Nice System for the price
2007-06-02
I bought this at BJ's warehouse for $330 (plus tax). Nice sound and decent Bass. I like the USB port, HDMI, digital audio input, and 4 floor standing speakers. The manual wasnt that good. Not a lot of inputs, but you cant expect that much for the price.
**update** As suggested by other reviews, I bought 16 gauge wires...nice difference in the bass. I also ordered a digital optical audio cable...I will update once installed.
Good System for the Price

Sound is very good for the price, especially after replacing the speaker wires with some decent 16 gauge ones. The sound difference is very audible. Instruction manuel is very difficult to follow.Great system overall so far, I am happy with my purchase.
Great buy for the price.

You can't beat the price and free shipping on amazon. I looked...
I really enjoy the sound quality in this system. The subwoofer is fantastic, no distortion with excellent tone at all volume levels. I would wish the speakers were a little beefier, they start to lose sound quality near the 52+ volume range, but that would probably be solved by switching to a 14 guage or better wire, as they only come with 20 guage.
Overall it is an excellent sounding system and my recommendation for anyone looking in the $300-400 range.
Cool sound

We received the unit from Amazon after only a couple of days. When I hooked it up, it worked right off - sounds great!
- I thought that the DVD changer would be slow but it is amazingly quick; I like it better than the carousel kind that I thought I wanted.
- DVD played to HDTV is phenomenal! Clear picture and great sound. We played two non-digital DVDs and then one with Dolby - WOW! and then I discovered that it wasn't even in surround - double WOW when I turned that on. Maybe we're just easy to please.
- lack of outputs is a pain.
- the description of the connectors and how to connect is weak; doesn't even describe how to use the HDMI; doesn't describe how the optical input is used in conjunction with the HDMI (if even needed)
- description of how to set it up is also weak. Like they are afraid to explain anything. Several notes are used to state what it won't do, but it was terribly unclear what they meant.
- doesn't describe how to use the device with other audio and/or video external devices; nor does it say you can't.
Where's bass?

I am very disappointed in the quality of sound reproduction, in general. Although the sound from a DVD is more full, the natural TV sound is lacking in bass and rich tones. I've found that static noise is annoying, and although I've had to rearrange the method of connecting the speakers to the receiver, the static remains.
If I had to do it over again, I would spend the extra money and NOT buy Home Theater in a Box, but separate components.
Stopped working in less that a year

My head unit just crashed for some unknown reason. No power at all. I even replaced the fuse which didn't work. And by the way the ceramic fuse used by JVC can't be found any where. I used a glass fuse. Guess I have to go buy some new system.
I'd give it a zero if I could!!!!

Garbage, junk, turning the receiver/dvd unit into expensive potholder for dining room table. Unit just completely pooped out after only 9 months. JVC wouldn't assist in repairing, but told me they had an authorized dealer that I could take it to around 100 miles from my home (**in another state no less!!!**). Took it to a local Radio Shack who, for a $20 fee, would send it off to have a repair company look at it. Estimate for repairs? $185.00!! No way. Will not ever buy JVC products again.
doesn't perform well on all fronts

I bought this product about a year ago, and was initially very happy with it. Sound reproduction and volume are excellent and it is much too loud for my townhouse complex if I play it at half volume. It handles 5.1 inputs very well, and the range of options for surround sound output (music, stadium, movie etc.) is a nice touch. I don't use it for watching many dvds, but its playback has been adequate when I have tried; I can't speak to the skipping and position loss reported in other reviews. The buying point to me was the fact that it could play content off a USB flash drive. The fact that it can play XVID as well as DIVX (this is an incidental feature not listed in the manual) was a welcome bonus. My one main peeve is that it slows or even stops playback on content that needs high data transfer when using USB; so a panoramic shot of a carnival in a movie will slow playback right down to a standstill. Another irritating flaw is that it will not recognise mixed content on a USB drive. If you have mp3 and avi files on the same device it will only recognise the avi after the mp3s are deleted. Hopefully a firmware update will address these issues in the future.
Garbage

I bought this for my house while deployed in Iraq so my girlfriend could use it. I come home and find out that it has a well known factory defect that simply shuts the machine off when you try to turn it on. The customer service agent told me that I have to pay to get it fixed because I cannot find the receipt. THEY SOLD ME A BROKEN UNIT AND REFUSE TO FIX IT!
Stay away from JVC.
An overall good system

When researching home theater systems I found this JVC one to be the best one for the money. The overall quality is good, and the sytem set up was easy as well. It has been a good addition to our home theater system. The only thing I don't like is that you can connect an MP3 player through the system, except for an IPOD, which is the most popular one out there, and the one I own. It would have been nice to play my Ipod over this, but it's still a great system.
