This high performance desktop battery backup features maximum protection in a versatile design. The fully featured APC Back-UPS RS can be placed on the floor, or on a shelf. Up to six battery backup outlets with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) enable you to work through even the most frequent brownouts and power sags. For printers and other devices that do not store or process information, up to three additional outlets provide surge protection. Both Ethernet 10/100BaseT and telephone dataline surge protection safeguards against surges entering via network connections. The PowerChute Personal Edition software features easy-to-use safe system shutdown with sophisticated power management.

good but wish I could get more VA with same specs 2008-09-10
Worked well, but ended up being a bit too small for my needs.
I originally chose this over the BR900 because the BR900 didnt have trim on overvoltage. Also, I beleive the BR900 is a square wave while this BR500 is an approximate sine (i doubt it is close to sine, but still better than square wave). Truthfully I dont know if square is okay, but
figure the mains are sine so the closer to a sine the better,
even if it only Pos-Zero-Neg-Zero-Pos (vs square of Pos-Neg-Pos).

Would have given it 5 stars, but No Vista ready disk for powerchute.
I had to go to site to download the latest powerchute ...
Vista is here, like it or not, by now everyone should support it out of the box.

In the end I kept this BR500 for my ReadyNAS storage box and went with an additional BR900 for my main system. My Dell XPS410 and 24 inch LCD are pulling 232 watts giving me 18 minutes on the BR900 battery. I want the LCD so i can work through a power interruption. I could get about 9 minutes on the BR500 for the same devices, but I wanted some headroom for a ReadyNAS. All 3 devices gave me less than 5 minutes on the BR500, too short to guarantee a clean shutdown on low battery.

The key feature of these APCs for me is the auto-shut down signal to my PC (or ReadyNAS) on low battery. Keeping both the BR500 and BR900 saves me the added headache of
having to poll a single APC myself to send shutdown to two devices.
Using the out-of-the-box s/w, only one device can receive the low-battery shutdown command.

Mixed feelings 2008-05-21
I ordered two of these from Amazon in April 2008. They arrived separately. Both were manufactured in 2006 and their packing boxes showed considerable wear. They were taped up in a very unfinished manner suggesting that they had been opened in the past. Indeed, one of the units had a yellow warning around it (regarding hooking up the battery) while the other did not. Still, they appeared unused. I ended up returning one of the units because one of the receptacles made intermittent contact causing loss of power and sparking (this was when the plug was pushed all the way in... it had to be wiggled sideways to make better contact). Both units had what I would call unacceptably loose receptacles, especially if the plug being used was two-pronged (ungrounded). So far, however, the unit is working as advertised. I believe this is the least expensive APC UPS with automatic voltage regulation -- a critical feature where I live. I have a comparable Tripp Lite model with automatic voltage regulation. So far, I can't say that one design is better than the other, though APC is supposed to have a better reputation. Right now, my thinking is that I'm more worried about where these APC units have been sitting for the last two years and whether there is something suspect about them. Finally, I should add that for those of you moving to gigabit wired ethernet, most of the models out there right now (including this one) only handle up to 100Base-T ethernet. If you connect gigabit ethernet to the ethernet surge protector, the connection throttles down to 100Base-T. APC sells a separate stand-alone product for gigabit ethernet surge protection (APC PNET1GB).

APC Backk-UPS RS 2007-09-29
Unit worked fine until the first power outage, which apparently damaged the unit. After the power returned and for months thereafter, it produced an annoying beeping sound. Replaced the battery with a new one but the beeping continued. Finally had to replace the UPS with one of another brand. I have 2 good UPS batteries looking for a home.

APC Backup RS 500 VA 2007-09-12
This is a good product but a little light weight. Only will carry the computer about 8 minutes.
