Excellent Choice 2008-01-25

I purchased the Targus Travel Overnighter Notebook Case for a trip to China. I'm reporting from Nanjing, so I've had only limited experience with the case. Before buying this case I researched the maximum size that airlines and the TSA allowed as carryon luggage. Surprisingly, most of the overnight cases available exceeded that maximum; this one did not. It fits easily in the overhead bin of a 747 and I suspect other moderate and large airliners. However, I received a shock when told it couldn't be carried onto a regional jet and was relieved of the case with my computer inside on the jetway while boarding. Next time I'll be prepared and move the computer to my briefcase before boarding a regional jet.

The case is as advertised. I have a computer with a 15.4" screen and it fits perfectly into the padded sleeve and is very well protected. The case is divided into three compartments, a small front compartment for papers, glasses, cell phones and other odds and ends, a middle compartment for the computer, and a larger back compartment that is separated from the middle compartment by a cloth screen attached by snap buckles. The back compartment is intended for clothes and it holds a reasonable amount. It comfortably held jeans, underwear, socks, 2 tee-shirts, 2 long sleeve shirts, and a thin fleece pullover (all XL). There is an air ticket and passport pocket on the side that is useful and hard to see making it relatively secure. The case itself does not look like a computer case making it less prone to theft. In short, it protects the computer well and is large enough for a reasonable amount of clothes for a day or even two. If I have one complaint, it is that the pockets in the interior of the front compartment don't appear very sturdy. Only time will tell.

The case seems very sturdy. In addition to being rolled around several airports in the US and China it was also rolled about 7 blocks to the train station in Shanghai and 5 blocks to the subway in Nanjing. All that way it had a briefcase hanging off the handle and my overnight bag balanced on top of the case against the handle. Despite one reviewers concern that the handle wasn't sturdy, my experience says otherwise. Although my experience is short, I highly recommend this case.

pretty good case 2007-01-05
Used it once and think this is a great case for one-night trips. It is not for heavy duty use though, so don't put another heavy bag on top of it, it might bent the collapsiable handle a bit too much.

The laptop case inside is perfect, and the front section has useful pockets for misc items.

Recommended.
