Printer software is a nightmare

The printer and copier functions work fine, but the software that is packaged with the printer has caused a number of serious problems on my computer. The software runs in the background and at times will hog 100% of the CPU and slow the computer to a crawl. It also creates a log file which can hang-up and fill the hard drive which leads to a crash. I disabled the software to protect my computer but this also disables all the printer monitoring features. Many people have complained to HP about these problems on the HP site - there has been no action by HP. Another problem - if the printer is connected to a usb port, it disables ALL other usb devices when it is on. This will be my last HP product.

Installation Software CD Problems

If the product includes PLC5e software the install CD will hang on the Windows XP operating system. An attempt to use the CHAT facility of the HP Support website will result in a reply that "this product is no longer supported". If one digs deeper into the trouble shooting messages for this product one of the messages suggests deleting the file 'hpcdmc32.dll'. This does not solve the installation hang. Another message directs one to use the Windows 'Add Printer' task found in Settings --> Printers and Faxes as an alternative to using the Install CD. This allows the Printer function to be connected to the PC but it leaves out the Scan setup and the HP ToolboxFX software.
HP should be ashamed to provide a "Getting Started Guide" which tells users to use the included CD to install the software. They should also be ashamed to tell users that the CHAT facility no longer supports this product. If any of the HP products need all the support it can get it's this one.

The printer seems to be a very good one and does an excellent job printing: quality and speed. It also is an excellent copier.

We use them at the school and I wanted one at home which allow us to fax thru a attached network computer.. Works just fine with the proper software installed with Vista Ultimate..

I've been using my 3055 for five months, with flawless mechanical performance and print quality. Sheet feeding (even those little avery labels for tab binders) fed the first time and looked great. It's very quite except when the scanner is on (this has been reported elsewhere). It then emits a very high-pitched noise untill the scanner times-out. The printer network configuration worked right out of the box on two XP computers, but then something changed and now only one of the computers can access the scanning functions (all though both can send print jobs). The fax function works, but is very tempermental when used with a Comcast VOIP connection.

HP LaserJet 3055 All-in-One

I was worried from some other reviews that this little machine would be noisy, so I prepared a spot in the office closet for it. No need -- it barely makes a sound when the laser engine starts up, so the unit is sitting right next to the desk on a small filing cabinet. The old LaserJet4MP that it replaced was a slow and noisy energy hog (lights dimming) by comparison. This machine queues up the pages before making any noise at all, then spits the documents out. The copy feeder also works well which was another concern on a small mid-priced all-in-one. Scanner software rocks with my iMac and Powerbook G4 running MacOSX 10.3. I do not have much use for the fax but seems to work fine through my DSL line.

Buyer Beware

Last week,my printer died on me and I had to purchase another printer ASAP. I bought this model down at my local Staples store and tried to install it the next day. Now I am no expert on computers but when I added the software and then tried to use my computer to print (a Dell XP) it crashed. I now have to fix the problems that this crash did to my computer.When I went back to return it, the manager said that they have been having problems with this happening because they think it has something to do with the software. I took the time to write this for anyone out there who is considering buying this model. BE CAREFUL!

Amazon lies! Don't buy.

Amazon advertises Vista certified and even says software is in the box. It's for XP of 2000 only. It will not install on Vista and HP does not have software available. It will only print with Vista, nothing else. This review is really targeted at Amazon. The printer works great for XP users.
