Editorial Review
Featuring Dynamic MicroDriver technology that delivers a full frequency soundstage originally developed for professional musicians, the E2CN is ideal ideal for enhancing your listening experience with iPod, portable MP3, DVD, and CD players as well as all other audio sources. An included selection of interchangeable sleeves allows for a comfortable, personalized fit. Plus, the E2CN ships with an zippered carring case for easy storage. The E2CN's in ear design works like an earplug to block background noise naturally. This enables you to listen comfortably at lower volumes, even in loud environments. And unlike bulky headphones utilizing active noise cancellation technology, no artifacts are introduced into your listening experience. Sound isolating earphones are also much smaller and don't require batteries. The soft, flexible sleeves in the Fit Kit gently contour the inside of the ear for a comfortable, secure fit so that the earphones don't fall out while you're exercising. The cable spool inside provides a convenient, tangle-free way to store your earphones. Um Shure! 2008-05-13
I'm an audiophile and the SCL2's are good earphone's for work or play. If you're a serious listener, musician or want a wide frequency range for your movies I would look elsewhere.

On a personal note, I ordered the E2C-N (discontinued) and received Shure SCL2's as replacement instead. This disappointed me due to after the order was shipped the seller sent me an 'order shipped' email notifying me that there was a product change, nor could I cancel my order. But I cannot really complain, the seller had great intentions. Who wouldn't want a better product for the same amount of money. =)

PRO's - According to the seller SCL2 are identical to E2C-N. Only thing that has changed was the cable coating and the packaging. The highs and mids are good. These are great sound isolating earphone's. When you have them on you might not hear the phone ring or anyone knocking at your door. SCL2's are good earphones for work and play.

CON's - Both models do not produce much bass. Granted the E2C-N didn't have that much bass to begin with, but the SLC2 has little less bass then it's predecessor. They both have great high and mids and sub-standard lows. If you want a wider (Hz) range you better look elsewhere. I have tried all the earpieces for both models and adjusted the sound files for more bass for my iPod and MAC and they both had performed poorly on the bass range.

NOTE - The SLC2 has a frequency range of 22Hz(Lows) - 17.5kHz(Highs).

As for fit that is a personal preference. They are comfortable to me. I place them in my ear canal and lightly press them in my ear canals for a comfortable and secure fit. I have a few friends that tried to shove (more like cram) these in thier ear canals and after I showed them how to put them in they are satisfied with the comfort and fit.

Sound Isolation is Pretty good 2008-05-11
The sound isolation is pretty good. I am using the earphones on my bus rides from and to work and even with normal sound level the surrounding noise is hardly noticeable. What I dislike is that the ear buds are hard to distinguish. Depending on the available light it can be hard to read the little letter for right and left on the ear buds. The previous pair I had from Shure had the right ear bud in two different colors which made it very easy to figure out which one goes in which ear.

Fantastic after correct setup 2008-05-08
These earbuds are great but you have to set them up correctly. First, they have to be put into your ear canal not just hanging in your ear. Second, you must use the correct size rubber earbud cover. I initially used the smallest sized ear bud cover because it fit in easily but I was a bit frustrated with the weak bass. After switching to the medium earbud cover the bass was absolutely fantastic. I recommend these 100% and they are infinitely better than standard Apple earbuds. I suggest trying the earbuds on first with the small black earbud cover to get used to inserting them into your ear; then use the mediums for incredible sound.

Very Nice 2008-05-03
These are simply amazing. They come with 3 different kinds of sleeves (in 3 different sizes) so you can see which you like best. Right now I'm using one of the hard rubber ones and one of the foam ones since my right ear is strange, and I couldn't get a good seal. But the foam one takes care of that. The sound is great, and the noise cancellation is amazing. I bought a pair of Jbuds about half a year ago, they have since been thrown away due to losing audio in one channel. I bought them thinking they would cancel noise like these do. I've had these for a few months now, and I think they're worth every dollar (they were also on sale for $62 at the time). If you want to get a very nice set of earbuds, and you can spare a few extra dollars, go for these.

They do take a little while to get used to, but basically, you just need to find which size and which sleeves work for your ears.

The cables are nice and thick too, unlike so many earbuds out there. I'm doing my best to take care of them, since they were on the more expensive side. So whenever they're not in my ears, I wrap them up and put them in the case that came with it.

Very good, with some caveats... 2008-07-09
I received these the other day and have a solid 2 days at the gym of using them. So far so good. For 60 bucks, they are definitely worth it. But if I had to pay the list of $100, I would have been disappointed. A couple things to note, the wires are really thick. Which is great for durability and the fact that they don't tangle easily, but they are sort of heavy to run with, and are kind of awkward to stow the extra length while working out. Also there isn't a TON of cord. I wear an armband and am average height, but if I kept my ipod in my pocket and was a little taller, I could see having some issues with cord length.

Because of the sound isolation (which is very good), any movement with the cords can be heard through vibrations in your head, which is sort of annoying. However this can be easily fixed by tightening the cord with the sliding do-hickey below your chin bonnet style. (I wear mine under my bottom lip because I find it less annoying than under the chin even if I do look like a moron).

Not that it really matters, but they aren't the sexiest of earbuds either. They are slightly larger than I would prefer, the v-modas are much cooler looking. I also would have liked an option for a white cord for my white ipod. All in all though, the sound is just short of great (some deeper lows would be nice) and any shortcomings are avoidable or superficial. Good set of buds for the price

Fantastic buy 2008-06-16
These earphones have proven to be nothing but great for my listening experience, my working experience, and my hearing. No longer do I need to crank up the volume on crummy headphones to blast over top of the chaos inside a subway car, nor do I need to choose between music and a screaming baby or earplugs on a jetliner. The answer is simple; earplugs that become earphones. That's what these earphones are. My work productivity has improved due to better focus and a near total lack of minor distraction in an otherwise noisy working environment.

These also stay solidly in place when riding a bicycle or performing gymnastic moves. And best of all, the level of sound quality is so good that I can hear very subtle sounds even beyond the music, such as the occasional glitch in a computer's DAC unit (mainly when there's no actual sound being played).

I might just buy another pair, and I've already bought a pack of replacement foams. Those foams are great but they do get kind of nasty after a few weeks.

Very satisfied 2008-06-14
Includes a variety of ear pieces so you can custom fit to your ears - even mix & match to get just the right "sound seal". Took them on the plane and could easily hear movies I was not able to hear with other phones. Nice carrying case included. Satisfied with the comfort and very satisfied with the performance.

Great value and sound 2008-05-29
These earphones do the trick...the sound is great, and with the foam earplugs on, they keep out most (but not all) of outside sound. I wear these every morning on a commuter train, and they do a great job of delivering solid, deep sound from my iPod and keeping most of the ambient noise out. They are comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and the sound quality is better than other earphones I've had -- and certainly noticeably better than the standard iPod earbuds.

not perfect 2008-05-19
First, these are not "noise cancelling", they are "sound isolating". That just means that the shape of the earphone attempts to block outside noise from getting into your ear along with the music.
I would say they are so-so at this. In an airplane, plenty of jet noise still gets in. Too much I would say. But they are probably better than nothing.

I like the shures because the "over the ear" design helps hold them in place while running or walking.

But the problem I am having with my year and a half old pair is: the insulation over the wires on both left and right sides has cracked at the point where the wire tightly curves around the back of the ear. This quickly frayed the wires and caused the earphone to begin to short out. This is of course unacceptable.

I have taped both sides and this worked for awhile but now one side is shorting out again while I am out on a 5 day trip. When I get home I will attempt to twist the frayed wires back together and retape them.

I don't know how much money one has to spend just to get music into one's ears and keep unwanted noise out. Obviously, way more than the music player itself and more than these shures cost.
