One of my favorite yoga DVDs (even when not pregnant!)
2008-06-13
The video has multiple practices, which makes it a wonderful value for your money--there is an energizing practice, a relaxing practice, a postpartum practice and then quick practices of meditation for pregnancy, pranayama for pregnancy, and birthing room yoga. I adore the birthing room yoga segment. It is only five minutes long and is perfect to use in birth classes. I bought this video specifically for ideas to use in birth classes--which is fulfilled perfectly with that great little segment--but was pleasantly surprised that I LOVE doing each of the practices as my own morning yoga routine. I'm not pregnant and find the practices really, really good even for not-pregnant people. They have a great balance of some challenge along with restorative, gentleness (they have modifications for people further along in pregnancy). The postpartum practice is really quite a workout, which was a surprise to me. Anyway, I really enjoy this video!
Overall I'm pleased with this

This is my first yoga DVD, and I'm pleased with it very much! It's relaxing to do and helps me sleep better at night. I'm not exactly increasing my spirituality here, but the exercises are good. I have always done pilates but I've hated all the prenatal pilates DVDS I bought. I want to feel like I'm actually toning up my body somehow, not just doing wimpy exercises. This is an easy DVD to follow but I still feel like I'm gettting a good strectch and possibly keeping my muscles toned up, but it's hard to tell how much. So I combine this with other type exercise routines, and use this primarily for relaxation and stretching.
Start Early

This is a great video. Make sure you start this with your partner early in the pregnancy. We recommend within the first trimester if at all possible. It's a great way to spend time together and get ready for the big day. If you wait too long though the mother may not be able to do most of the things. If you start early she will be used to using these muscles and have a great and relaxing time with it.
great for beginner

I really appreciate how well each pose is explained. I have never taken a formal yoga class, and most other videos do not go into describing the positions with as much detail. This video enables you to listen to the tips without having to look at the screen, therefore changing the pose and its effect on your body. The breathing tips were good reminders of tips I had learned in my high-school choir class.
I also liked the segment which reviewed some of the positions which are could be helpful during labor... It's concise and practical.
It may be common sense for an experienced yoga practicer, but it's perfect for one like myself who (at best) walks around the neighborhood and lifts dumbbells on occasion. (In addition to playing with my toddler.) It reminded me of some of the stretches which we did in an aerobics class in college- over 10 years ago.
