Wrong Type of iTrip
2008-06-16
The advertisement for this article did not indicate which nano ipod it would work for. Not knowing this, I purchased the iTrip, only to discover it is the wrong type. Our nano looked exactly like the one advertised with the item, so we did not expect this problem
Deception

The product was showed with a pink ipod nano and it does not fit my pink ipod nano. I was displeased with the fact that they said that it would work with my ipod and it did not.
not for second generation nano

This item does not work with second gen Nanos. I don't know why the product description fails to mention this. The one page manual that comes with it does not mention this either. You have to go to the mnfctr website to find this out.
Does not fit, but would be a great product if it did.

It states in the review that it is for the 1G nano, but in the product manual it states it should fit the 2G Nano. It does not. It would be a great product if it did, I think, because I am quite satisfied with Griffin products, and it is a very slim design.
I also think it would have been great at preventing the transmitter from breaking off, which, has been a concern with those that simply insert into the bottom or top of the iPod.
They were really great about returning it, though, so no harm done, I suppose. Loss of shipping costs to return it.

iTrip wirelessly sends your iPod Nano's audio to any FM receiver, setting you free from the tyranny of headphones. iTrip for iPod Nano interfaces using the Nano's own clear, bright screen to display tuning and setup information. This efficient approach makes iTrip for nano the slimmest, lightest and best-looking iPod accessory. Griffin's SmartDisplay technology seamlessly integrates all functions and features with the iPod Nano. One-touch navigation puts all iTrip functions at a single fingertip. The exclusive SmartSense volume control dynamically adjusts the iPod's volume level for optimal audio quality. Also, you can control iTrip's volume level through the iPod's standard click wheel adjustment. iTrip accomplishes all this without adding bulk to the slim, sexy iPod Nano. The Nano slides into iTrip and securely connects via the iPod's dock and headphone connectors. iTrip's patented micro grip material provides a secure grip that never loses its holding properties. iTrip's innovative selectable mono or stereo modes allow the user to adjust for the absolute best possible audio transmission under real-world conditions. iTrip draws its nominal power directly from iPod Nano, requiring no batteries or AC adapters. A built-in USB Mini-B port allows you to charge or synchronize your iPod while iTrip is in use.

Exactly what I was looking for in an FM transmitter:
2007-08-31
I bought this for a two-week, 3,855 mile trip. I drove for 13 hours at a time and I was not disappointed. This is exactly what I was looking for in an FM transmitter: Small and allows charging while the iPod plays.
The transmission is not especially strong, but no FM transmitter could compare to a direct connection (to speakers/amp/stereo). When driving, I select my playlist, slip the gray cloth case (comes with the iTrip Nano) over the transmitter and set it on my dashboard close to the car's antenna (sounds great right there). If I'm in a friend's car, I usually hold it in my hand with one finger touching the antenna-cable in the back, reducing static to a minimum. Setting it somewhere could produce a great sound, or produce a lot of static.
The gray cloth case is a nice bonus, my screen won't become faded over time from sitting in the sun while on my dashboard. I don't bother using the self-adhesive strip, since the cloth case keeps the iPod and iTrip together fairly well.
The iTrip Nano has a Mini USB Type B passthrough, allowing the transfer of songs while it is connected as well as charge the iPod while playing. On longer driving trips, I use a car lighter to USB adapter and a USB to Mini USB cable (the iTrip doesn't come with a cable). Not all USB to Mini USB Type B cables will allow the iPod to be charged; My card reader cable wouldn't charge my iPod, but the cable for my TI-89 would charge just fine.
[I found that it] uses power even when the iPod is off, so remember to disconnect it when you're done.
Loses a star for: using power while off, and the transmission not being perfect. Still, I'm not disappointed since I can play for however long I want and the transmission isn't poor quality.
works well, could use more power

As with all FM modulators, you get interference. But the compact size is great. I noticed it works better in some cars than others, and depends greatly on the placement and proximity to the radio. Do not try to charge it through the USB port while its playing, you will get horrible sound.

I give it a three. It works pretty good most of the time. Occasionally it has trouble getting good reception.
