EVEN WITHOUT THE FILTERING!!! 2006-05-03
I love the ability to filter the movies within copywrite laws unlike some other services like cleanflixs, but this player has a feature I'm suprised they don't advertize. Somehow they managed to make this player work extremely well on heavily scratched disks. I can rent a disk from Hollywood vedio or the like and still play it even though the rental DVD's sometimes are so scratched so badly that they crash the DVD player program on my fairly new computer.

And it's not just that the player doesn't crash, only the worst scratches even are noticible in the playback. The movie I'm watching as I write this crashed my computer DVD player immediately upon getting past the opening credits, but on this player I watched it last night only noticing a few small skips that lost less than a second of playback each, none of this jump me to the next chapter business.

My guess is that since the player is designed to skip segments of vedio and/or audio seamlessly and somewhere in building the device that gave it the ability to jump over scratches with a finesse not found on normal players. Perhaps also this is one of the players designed with multiple reading lasers pointed at the same spot so that a small scratch can be ignored by reading the data from a laser with a different angle.

In any case this is the highest quality DVD player I've ever seen when it comes to ignoring scratches. Makes this player a superb deal even if you don't want the filtering

Great Player but don't forget the filters! 2006-01-16
This player basically automatically fast forwards the movie for you so you can avoid all the bad scenes (eg. sex, violence, gore, etc.) without really noticing it doing anything different. It's like the bad scenes never existed.

It's a great, wonderful, and super technology that I wish I had thought of years ago.

However, if you buy this player, it will come with several DVD "Filters" so that you can watch many movies filtered. BUT, say a new movie comes out like Karate Kid 43 and you don't want to see the bad parts, you will have to buy the filter for that movie from ClearPlay for a little more. That goes for every movie you buy that comes out after the CD was burned for your player. That, or you can buy a whole year from them for about $80.

If you want to avoid this extra fee for at least a year, visit http://www.ClearPlayDVD.com and order the player directly from Clearplay. It might cost a little bit more for the player but you get a years worth of filters for free and you'll be glad you have them when it comes to watch a movie you just bought or rented.
