A GPS, a paper clip and a map 2007-11-24
We were so happy when we bought our first GPS unit 8 months ago.

But our experience with TomTom GO510 has been a frustrating one.
The unit requires frequent resets, sometimes right in the middle of unfamiliar places.
If we ever forgot to bring a pin, we had to resort to the good old map to get us out of the jam.

To TomTom's credit, it did replace promptly our dead unit after initial 2 months of use.
But the unit consistently failed to find our California home, even after a most recent map update. Granted, the housing development was only about 2 years old. But, we had reported its coordinates to TomTom right after we received the unit.

It was even more ridiculous when the unit reported errors during a recent route computation
from New Jersey to the JFK Airport.

TomTom 510 is not worth the price.

psumom 2007-11-10
I bought the Tom Tom GO 510 for my daughter for her birthday. She was getting married and moving from the east coast to the west coast. We drove cross country with her using the Tom Tom and it was great. Not one missed turn. She uses it all the time to get around her new city. She would be lost without it. We also liked the fact that it was bluetooth ready without having to subscribe to any additional service.

Not the worst investment 2007-10-29
Caveats abound with this mostly okay navigator. First, don't trust that it knows which restaurants and points of interest are still open or closed. Second, in areas with lots of recent road development, don't expect TomTom to be aware that what it thinks is farmland was just recently paved over. Thrid, the voice keeps cutting out on us lately, and if we're not paying attention to the screen, there's no guarantee we'll be warned to take the next exit. We've had to backtrack at least five times based on this machine's faulty instructions. I think it's a much better tool to use when planning ahead of time (while you're on a long stretch of road) as to where you're going next than relying on the step-by-step instructions.

Not a five star product...let's be honest here... 2007-10-20
I bought this after reading a lot of reviews, here and other websites. I wanted an easy to use GPS at a bargain price, I wanted sound, preferably a sexy british female voice, I wanted it to synch with my bluetooth phone too. I thought it was a pretty good bargain, and I did find a lot of features that I like.

But, certain things with this, and other TOMTOM's are flawed. Registering new maps is a major pain...I downloaded the map for italy last night and it took me 4 hours to get it going. During that time, my screen went blank...after a lot of research I learned that this is a common problem and that you can take a pin, find a reset hole on the bottom, and resset it when it happens. Still, should one have to do this for a 5 star device? I don't think so. Back to the registering of maps...like I said, I bought it legally and downloaded it to the 510...no problem. But when I tried to get it started it wanted me to enter a code...when I entered the code given by the website it told me it wasn't the correct code... after more online research I learned that if this happens you have to download another 'clear flash memory' program, run it, and then the password will work...OK, at least they have such a program, but why not give a correct error message, and why should it happen in the first place? I will keep the tomtom because it's not worth the time to trade it for another company's GPS, but buyer beware, this is not a five star item.

Poor quality and directions 2008-04-06
I am greatly disapointed in the quality of the product. The device frequently takes 5+ minutes to locate my position when I turn it on. I shouldn't have to get the device out to the car and turn it on several minutes before I leave so that I can get directions to my next destination. Similarly, the battery life is very poor. After just a few weeks of use, it would routinely last only 5 minutes before giving me warning messages about the power. As a result, I need to travel with the charger at all times and cannot use it without it being plugged in which brings me to the next issue. The device is poorly designed. For some reason they decided that the only way you would ever want to charge it, is with the full base. You cannot plug the charger directly into the tomtom which means you must have the charger with you at all times. I also found that it frequntly asked me whether I wanted to connect to my PC, while I was driving. After a month of aggrevation, I called to complain and eventually received a replacement device. Unfortunately, only the issue about connecting to my PC was resolved which makes me think it is a poor quality system and this doesn't even go into the times when it gives misguided directions (something which I would assume that all devices do from time to time). I would recommend that you stay away from this device and possibily the TomTom brand.

Piece of Junk 2008-01-16
I have had nothing but trouble with this unit. It could not navigate on the olympic peninsula in Washington state. Resets itself too often. Finally, when I really needed it one night, it died. Not a power issue as it was plugged into the car with the charge light on. Tried charging overnight - now it will not reset and not even come on. Returning it for something that works.

Underwhelmed 2008-01-11
I have been disappointed in my TomTom for a number of reasons; so many in fact, that I don't know where to start... Perhaps the Ben and Jerry's in the POI for Mammoth Lakes, CA when we were on vacation that landed us in the middle of an apartment complex (perhaps they have a condo there...?). Similar results for a number of other POI's. Some work, some don't...

The website is difficult to navigate. Support is not easy to get. The connector for the AC adaptor falls out of the dock very easily. The software that connects the device to the computer is not intuitive or easy to navigate. I was allowed to purchase John Cleese as a voice, but wasn't allowed to load it to the device... I could go on (and on).

Save time, energy and frustration 2007-11-25
The unit arrived as promised. I took it out of the box. Read the "quick start" instructions and fired it up. It took about three minutes to fire up and locate itself. My wife and I used it on a trip to a new area with about 20 stops to be made. Except for two streets which were very new the TOM TOM did a perfect job. Smart buy.

Great Product! 2007-11-24
Hi,
At first it was hard to get to understand the software and all, but after getting thru that, I love it. There isn't a place it hasn't taken me straight there everytime.

Love it!
