Doesn't work with Windows XP SP2 on Dell desktop
2007-12-25
I bought this because it was given a good rating by Consumer Reports and the price was better than the competitors. I have windows XP SP2, on a 2003 Dell Dimension. Windows XP was running very well on the machine, with 768MB RAM. Since I installed the Kaspersky program my PC has crashed repeatedly, especially when running Windows Explorer. Kaspersky 6.0 causes Explorer to lock up almost every other time it is opened (broadband internet connection); the only way to solve that problem is with a hard reboot, which is extremely annoying. Periodically, I get a complete system crash, which has been recoverable by allowing Windows XP to run CHKDSK and fixing the corrupted file indexes. I even tried taking off Explorer 7.0 - no dice; and then as a desparate measure, reformatting my hard drive and completely reinstalling the DEll OEM versioin of Windows XP, with SP2 and all of the critical Microsoft updates. I also reinstalled Kaspersky 6.0 using the default settings. It made little difference - system still locks up. I'm looking for a more reliable antivirus product - you get what you pay for.
Easy

I bought this as a replacement for my expired and intrusive Norton Internet Security software. I've been pretty happy with it. It was easy to install, and it's pretty intuitive to use. It's easy to tweak to the level and type of protection you desire. It's not very intrusive, and hasn't seemed to affect the performance of my laptop very much.
I Got a Virus

I KNOW KAV saved my computer from a dealy virus!!
I had Nortron on my desk top PC and Laptop, but on my Laptop the Nortron had expired. The Reason I picked Kav over Nortron was because of all the positive post about KAV not load downing the system is SOO TRUE!! When ever I'd reset my PC (rebooted it) the 1st screen that would popped up would be Nortron and it would hang on that screen forever!! I use to walk away and come back 15 minutes later to see if my desk top screen was finally up & running.
I reset my PC now with KAV, and it goes right to my desk top screen & is up and working in seconds. There is no big KAV screen right in front of you like Nortron!! And my system has been faster since Nortron has been gone.
Now as for KAV fighting virus----My laptop had KAV but my PC still had Nortron I was waiting for it to exprire before putting KAV on. My husband open an email on the PC & he said Nortron did pop up saying "illegal script do you want to stop" and he hit 'stop script'. But then all these pop up adds started coming up on the screen, even though pop blocker was on!! I check all our secruity were on High, pop up blocker was on, still the pop ups would not stop, so I tried rebooting it & the system crashed!!! Came up to a completely black screen it won't do anything!! No matter how many time we turn it off/on a black screen. Even though we hit stop the script on Nortron it still was able to load something onto our computer and crashed it.
I then got on the lap top to delete the email so it won't crash the latop too and KAV already had it block saying virus detected and ask me if I wanted to delete the email and said YES and our lap top was FINE!!!! I'll never buy nortron AGAIN!!!
Kaspersky 7.0
2007-10-09
I have been uneasy to update Norton antivirus through the internet as I had originally installed the 2005 version and last year upgraded through the internet. Upon doing several searches and reviews, I was impressed with what I was reading about Kaspersky 6.0/7.0. I decided to trial the 30 day free trial of Kaspersky 7.0 tonight and as suggested, I removed my Norton antivirus protection before installing Kaspersky. I am already totally impressed with the speed of opening up internet and email. I will definitely buy the software at the end of my 30-day free trial barring no problems within. (Keep in mind---no problems with installation and the speed has greatly increased over Norton).
Thought it would be better

After several attempts at installing and performing full scans window is occasionally sluggish. Have experienced new compatibility issues with other programs only after installing this product that worked fine with AVG Free. No viruses nor spyware found from scans, but overall performance is not optimal. Running WinXPSP2 on Dell Dimension 8250, hope that helps.
Excelent product. Not intrusive. Doesn't eat resources

Great product.
Does not use much resources.
Quietly scans everything and asks what you want to do with a particular infection. Very user friendly and effective.
Most viruses usually disable NAV as the first thing. This things cleans and kills the very viruses that NAV is killed by.
Great product, great price and free upgrade to newer version

I bought this anti-virus s/w, as it had a rebate and was highly rated. What I did not know but really liked was as soon as I bought it, the next version (7.0) was introduced and I could upgrade to that version for free. This was not just a virus data file update, but a full upgrade to version 7.0, just as if I bought that version.
Pros: Product works great and keep viruses from invading
Cons: It has a proactive mode, that questions when registry changes and other changes to files are about to be made. Presumably a virus might try to do this, but there are a lot of times when these changes are legitimate - like when you upgrade s/w, install a plug-in, etc. Sometimes it is hard ot tell if the changes it is warning you about are legit or not.
Best Anti-Virus I've Used
2008-03-15
I've tried: Norton, AVG, V-Com, and McAfee, and they all have drawbacks...
ie: missed potentially bad files caught by second tier protection, or large/infrequent updates. Kaspersky suffers none of this, and will be my A/V of choice for until something better comes along.
better than norton anti-virus

This seems to be a much better product than norton antivirus, which I used to use. Norton slowed my system down to a crawl. This is barely noticeable. Shipped faster than I expected too.
Ouch

This program was like a trip to the dentist for a root canal, only not as much fun. There were only two bright spots: 1) it de-installed easily, and 2) it taught me that there are worse things than viruses. If you like pain, this one's for you.
