great when the operator and trimmer are on the same page.

This is my third GH1000 and it works great. First one was recalled and, the second the belt broke (b&d replaced the trimmer). Its powerful, and well balanaced and the best part is no bumbing required! Worth the money.
I have had this weed eater for 4 years

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!! PARTS NOT AVAILABLE

i have had this trimmer for 6 mos. and the spool cover cap wore out. (which is quite normal on trimmers) Black and Decker kept telling me that the part ($1.25 retail on their website) was on back order for 2 weeks. Then 1 month, and now (this is 15th of July, 08) they will not be available until Jan. '09!!! Customer service told me nothing they could do, except i could order an entire replacement head, which with shipping & handling would cost almost as much as a new trimmer, which I am going to buy, but it will certainly not be a Black & Decker!
Falls apart!

First the trim guard broke and fell off, then it started spinning into the edger mode and won't stay in the trim position. Pretty crappy. I wasn't even done with the first spool of trim wire before it self destructed.
Powerful for an electric
2008-07-03
Just as Consumer Reports says, this trimmer is as powerful as most consumer gas models, and easy to change into edging mode. Uses 0.80 string, heavier than some models and less likely to break when it strikes a tree or rock. The only negative with this--and with any electric--is that you have to drag the extension cord around, and are limited to the 100 feet from the outlet unless you join two cords, which reduces power somewhat.
Don't buy. Junk

The Black and Decker Grass Hog XP electric string trimmer and edger is a powerful and easy-to-use tool that gives you fast trimming performance in the toughest weeds, grass and overgrowth. The strong 7.2 Amp motor with high-torque transmission design delivers constant power. This trimmer offers a generous 14-inch cutting swath, and the .080-diameter heavy-duty dual-line system provides improved cutting ability with longer tool life. The Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) cuts faster, has less line wear, and uses centrifugal force so no bumping is required. This trimmer/edger has a lightweight design, weighing only 6.9 pounds, so it is easy to maneuver; the motor and transmission are mounted between the gripping areas, distributing the weight of the tool for better control and less fatigue. The featured Groom'N'Edge quickly converts the equipment from a trimmer to an edger and back again with just a push of the button; the head rotates 180 degrees and the flip-down edge guide makes edging along sidewalks, driveways, and flower-beds fast and simple. The handle can be height adjusted for any user and the soft grips provide maximum control and comfort. This product is backed by a 2-year full warranty.

Black & Decker Grass Hog XP 14-Inch 7.2 Amp Electric String Trimmer/Edger #GH1000
The trimmer has plenty of power, but is a little imprecise in it's handling. It takes great care to trim well, but it is as advertised. In is perfect for my small yard and nicely compliments my electric mower and blower.
simply outstanding tool
2008-06-22
The negative reviews here refer to a recalled version of this tool. The problems with the cutting head has been fixed in the version now being sold. And with that fix, this is a truly outstanding piece of equipment and I couldn't recommend it more enthusiatically. It is extremely powerful -- taking out huge areas of tough weeds and vines (including all kinds of thistle, poke and other tough-stemmed weeds) with ease. I wish it had a variable-speed trigger but that's a relatively minor drawback. The trimmer string feeds smoothly and lasts quite a long time -- especially given the tough stuff I am attacking with it. I reload the reel myself -- it's easy and effective if you take your time about it and get the string wound smoothly. I find that 15 feet of string on each section of the reel works perfectly -- just be sure that the pieces are the same length when you start or else one will run out before the other and result in more waste than is necessary. Overall, this has become an indispensible tool for me -- giving me a huge working range with a 100-foot extension cord since I have outlets on each side of the house and in the shed. I always hated gas trimmers -- hard to start, prone to failure, smelly and noisy. This trimmer is a dream compared to that and I give it 5 stars without hesitation.

The Black and Decker Grass Hog is very effective in efficiently mowing down dense grasses and weeds, It is relatively light weight and comfortable to maneuver around obstacles. I like the quick change string spools.

Just got this after reading strong CU review as "Best Buy" - it's a bit heavier than my old 4 amp Toro. I like the balance and feel; the curving shaft helps control the torque. I hope it is just my unfamiliarity that is affecting how it cuts, lines sometimes short. I really like how quiet it is. One poor design aspect if the cord retention knob, a bit too small for thicker cords. Using the edger made a cut 1" away from the curb, more than expected. I hope the host of negative reviews here proves wrong...
