Very disappointed 2008-04-26
I purchased this printer believing that I was getting a good deal on a cost-effective, efficient printer. I was disappointed on several fronts. First, the print quality was poor, with smudges that no fix suggested by the trouble shooting materials were able to eliminate. Secondly, all purchasers should be very aware that the printer comes with toner cartridges that only produce 1000 pages. Replacement toner was quite expensive (nearly $300 for a full set), basically erasing any "value" I thought I might be getting on the product. I returned the printer after less than three weeks and dusted off my older black and white laser printer. By the time all of the actual cost of this printer are added up, the buyer would do better to purchase five decent color injet printers.

nice until it breaks, and it will 2008-04-13
Mine broke after 1 year of light use. It started to marble the page and smeared a vertical red line on the left side of the page. Other users reported similar problems.

It's an excellent printer for about a year, after that you can throw it away (which is not that easy btw).

You save money because it is low priced, but it will cost you a lot in the end. The expensive toners are not that much of an issue because it probably doesn't last that long ...

Don't buy if you have a mac. 2008-02-13
This just won't work well with a Mac. It is not directly supported by HP and the open source drivers produce muddy color pictures at best. Go with an HP 2605 or The new Brother wireless color laser printer instead.

Some remarks 2008-01-08
Hi there! These are some of my remarks on the HP Color LJ which I also owe. You can easily fill the cartridges yourself for about $90 (all four of them). Look on eBay. You can also tell the printer how often to calibrate.

Perfect for Color LaserPrints at Home 2007-12-23
I am writing this review, while the HP 1600 is running the second side of our annual holiday letter - in full color of a photo of hummingbirds while peach-picking at Masumoto's Family Farm in California.

The HP prints fast, crisp (offers a draft 600dpi or a full-on 2400dpi) and reliably. No jams and no blurring. This rivals the office laser printers at work, but unfortunately doesn't automatically do double-sided.

Yes, the ink refills are expensive, but it's a color laser printer! I haven't yet had to replace them a second time, so can't judge if the full cartridges are efficient or not.

However, I would like to recommend to HP and all other printer companies, please include FULL cartridges with all your printers. We are springing for the full package here, so let us print away on full (I also hate it when car companies don't give you a full tank to start either).

Happy holidays everyone!

Great Laserjet for the price 2008-06-10
I purchased over 1 year ago, and have had zero problems with this printer.
Works as advertised. Solid build quality, very respectable print speed, and color is above average.
My only issue is that I wish I had researched the cost of the toner cartridges for this unit. They are very expensive, and the lifespan is a bit shorter than I was expecting. Hence the reason for only 4 stars. I think an inexpensive laserjet should also have somewhat inexpensive toner cartridges. To that end, I am considering an HP Pixma to supplement this printer for LARGE color jobs.
The printer was easily shared on my home network which consists of 3 XP, and 4 Vista computers. This printer is connected to a desktop Vista computer, and all others on the network detected it with no problems.
Typically solid HP drivers and reliability after 14 months or so of regular use.

Highly recommended.

Cannot network connect it . 2008-05-21
This is a very strange result. If one uses a Linksys psus4 printer server the OS (Vista) recognizes the device and echos a network name for it; but when you try to install it as a printer the OS echos that it canot find it. What a failure! Do NOT buy this printer. ALSO HP and Linksys are at a loss as to how to fix this.

Gripe#2 If you do not set the printer drive for grayscale, the counters on the toner cartridges will decriment. That means that the printer will error out and require you to take the existing cartridges out and replace them even if they are still full of toner(ink). What a waste and expense. There is no way that I know of to get these cartridges' chips to reset to a reasonable value.

Ships with half-full ink tanks, buy the 2600n instead 2008-05-15
At the time that I shopped for the 1600, I discovered that it came with 4 half-full toner cartridges, and the 2600n, which has an Ethernet port, came with full tanks. This made it worthwhile to buy the 2600n instead.

Died, HP refuses to support 2008-05-08
Printer worked quite well for a while, print quality and speeds were what we expected. Then the printer began giving error messages indicative of an internal hardware error.

I called HP thinking (stupidly) that they would stand behind the quality of their products. they asked for some numbers inside the printer, then told me that it was out of warranty, and I would have to pay $40 to get technical support. I find it funny that they never bothered to ask when I bough t the printer before stonewalling me with a claim that it was out of warranty.

So now I have a paperweight, because I refuse to spend$40 just to find out what replacement part I need to order to fix HP's garbage. This printer lasted half as long as my Epson inkjet.

DO NOT BUY - The company that makes this product refuses to stand behind it.

Not for Scrapbookers! 2008-05-07
The printer has nice colors and prints beautifully if it's on regular paper. However, if you scrapbook and need to print on cardstock, do NOT buy! As a previous reviewer stated it starts to get messy after one copy. I returned mine. Also, it is quite a beast (tall and with a large footprint), so make sure you've got a large space for it to live. I would recommend this printer if you want bright, clear colors on basic paper only (especially if it's on sale for $180 at a local office supply store), which is where I bought and returned mine...
