Great Addition to My Power Tools

I just received the grass edger attachment after four days and free shipping. Kudos, once again to Amazon.com! I had previously bought the Homelite (refurbished) expand-it version and returned it because it was too difficult to use and I found it to be unsafe. The Poulon Pro attachment was easy to assemble; it just snaps on the power head and you lock it by turning the large red knob.
I highly recommend reading the enclosed Instruction Manual BEFORE attempting to use this tool for the first time. Heed all the safety instructions, especially the one about eye protection. Guys, this is a POWER tool with a blade that is very sharp and revolves so fast that it is a blur.
Having said that about the blade, I would have liked the manufacturer to add some orange, red, or white paint to both ends as the military does with aircraft that have propellers or rotors. After the engine is turned off, the blade continues to rotate, and could be quite dangerous if adjustments were attempted.
Adjusting the depth of the blade is quite easy. Simply loosen the blade adjustment knob and move the wheel of the edger to raise or lower the cutting depth. There is a little notch in the middle of the blade adjustment bracket; leave it in that position when you use the edger for the first time to find the correct cutting depth. Remember to turn the power head OFF and wait for the blade to stop turning before adjusting the cutting depth.
There is a short learning curve to using the edger. I had been using a string trimmer to edge and discovered that this edger had to "bite" into the turf before it would adequately trim the grass. The blade is gear driven, and once the proper depth is reached, the power head will rev up when there is no resistance from the dirt. I was able to use the edger forward and backwards to accomplish this.
The wheel became covered with dirt fairly quickly, but this was probably because the sprinklers were on this morning. Perhaps this would not occur if the grass had not been recently watered.
Guys, be aware that this edger takes some time and effort to use properly. It is not a lightweight tool and I would highly recommend using it in your back yard first, before going out to the front to avoid making a total fool of yourself in front of the neighbors.
Overall this is a fine addition to my Poulon Pro power head, and the savings over a stand alone power edger is considerable.

Fantastic to use 2008-04-21
I used to try to use my trimmer to edge, what a waste of time! This product trims the edges now as fast as I can walk fast. The first time you edge is a chore, but once the line is cut you can trim in no time. I couldn't recommend this product more - it's made edging a breeze and my lawn looks fantastic with straight lines. I recommend the poulan trimmer as well, there's a combo price on here for that. But I also understand this is a universal edger.

I really like the attachment, it is much easier than having to drag out another edger and it is a lot easier to use.
Poulan Pro edge attachment for trimmers 2008-07-22
This item works great! I used a corded trimmer that would take me about two hours to complete my front yard. After I bought this product it took me 30 min Wish I bought this first.
PP100E works great.. 2008-07-17
I recently purchased the PP1000E and found it to be everything I wanted. My only minor gripe is the wing nut that allows you to move from deep edging (MAX) to less deep edging (MIN) comes loose too easily.. making the edger dig deeper than you want when it loosens. I have not tried replacing the nut, but I have over tightened it to the point of it not coming loose.. but then it is stuck on MIN. ANyway, for what I need it for, it is great. Attaches and detaches quite easily from my Poulan trimmer without any tools. Worth the $50 some bucks I spent.
Great attachment (if paired with the right power head) 2008-06-09
The Poulan Pro Edger attachment performs admirably when paired with an appropriate power head (plenty of muscle). I'm using the attachment with a power head similar to this one: 16" Aluminum Fixed-Line Feed Head, 29cc 4-cycle Straight Shaft, Split Boom, Accepts attachments.
The only complaint that I have is that the shaft is not long enough. In order to keep the guide wheel on the ground I need to really bend over (I'm 6' tall), which is the reason for the 4 stars. I don't believe that I've seen anyone mention this issue, so maybe it's just me (please let me know if you've seen an extension for sale). Overall, a nice attachment for a great price.

My search for an edger attachment began with the Troy-Bilt unit. I have a Troy-Bilt string trimmer, so I figure why not stay within the same brand? Well, there's a clear reason not to - their edger attachment does not work well at all. Cumbersome to maneuver and hard to control to get a clean edge. Also cuts poorly. Bought it at Lowes, and it went back the same week.
So, the next stop was the Expand-It attachment. I saw it on Amazon for a very nice price, but was not sure that it would be a keeper. So I bought it at HD instead. Very glad I did, since it also was returned the same week. While it cut better than the Troy-Bilt, it was very cumbersome to use and difficult to adjust.
Fortunately, the third time was the charm. Tried the Poulan based on the positive reviews, and am happy to say everyone was right! This works very well, cuts great, easy to adjust, and I had no problems maneuvering it right from the get-go. Solid construction and clear instructions round out the list of pluses. I'm using it on a 2-cycle Troy-Bilt trimmer and have no problems getting through thick grass/dirt.
Finally have nice, clean edges along the sidewalk! Good price from Amazon, and quick shipping (as usual).
Nice attachment 2008-06-01
I needed an edger that would attach to my existing Poulan line trimmer. This item filled the bill nicely and so far it has performed flawlessly.
The only negative that I have experienced is that I needed to make some changes to the way it was assembled to get it to rotate 90 degrees to use it as a brush cutter. It would not turn to the correct position to cut brush on my trimmer without that modification. I will need to undo/redo the modification depending on whether I am edging or cutting brush.
