Very Good CD - Not Perfect though

I first was introduced to Cohen a few years ago and loved his music. Later when I saw "I'm Your Man" on Sundance I was completely enraptured by many of the performances on it. I was happy to see a CD was made of the songs.
I will say my favorite is probably the amazing cover of Anthem by Perla Betalla and Julie Christensen, though this is very closely followed by Rufus' Chelsea Hotel #2 and Teddy Thompson's Tonight Will be Fine. Another in the top list would be Antony's If it be your will.
Not quite as good but definitely worth it are Nick Cave doing Suzanne and then Sisters of Mercy by Beth Orton.
The other songs are not quite as memorable imo, but still great songs.
I was sorely dissapointed that both the Handsome Family's version of A Thousand Kisses Deep was missing as was the Wainright version of Hallelujah (One of the greatest covers of Hallelujah ever).
I can see why alot of people may not have liked this CD though if your a very old and hardcore Cohen fan. No one really sounds like Cohen and if you like that deep base voice then there is no one that will really touch Cohen for singing his songs. Personally, I think Cohen is a much better writer than singer and I prefer to hear other people sing most of his songs (with some exceptions, I think he sings Tower of Song, Suzanne, and A Thousand Kisses Deep well).
That being said, Cohen's writing is amazing. He truly is one of the most gifted poets/songwriters still alive.
Old fan with renewed interest 2008-07-04
I bought this CD soundtrack after seeing the video on television. It contains more songs than the video, including "Tower of Song" done my Martha Wainright. I've been a Leonard Cohen fan since the 60s, but lost interest in him when his career seemed to wander and eventually he seemed to disappear. But the video renewed my interest. The video was excellent, and I think the CD soundtrack is really a good selection of his songs as well. It introduced me to Rufus and Martha Wainright and the McGarrigles, singers that had previously escaped my intention. It also introduced me to Beth Orton, who sings "Sisters of Mercy" on the video and CD. So my comment is that it renewed my interest in Leonard Cohen and now I have names of artists I'd never heard of before to follow.
What a shame!

Every rendition on this CD except the last one is horrible. It is a huge mistake on anyone's part to attempt to give new interpretations to these songs, because without Cohen's deep voice and boundless spirituality, these songs would be just words+melodies instead of poetry. Rufus Wainwright's voice is particularly disturbing.

I couldn't get enough of this. The singer, Antony, singing, "If It Be Your Will," stopped me in my tracks. I haven't gotten his voice and this song out of my head for three weeks. This is a beautiful collection of Cohen's songs, done beautifully.
absent 1,000 kisses? 2007-10-03
How could they omit this song, which was the only one on the DVD that i thought was a must have?
And you really want Leonard. So I say get the DVD for both of those. Overall, the covers are so un-magical (except 1,000 kisses, which was as special as when Alicia Keys covered "Wild Horses" with Adam Levine).
Great tribute! 2007-10-02
This soundtrack features powerful performances of Cohen masterpieces by an outstanding array of today's top singer-songwriters. The tracks on the CD were recorded live at Hal Willner's "Came So Far For Beauty: An Evening of Leonard Cohen Songs", at the Brighton Dome as part of the Brighton Festival 2004 and at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Sydney Festival 2005, except "Tower of Song"featuring Leonard Cohen and U2.
FABULOUS!!! 2007-10-01
This is an exquisite tribute to a poet and song-writing genius. Love all the artists, especially the Wainrights, Antony and that phenomenal rendition of "Anthem" by Perla and Livingston.
Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man Original Soundtrack 2007-09-22
The soundtrack is an invaluable companion to the DVD of the same name. Now you can have Mr. Cohen's fabulous songs, performed by the same talented musicians as the DVD, to keep you company anywhere you are. The words are from deep down and amazingly meaningful. Some are funny, and some are heart wrenching. All are glorious.
Golly Gosh, what a buzz 2007-09-19
Like many others before me, I saw the "I'm your Man" video on a long haul flight and fell in love again with the music of a genius sung by fabulous feisty performers. Now the CD gets a regular repeat play
Disappointing

It is difficult to separate the CD from the DVD, as the DVD was simply horrific to watch - too many artists utterly dependent upon the words, destroying their own performances and messing up what should have been a brilliant project. Sadly, the one track that is so tremendously good on the DVD and so obviously missing on the CD is Rufus Wainwright's rendition of Hallelujah. This could easily have replaced the out-of-place and all together uninspiring Tower of Song by U2. Teddy Thompson's version of Tonight Will Be Fine is spinetingling and possibly worth the purchase alone. Anthony and Rufus Wainwright are equally good.
