While Animamundi Does Have Its Flaws...
2008-04-26
...it's still an amazing game! The voices are wonderful, the artwork is stunningly beautiful & the story lines are full of deliciously angsty shonen-ai (& sometimes yaoi) plots.
First off, as others have said before, be aware that this IS a visual novel. There's no real movement during game play & ALOT of reading. There ARE also some plot holes, but when a game is designed with over 22 different endings (some good and some bad) there's bound to be a few minor mistakes here and there. It's nothing that really detracts from the game.
In addition, many have said they found the game play process difficult and confusing - IT IS; even for a visual novel this game is atypically difficult. However, the complexity is all part of the fun, in my opinion. Still, for those of you who've gone beyond entertained to frustrated beyond belief, there is help! A complete walkthrough is now available via the game's Wikipedia entry. I'd give the full address, but the "Review Guidelines" say that I can't, so do a quick Wiki search and check it out.
Have fun with the game!
DON'T WAIST YOUR MONEY

If there were any way to get refund I would. This is not a game it's a graphic novel. Yes, you can make choices to achieve different ending but mostly you just read and watch changing screen shots. Which is fine if that's your thing but if you want action, adventure, roll playing you will be vary, very, vary disappointed. Also the language of the game is Japanese, I don't speak Japanese and no amount of art or story line can make up for having to spend all that time reading to the point you don't have time to watch the screen shots change. You can control the speed to the text, true enough, but you still can't enjoy an even moderately paced game doing so. Amazon should make it clear that games like this are in foreign languages and that they are not really games at all. I will be more careful of how I choose my games and spend my money with Amazon in the future.
hilarious fun for all the wrong reasons

I love these seiyuu (voice actors); they're the reason we bought the game. I could listen to Midorikawa, Ishida Akira and Koyasu Takehito all night. :-) We bought the game when it was new, before there were many reviews out -- we didn't know at the time that there was an, er, heavy-yaoi track. Fortunately, the game offers options, and you can also play through the game as a heterosexual or as a character who prefers to avoid sado-masochistic encounters.
That said, the game is not built well. There are enormous plot holes left by the choose-your-path storyline, and it wasn't until we explored many different paths that we learned some key plot points. In addition, the plotting and artwork is mediocre -- clearly this is targeted to indiscriminate adolescents with more money than taste, who are more interested in pairing pretty vapid males than in working through a mystery and gothic horror story.
It's great fun for the same reason that Plan 9 From Outer Space is great fun -- throwing popcorn at the screen -- only this does have some fantastic voice talent going for it. Be warned that there is a flaw in the game which is not necessarily fixed by the patch available on the official site; we have not found yet whether or not it's possible to actually complete the adventure, due to the code defect. However, since this is clearly targeted toward an audience unconcerned with plot or resolution, that may not be enough to deter some.
If you like to read this is the game for you

I love reading and I love games so I loved this game. If you are not one to read then just forget you ever saw this game... you be beging for you money back. I love the fact that you can choose you way through the story and do not always get the same chapters in the same order and some you won't see at all unless you do something odd like give your sisters head to some one *cough* which is not recominded just make sure you save befor you do... the art is stunning and being an artist my self I find real appreciation for it. I do recomend this game to anyone who likes to read or like BL I don't recomend it for the ones who likes action and button mashing or you find your self at the end without any clue as to who you go there... by the way if you get the game... do not decline the deval... well just once but again save befor you do or you'll be kicking youself... take your time to read the text, the smallest things can clue you off to what is really going on and what you should do next... Get all the endings (I forgot how many there were) and iteam and a suprize awaits you ^_^
A whole new gaming/manga experience for BL fans.

It's part audio book, part "create-your-own-adventure" book nestolgia, part art, & all multimedia. There are so many possibilities, depending on what you choose you'll be skipping chapters, getting special chapters, & so many different possib;e endings. This game is NOT without it's challenges, there are lots of Bad Endings where someone dies & you have to start ALL over again. Luckily, you also can keep 27 Saves & use the Skip option to rush through chapters faster to catch up where you messed up.
Karin should have used (japanese superior equivelant of Photoshop) to fix all the jaggies on the bitmap dolls before placing them over the stills. The only technical problem in in the chapter "Outbreak of War" where the text support fails to work, but don't worry, the problem eventually fixes itself through your persistance to access it.
BTW, it's not "yaoi" but a "BL" game with a heterosexual option. If it was yaoi, it'd have an R or NC17 label slapped on it & play out like a doujinshi with little thought in the plot.
**SLASHINESS SPOILER**
Trying to get to even one "good end" is giving me anxiety. I'm sure I can pair him with St. Germant, but what about Dashwood? Dashwood seems desperate to get a beautiful boyfriend & flirts openly with Georik & Ruthberg, puts some serious moves on Georik while 2 guys are watching, & cries when he fears for Georik's life. So addorable. Ohohoho! I must say I enjoyed that bit of Bruno coping some serious feel on St. Germant. His seiyuu would make a most excelant uke *_* Dunno why. & is it just me, or does Bruno seem like the love child of Ni Jian-Yi & Kazutaka Muraki?
