No problems, process takes a while, read manual before starting

No problems. It does take a long time to back up though. I expected a quicker process, but it took a good 30 minutes. Maybe that's normal, I've never backed up a computer before. Be sure to read the manual too, it's not intuitive to figure out. I do like the spongy frame since we leave it in a drawer when not in use.
Incorrect & misleading information

This item was (and still is) described in a previous review as including Firewire cables. It does NOT have such cables, & Amazon refused to accept it for return, leaving me with a product I cannot use. Customer service is non-existent. I will dispute this charge on my credit card.

A great lightweight portable hard drive. I'm using it on a Macbook and it works without any problems - no errors, no need to install any software, and no need to buy additional cables (usb Y cable, etc).
The cables are short, but I didn't find them to be too short, and the drive is not noisy at all.

I've never had any major problems with this drive. I use it primarily to store music and so I play my libraries directly from the drive on different laptops. I never have delays when streaming music off, but when initially accessing the drive or hopping around inside folders there is always a slight response delay, hence the 3 stars. I've used other portable external drives with less downtime. The size and rubber edging is great- you can toss it around in a large bag without a second thought.

The software is the rub

The LaCie 80GB Rugged All-Terrain External Hard Drive is great for what it does. The set-up was easy, and I had no problems with backing up my data. The software that comes with the HD doesn't quite have enough features for my liking. When you back-up your data, it copies everything you want backed-up, even if it hasn't changed. What would have been nice is a feature that backs-up data that is newly added/changed. If you have a lot of data (photos, mp3s, etc.) each back-up can take a while.
Awful..only worked once.

OK; I had quite a battle with this little thing. I kept getting a power surge error on the USB port this drive was connected to. Even by using another USB port for extra power (as instructed in the documentation), I could not get this to work. I had another software engineer try it on his PC as well. Only 1 time did I ever get my PC to recognize this device and NOT get the power surge warning. Never again did it work. I also tried it on a brand new Dell laptop with no luck. It was truly a bad purchase.

My fiance and I bought this earlier this year with the purchase of our new computer and we're happy with the product. It's easy to use, copies files quickly and offers a safety option to avoid damaging your hard drive/computer when disconnecting. We also enjoy the distinct look of the hard drive, fitted with a shock resistant rubber bumper so you can take it with you, and it's compatible with Vista.

I was never able to download this drive onto my computer. It would not show up on the desktop as instructed. When I asked help, I was told to send it back.
