The Sabrent 3.5" enclosure is designed to use for any IDE hard drive - even up to 400GB! The new Cypress Chipset allows you to connect any IDE hard drive externally, while the durable aluminum case effectively dissipates the heat to create instant portable data storage in a case that is extremely compact. Works, but could be much better 2008-07-19
One of the threaded inserts (in one of the two enclosures I bought) wasn't threaded, so I could only put one screw in to hold the front plate to the enclosure. The instructions didn't say that the screw holes to mount the drive were covered by a slide-in extruded plastic strip, so it took me awhile to find how to fasten it in. During the several hours of formatting, the case got really hot--almost too hot to touch; but, this shouldn't be a problem in my application since it won't be powered except when I'm adding files. All in all, a pretty poor design & implementation--but, it was cheap & it does work.

Does what it should 2008-07-17
This hard drive case is super easy to deal with. It comes with all of the necessary hardware - even a little screwdriver to install the hard drive. It was plug-and-play with my computer on Windows XP, didn't need to deal with the CD of drivers they give you.

It worked so well I ordered a second one the day I opened it.

Sabrent USB PATA Hard Drive enclosure works well 2008-07-12
This hard drive enclosure was easy to use and operate even though the instructions were brief. I installed an existing 200 MB PATA hard drive and plugged in the connectors, and inserted the screws to complete assembly. When I plugged the USB into my computer, it was recognized and seemed to give very fast data transfers.

Just what I expected 2008-07-11
For a cheapo drive enclosure, this seemed to work fine. The hardware is clunky and you have to work hard to get the drive situated and the back cover on, but worth the discount. Note, there are two size screws in the bag: one smaller size for holding the hard drive in place via side screws (hidden behind the plastic side panels), and another larger size to secure the backplate. Also I had to futz around with the jumper settings to get it working. I have a couple of Wester Digital IDE drives. When I set the jumper to master I got 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)' when I plugged it in. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the XP drivers (not from the disk, from Windows) a few times with the same result. Switching the jumper to slave cause the XP computer to not recognize it, but then when I switched the jumper to 'CS', XP recognized it as a Western Digital drive (before it said it was a generic USB mass storage device) and it has been working great since.

Cheap, but it works. 2008-07-11
The item was what I expected and after reading the reviews from other buyers, I had no problems. The instructions that come with the unit are alright, but the HD must be set as Single and not Master as instructed. Everything screwed together fine and XP recognized it with no problems. I leave it plugged in and when I turn it on, XP recognizes that something has been plugged into the USB port. I click on the safely remove hardware icon and when it says that it's OK; I turn it off.

Satisfied!! 2008-06-29
This product is everything I required. Setup was approx 7 minutes and it worked perfectly the first time. Beautiful.

Great 2008-06-25
I had an old hard drive and all my new computers are serial ATA. I bought this so I could access the information I had on the drive and have an extra portable drive. Very happy with it.

Good, for the price 2008-06-17
I just bought this item and got it up and running without much problem. It started right up after I set a hard drive to master and plugged everything in. I do have some issues I want to tell other potential buyers about though.

1) The screws provided to keep the back end of the enclosure in place are just barely long enough to do the job, so it's very tricky to get both screws in tight.
2) Also, the case offers no way to secure the hard drive in place, so the drive shifts around when you move it.
3) This is a rather minor, but I don't like how the activity light is in the back instead of the front as most other external hard drives.

I still rate this product four stars because it is much cheaper than competing products. Factoring in the price, I am satisfied with what I got.

Drive doesn't fit, unreliable system. 2008-06-11
The engineer who designed this case did not account for the connectors + cable thickness. My drive would not fit inside and still let the thing close. I dealt with it by using some masking tape around the gap for a while.

Then my computer kept losing the connection. I would get constant errors, and iTunes was having fits. I though my hard drive was bad. But I put it into another enclosure and it worked. Which means this thing was not only mechanically bad, it was electrically bad too.

You get what you pay for.
