Using on an iMac- nothing but frustration
2008-03-17
This modem gave me nothing but frustration. It connects only for a couple minutes at a time, then it hangs up unexpectedly. I read that it can have some trouble because of magnetism in the computer. But I have tried everything- different usb ports, using a long usb extension cord, etc. Nothing helps.
Another major annoyance for me: I keep the computer asleep whenever it's not in use. But picking up the phone (any phone in the house) wakes up the computer!
I will be returning this to the store- worthless.
I am using an iMac G5 w/built-in iSight.
Edit (update): I returned this modem and bought the 56K V.92 Lite Extended USB Macintosh Hardware Base Modem. Amazon does not seem to carry this, but I got it on
provantage dot c o m
for $45 shipped. Works great- no disconnects and doesnt wake up the imac when I pick up the phone. Using it to type this review!
Fantastic, great with a MacBook

Another reviewer has stated that this modem did not work with their MacBook Pro. I would think that it would as it works fine with my MacBook.
Installation was a snap. Just plug it in and it works. There is no extra drivers that need to be installed.
Another reviewer had mentioned an issue with there being interference with other cables. That is true, there is some of that sometimes, but usually it is not something you have to worry about. You should be aware that it could be a reason you are not connecting though, and move the cable away from other cables, or isolate it a little bit to begin with. I would certainly not let this influence your decision to get a Mac.
An example of where you might have interference would be if a USB cable going to your printer crossed over the modem cable next to the MacBook. If there was interference and you were unable to connect to the internet, just plug the cables into different ports or flip them over.
Worked smoothly right out of the box; very easy to set up

A slick looking but pricy Apple product. Despite numerous negative reviews on the Apple forums, the USB device functioned without a hitch and was far easier to install than on a Windows machine. Good download speed. I was thankful to Apple Forum reviewers for advice to locate the modem well away from magnetic sources (poor shielding perhaps?). Seems slow to start and stop, aggravated by the lack of audible clues of dialup phone connection.
Tops in my hands at least, but others have had less than stellar results.
MacBook external modem

Some of us need to use dial-up internet connections in some situations. This modem is small, light and perfectly easy to use. A very good value for the price.
Inferior Modem
2008-01-07
The Apple USB Modem is an inferior product. It will not reliably connect nor stay connected. You must derate the speed to 28K baud or lower to obtain a workable connection. In contrast, using a PC with an old serial modem on the same phone line provides consistently good connection of 44K baud or better, without connection problems.
Additionally, the original modem delivered by Amazon was electronically defective. Apple did replace it with one that has not caused kernel panics, at least yet.
Plugged it in and works

Purchased to be used with both MBP & iMac for faxing docs direct from computer. Configured quickly with very little effort. No issues.
Only complaint is with Apple -- why couldn't they include this little part on the machines??
easy install, easy setup, slow to negotiate connection, crashed my Mac.

I purchased this item to use with my 15" MacBook Pro while traveling in Brazil. Installation was effortless; MacOS 10.5.2 automatically added it as a network interface. Configuration was similar: Simply enter the username, password, phone number. Initially I had issues with the connection dropping every 5-7 mins, and Aqua would freeze, requiring a hard reboot. Searching on Apple's website (in 5-7 minute blocks) yielded many people complaining of the same problem. I tried a number of solutions, including changing USB ports, unplugging the power, changing phone cables, etc. Some combination of these (I don't recall exactly which, but I think it was "unplug power and use USB port next to the power connector") resolved the issue and I was able to connect for several hours without problem.
Does not work with Intel based MacBook Pros

Review of Apple MAO347Z/A External V.2 Modem: I should have heeded the advice in Sigrid E. Mortensen's review. This modem does not work on an Intel based MacBook Pro. I called Amazon and they said they didn't comment on reviews. I said I was not asking them to comment on a review I was asking them about a matter of fact. The person on the phone stuck to her guns and told me nothing. It would appear that Amazon knows very little about the products it sells. It should have found out the answer to my question. Instead they sent the modem to me and now I have to send it back to them.

OK, modem (Works in Boot Camp, too)

This modem works OK. No speed demon, takes a while to dial. It does work in Windows XP with the modem drivers that Apple provides with your boot camp install. The modem is a Motorola SM56 in Apple packaging. You can use the driver that comes on your Leopard install disk DVD to install this modem on any Windows XP machine, you just have to drill down through the folders to find the right install program (turn off AutoRun, or cancel the Apple Boot Camp installer if you do not want the entire suite of Boot Camp drivers to install)
Great

I'm using it with Leopard, and it worked fine, as advertised. I haven't try sending fax with it yet, will try it soon. But as far as receiving faxes, there were no problem. Very easy to set up. Recommended.
