Great DVD player
2007-04-21
I absolutely love this DVD player because it plays MPEG format and it can read all types of disks (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW.) I transfer all my television programs from my TIVO to my PC and then burn them as MPEG files onto a re-writable DVD. Then means that when I am done watching my shows I can erase the disk and re-record it. I am able to fit between 3 and 5 hours of programing onto each DVD. The picture quality is great and the battery life is also very good. I take the DVD player to the gym with me so I can watch my favorite shows while I run on the treadmill. The size of the player is perfect for this purpose and the small remote control is an added bonus. I'll definately get another if this one ever breaks.

Great perfomance and value for money

Great DVD player. Bought a non-branded machine 1-year previously at Best Buy for $100 that promptly expired as soon as the warranty ended. For almost the same price the Philips DVD is in a different league altogether. Looks sleek and stylish, bright, crisp display, no skipping or jumping, excellent sound, robust and sturdy, long battery life - what else is there? I wouldn't have even paid attention to the noise it makes on starting up if the other pedantic reviewers hadn't pointed in out.
Fine portable DVD; screen awfully small
2007-03-26
Were I to start all over again, I should have seen these little guys in person first. 7" screen is too small, 1/3 of the lifting panel with screen is the speaker, delivering fine sound but taking up valuable real estate. Other than that, picture quality is excellent even in daylight and it works just fine. Huge benefit is 2 headphone ports, keeping peace in the car--if only they agreed on the movie!
Bought this for my 3 year old grand daughter
2007-03-21
This has the clearest picture I have seen on anything in a long time. My grand daughter watches Cinderella III and Swan Lake Barbie on it and they really come to life. The only complaint I have is that when the dvd loads it makes an noise but it doesnt have any other problems and that is probably just part of the whole loading process. It is pretty easy to operate and we keep it in the box it came in while she watches it (just leave the screen open and slide it back into the box, I made a little slit for the cord) that way she cant play with the buttons or put her feet on it. :-) All in all, so far so good and it was a good price.
Great image... but just one little detail

I've purchased the portable DVD/ DivX player for my kids and it hasn't disappointed us!
The only problem that I've found is that if the subtitles for the DivX movie come in a separate file, they are not played at the same time.
This is not a problem if the movie is in your language or if the subtitles are incorporated to the movie file.
perfect for portability and kids

we bought this dvd player for our baby while he was hospitalized. we have had no problems with it. works great. while other reviewers complain about resolution, initial start-up noise, etc, we have no complaints. since the player was purchased with children in mind, these are no issues to us. i personally don't find the start-up noise that loud. the same as any other dvd player starting. my 16yr old (high-tech teen) thinks the resolution is fine. of course it's not HD, but perfect for excellent quality video viewing. we are extremely happy with this player. it is well built. we would buy another in a heartbeat if needed!! buy with confidence that your getting a great player.
Best DVD player for the money
2007-09-04
I did a lot of research before making this purchase. For the money, this is the best! I bought mine on sale for just over $100. It is very sturdy, and nice looking. More importantly, the screen image is sharp and clear. It also has very loud speakers- a feature that many other DVD players in higher price ranges don't. I wanted something with a longer battery life, but to get more than 4 hours, it is very pricey. This one tested out at 3.75 hours. The recharge time is somewhere around 5 hours. I have found that the battery life has been more than I've needed for my toddler on plane trips. I was concerned about the screen size (bigger is better, right?) but really, since my toddler is watching it at less than 3 feet, its great. This is a very user friendly device. Easy to start right away, and easy to plug into a tv to watch videos. This is great when we are staying at hotels. I also bought a pair of califone headphones (about $12), which my toddler LOVES. I would highly recommend these for parents traveling with children.
I have no complaints, I have used this in the car, in the air, and at home. There is a somewhat "loud" whirring upon startup, but really not enough to worry over. I would recommend this to family and friends!
Philips PET724 not working
2007-08-20
It is very sad to see that after just three and four usage of the DVD player. It has stopped working. I have charged the battery but nothing is comming on the screen. It is dead. I have gone through all the manual and nothing is mentioned there also
I have been dupped.
Does What it says on the box

Well priced product with good spec.
No reliability problems, looks good and works well.
I bought the US version whilst on a trip to New York, saving 50% of the UK price and the spec is better than the UK version (which doesnt play DivX althought the Euro one does)
It is easy to make it region free ( do an online search for a crack) and it is switchable PAL / NTSC so I can play any disc on it and also hook it up to most TVs.
Sound is good with headphones and fairly loud from the speakers if a bit tinny.
Very portable, and handy to have in the car when the blackwall tunnel closes and you can't get home.
Portable DVD - Philips PET724 7"
2007-05-16
This is the first portable DVD player I've owned or used. Have enjoyed its use. However, I find that the sound quality isn't great; in particular the volume at its maximum isn't terribly loud. Soft dialogue is sometimes hard to hear. Would recommend ear phones.
