Editorial Review
The DVP-NC85H five-disc DVD player offers 720p/1080i upscaling through an HDMI connection (High Definition Multi Media Interface). HDMI allows the transfer of uncompressed digital audio and video signals to other HDMI equipped components, providing an uncompromised picture. It also features Precision Cinema Progressive technology, which delivers accurate and vivid images to the television. Unlike other DVD players that detect image changes at the Scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the Pixel level. This results in images closer to the original source data, because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing Pixel behavior. Precision Drive III mechanism is also included, which helps maximize the performance of DVD collections by reading data even on some physically "warped" discs. Other benefits include a 12bit/108MHz video DAC (digital to analog converter), and 24 bit/192KHz audio, providing high-quality video and audio processing for vivid images and crystal clear sound.

Fair only. 2008-04-16
Ok up converting dvd player. Its attached via HDMI video but i think my xbox 360 does a better job! Also tray sticks. Needs an additional pull 1 time in 5 to come all the way out for loading and unloading. Sony has really fallen off as far as build quality goes.

Sony 5 disk CD/DVD Player 2008-04-13
This unit is a very servicable unit. I installed it and read the instructions which were adequate. It proforms well and seems to emit normal heat. I have it installed in a surround sound environment.

Feed Me! 2008-04-09
Replaced two components with one. It's cool how it doesn't matter wether it's a music CD or a DVD, you just load'em up. If you are watching something and switch to another disk, when you come back it will pick up right where you were. Even to some limit that I haven't found yet, it remembers eve nif you have removed the disk from the player. I like the optical cable for sound. finally my amp has 5.1 sound from my DVDs. Avalanche scenes are more fun, and I like how airplanes can go behind me. Much better than the old stuff I replaced (my ancient Sony stuff just wouldn't die so I had to bite the bullet) The only thing I did was I took a fine point silver "paint pen" and painted the raised numbers on the carousel to make it easier to read the number of the tray the disk was in.

Worked OK until the tray LOCKED 2008-03-29
This was my 4th Sony 5 disk player. If worked fine until I got LOCKED and the tray would not eject. Nothing on the Sony web site or suggested solutions from other sites would unlock the tray. My 10 year old Sony electronics still work fine but everything of theirs I have purchased recently has become worthless within months.

Great Choice - Excellent Value 2008-03-27
PRO's: This product is priced right for such an exceptional product. I have had this five-disk, multi-format DVD player hooked-up and in use for just over a month now and it has performed beautifully, daily! DVD's that had not played or showed digital degradation in other single-disk players in the home had flawless playback regardless of professional or home authoring. The continuous play disk exchange has been especially helpful for movies and music alike and the slow & fast play options (video & audio) have been helpful and fun to use. The installation and setup was straight forward while using the on-screen menus and took less than 15 minutes from box to first disk play (possibly shorter but was having fun with the different settings). The screen saver & auto-shut off features have been ideal for my household, although certain types of DVD menus prevent the unit from turning off under this auto feature. Resume Play has memory for all loaded disks and the Zoom is the clearest I have seen. So far every feature works very well.

CON's: If you are interested in utilizing the shuffle feature for multiple disks, expect an overly long pause between media files - I would suggest burning CD's pre-mixed with desired audio or picture files and playing a single disk rather than wait for the disk exchange lag time. Also, if the disk is not seated well initially, I have noticed some vibration (when near the machine) which disappears once the DVD is played or if the tray is ejected and re-closed.

OVERALL: I am very happy with this player and would recommend it highly to anyone looking for a quality multi-disk DVD player. I do not have a 1080p TV so the fact that the upscaling only goes to 1080i is not a factor for me, and I am not concerned with counting skin pores anyway. This continues to be a great investment and I am glad I trusted Sony to once again provide such exceptional home entertainment equipment.

Great Features, But a Few Things I Don't Like... 2008-05-16
I have had this unit for just about two months now. Video is fine from the DVDs. I am not quite the A/V connoisseur as some reviewers are - I'm significantly less discriminating. But it looks as good to me as any I have seen. I don't generally use it for anything else - just watching DVDs, though it does claim to play a lot of other types of disk. The things that I dislike about this DVD player are as follows:

1) The unit is extremely slow. Powering on, and especially when starting any DVD. It says "loading..." for much longer than any other DVD player I have used. Perhaps this is required in a unit that plays very high quality, but to me it is just annoying. Some DVDs take 30 seconds or more just to load and show anything at all. Too long in my opinion!

2) Another reviewer mentioned how difficult it is to see the numbers of the slots when the tray is open - and that's an understatement! Maybe it is these "old eyes" of mine, but where my entertainment center is there is no direct light shining down, and I can't tell what number is next to the slots in the tray without shining a pocket flashlight on it. No exaggeration - that is the truth! Also each slot number is between two slots and I have mistaken which slot I used on more than one occasion.

3) The remote control is terrible. I mean really bad! Thin and light, I will give it credit for at least having all the necessary buttons in logical places in the remote. (The Panasonic HT-830 I just trashed had the absolute worst layout for a remote I have ever seen. NO Open/close Tray button on top, but instead it was listed in the middle of its 100+ buttons and required a SHIFT press!). The Sony remote for this player for some reason requires that I press every button twice. Changed batteries 3 times and I am only 7 feet away, but it literally takes two presses for each button. Also it is not universal - can't control any other device.

While this is certainly a good player as far as the "neat" features it has - especially being able to swap out DVDs with the tray open WHILE you are watching another DVD - that's a killer feature that I love called Exchange! But the not-so-great remote and the excruciatingly SLOW loading times costs it 2 stars, and give this player a grand total of 3 stars.

For the price, though, it is a good deal.

Great all around player for Audio and Video 2008-04-29
I bought this player for two reasons. If you enjoy music, having to constantly feed a CD tray becomes a little irritating. Don't overlook the convenience of a multi-disk player. Just load it up and it plays for hours. I also wanted a player that would upsample standard DVDs to my 1080p television. This feature works flawlessly. On most movies from 8-10 feet away it is hard to tell the difference from the output of my Sony Blu-Ray player I bought afterwards (I hate to admit this, but it's true). I've had no malfunctions with this player. The only thing that bothers me is the build of the CD tray itself. It seems a little flimsy, but the general build of the player is solid and the case is actually metal. I am very satisfied with this product.

No multi disc shuffle 2008-04-19
I bought this player to replace my old 5 cd carousel changer. For me it was a bonus feature to have DVD playback. Sony's priority is the DVD playback, not CDs. My favorite function on my old component was the "all disc shuffle" function, which was also a button on the component (no TV needed for the display). This one can only shuffle within one disc, but I don't see the point in that. I also don't like where the remote sensor is because I have to leave the door open to my entertainment center to use the remote. This defeats the purpose of a closed door that keeps little hands away from the equipment and media.

Poor quality and poor repair experience 2008-04-18
I bought this as part of a home theater system. I'm not an audiophile and don't watch TV, just a movie or two each week. I like the 5 disc carousel because it allows me to play about a week's worth of Christmas music from MP3s burned to discs. My old CD carousel won't do MP3s.

The remote didn't work out of the box. Many functions are only available on the remote, so this isn't exactly a minor problem. I sent it back immediately.

In return for my brand new DVD player, Sony sent me a "factory refurbished" unit...no other options. Now I first got a "factory refurbished" something back in the 1970s. That one was obviously broken before it was packaged for resale. I have NEVER had a "factory refurbished" unit that worked properly, and this DVD player was no exception.

The used one they sent me worked about as badly as the new one. My ancient Panasonic was working fine, so I just hooked up the Sony to play said MP3s at Christmas. I eventually learned that the Panasonic does not like DVD-Rs very well, so I sent the Sony back for repair a second time. It came in two weeks ago. Absolutely no difference.

I called Sony and they said they would send me a shipping label (it had cost me over $40 so far to ship a unit that is retailing today for $110). A week later I called Sony and the guy said he would e-mail the shipping label "right now." I called back the next day, was put on hold, and then disconnected. When I finally got through, I would not let the guy off the phone until the label hit my e-mail inbox.

I will wait for the unit to be returned (Sony's turnaround is quite good) and see if it works. I won't bother with it any more if it doesn't -- just not worth it. But I will certainly never buy another Sony product.

Oh, by the way: the "universal remote" that came with the home theater system? It's defective, too. Operates the tuner/amp but cannot be programmed to operate anything else.

Nice, But Missing Something 2008-04-17
This is a good product, but being that i am a old school Sony product user the one feature that i really miss on their new dvd/cd players is RANDOM PLAY MODE come on, would it have cost Sony a whole lot of money to include this feature on this latest dvd/cd players 5 dics models instead i had to buy the 300 Mega Storage model to get this feature, but what about those of us who still like the 5 disc carousel model with random play? have we been kicked to the curb.? I mean come on a player without random play is like Popcorn without the butter something is missing badly missing. So if you guys at Sony read this please put this back in your players O'RANDOM PLAY WHERE FORTH ART THOU?
