Not happy 2007-11-05
I did not buy this product through Amazon but wanted to share my experience for your consideration. I only had this player for a few months before it started making an annoying noise while playing. I have had no troubles in any other respect and was pleased with it (except the power button is in the worst location and I have inadvertently bumped it off numerous times), but the noise is loud enough and substantially annoying so that I will have to buy a replacement. The noise is best described as "wobbly, vibrating", like the spinning device is uneven. When a dvd is not playing/spinning, the noise stops.

Codefree DVD Plaayer 2007-10-22
An affordable code-free DVD-player, - that's what we wanted! There were German DVDs we wanted to watch, and then Viggo Mortensen's Alatriste was not released in the US, and the Spanish DVD again did not play on a regular American DVD player! Turns out that ALL our DVDs play beautifully on this new player: We love the picture's clarity. All of us love how easy it is to use, - even our 9-year old! The player is very thin and fits anywhere. Overall, a great step up from what we had for an affordable price!

THIS UNIT ALSO PLAYS CD+G KARAOKE DISCS 2007-10-17
This DVP3040 is a great player for the money. It seems to hold up well. I am a mobile DJ and keep one for a CD+G karaoke backup player. Its small and easy to pack away in a padded laptop pouch. I have tried 4 different brands of CD+G discs and they all play great. It does show the track and time on the top corners of the screen while a CD+G disc is playing and you cant remove them from the screen. This is a small drawback to having a great compact backup player for my karaoke shows. This is a nice unit but you must have a remote with it.

*****The new model DVP3140 does NOT play CD+G discs. I bought one and tried it.******

Works well, minimal features 2007-10-11
I've been very happy with this DVD player, it's easy to hook up and works well. The only thing is that it has almost no buttons on the player itself, so if you don't have the remote control handy, there's almost nothing you can do except put the movie in and play it--can't change languages, find a chapter, etc.

Philips Dvp3040 Multi region DVD player 2007-10-10
Up to now (2 1/2 months) the player is working fine, the only inconvenient is that you can not open or close the DVD tray using the hand control. For the price it was a great buy.

Can't play a complete DVD 2008-03-24
Things started out fine but within a year it got bad fast - it can't play an entire DVD without sputtering, skipping, or crawling to a complete halt. Going to throw it in the trash.

DON'T BUY THIS DVD PLAYER! 2007-12-10
At first my only problem with this dvd player was that it is loud. I put up with it b.c it was a cheap dvd player. I thought it was great b.c it was suppose to play all types of DVDs. After owning the player for about 6 months I can't watch a full dvd. This player skips all dvds: NEW, OLD, COPIED, DIVX.. I tried the firmware update and it still didn't help. Pass on this dvd player! You can get a no-name dvd player for the same amount of $ or less and it will out last this player ten fold.

From Bad to Worse 2007-12-06
I bought this machine about 9 months ago and one of the first DVDs I watched on it skipped regularly so that I couldn't get through it. I blamed it on the quality of the DVD and managed to watch a few others successfully. Then after a few weeks I began having more troubles with different DVDs. It has gotten to the point where I consider myself lucky if I make it half way through a movie with out it skipping or stalling. Most times I can't even get the DVD to load. Then I turn on my laptop and watch the movie from there straight through with out any problems. I don't expect at low price DVD to have all the bells and whistles, but I do expect it to at least play a DVD.

Cheap, no frills, does the job 2007-11-21
I've had this DVD player for a couple of months now and I'm very pleased with it. It plays my zone 2 DVD's perfectly and reads even the ones that my friend's more expensive one has trouble with. The image quality is not extraordinary and if I accidentally leave it on for a couple of days, the image turns greenish (i know, weird...). When I re-start it, it's fine again.

If you're looking for something cheap and you're not too picky about image quality, I definitely recommend it.

Cheap DVD player..for a reason. 2007-11-07
I bought this DVD player over a year ago and it stopped working weeks after i got it. Every time i put in a brand new DVD, it would play for a little while and then pause and spin the disc for several minutes, sometimes the movie would start back up and other times..no such luck. Now after months of being deployed, i came back home hoping the player would work. Now it doesn't even recognize DVDs are in the slot. So i just ended up buying a new DVD player to replace this piece of ....
