Much too expensive, warranty sub-par
2008-08-09
You can find comparable 13 watt CF bulbs at Home Depot for $4.88 / 4 pack. The Home Depot bulbs have a longer warranty.
I bought both these bulbs and the Home Depot bulbs and can not tell a bit of difference in color, ramp-up time, etc.
Save your money -- which you are probably aiming to do by shopping for items like this anyway.
Okay for the price, some annoying downsides

Purchased the 4-pack for my 4-light bathroom vanity fixture. The compact design is a nice fit for any light as some of the full-sized CFLs can be too large (CFLs are generally bigger than incandescent bulbs). I've had problems fitting CFLs into some light fixtures, but these are actually a little smaller than normal incandescent bulbs.
My biggest complaint is that the lights take about half a second to turn on after I flip the light switch. It was annoying at first, and it took some getting used to. Also, the lights take an additional 30 seconds to reach full brightness.
I have other CFLs in the house made by GE, and they do not suffer these problems: they turn on right away and are at full brightness immediately. They are pricier than these Globe CFLs, but I think it's worth it. I would highly recommend the GE brand CFLs and I probably won't be buying from Globe again.
not a good first experience

This was my first experience with compact fluorescent bulbs. I ordered a four pack of the 23 watt bulbs and a four pack of the 13 watt bulbs. The 23 watt bulbs arrived first. They were thrown in a box with very little packaging. One of the bulbs had broken. This was a bit disturbing since they contain mercury. After doing some research, I learned that if you break a fluorescent bulb, the mercury is only hazardous within the first 15 minutes or so. This is because it is in a gas form and will soon disperse into the environment. So if you break one, walk away and try to ventilate the room it was broken in. Anyhow, I sent the bulbs back (including the broken one). This was very easy and I received new bulbs about two days later that were in their original packaging. Thank you Amazon for making this so easy. I also received a confirmation email indicating that they received the damaged bulbs. When I got the bulbs home, I found that they were slightly too thick to fit into one of my floor lamps. I consisder this a learning experience and I don't blame Globe for this. I put a bulb in my other floor lamp and it burned out in about 15-30 minutes. The second one lasted about two days. The third and fourth ones are still going after a couple of weeks. I would not order from Globe again.
Harsh spectrum, slow initial illumination.

These feel like the previous generation of CF lights.
They take more than a second to turn on, and they flicker as they illuminate. They have a very wide spectrum output, but low lumen levels. The light creates very crisp shadows and a very artificial feeling light--not unlike older style florescent bulbs.
Nice, if you want the hospital/flourescent look for your house.

I use these in my basement for the laundry room and don't find the light they produce to be very natural. Personally I find "soft white" (2700K) version to be more natural and more easy on my eyes. The ambience of these bulbs is very cold similar to a hospital or government building.
If your looking for a light bulb similar to incandescent light bulbs found in most homes, buy the "soft white" version of these. I also purchased those, and I prefer them for my main rooms.
If you're looking for a cool white light like flourescent tubes, buy these.
Amazing light.!!

These bulbs are so awesome.. That I ordered 8 more and replaced all the yellow bulbs in my house.. There are actually bright white bulbs and not those pale white or yellowish..
I would definitely recommend it to all the students who need bright white light for studying. Saves electricity and great amt of lighting..
Great color temperature

I bought 3 packs of these to fill the recessed lighting recepticles in my studio apartment. I thought it might be too much light (9 in the main space), but the 60W equivalent was not too bright.
The color temperature of these is perfect for me. I really hate the orangish glow of Soft White bulbs, and found the 6500K Daylight bulbs I had prior to be too cool and harsh at night. These Cool Whites are perfect!
The startup time is pretty much instant - I would say less than a second.
Would highly recommend. Also, the price was great at Amazon! They averaged about $3/bulb, which was the best I could find anywhere (online or in the stores) for Cool Whites.
GREAT but 25% were BROKEN

I am VERY satisfied with the bulbs I've installed - they're very bright and very compact, and they will fit anywhere an incandescent bulb would fit. They're FAR brighter than the 11 Watt "straight" bulbs I just got at IKEA. These give a very white light.
BUT... One out of four bulbs in BOTH packages I got were broken - DOA. So, as much as I'd like to give a five star rating; I have to give two. I love Amazon, and I buy a ton of stuff here, but light bulbs are one thing you should really buy from a local vendor and transport home in your own car.
Here's my take..

Just received these yesterday and immediately took out my 4 60watt fan bulbs and replaced with these. The brightness is outstanding. My living room was flooded with light to the point that I replaced 2 off the 60 watt bulbs to calm it down. So they are brighter than I expected. The only downside I can say is that the light produced is bright white, not a soft white or any tone like that. It kind of makes you feel very 'instutionalized'. I wish they could put a warm glow on these bulbs but maybe that is a technical challenge and that's why I give 4 instead of 5 stars.
Great Light - Great Price

I originalyl bought some of these at a local store for $10 per 2 pack. I then bought 2 4-packs on Amazon for $6.96 each. I was hoping to purchase more today but looks like they raised the price so I will wait and see. The light bulbs work fine, with great light. I replaced another brand using Globe because the other brand wasn't very bright. Mine were shipped fine with packing material, so all 8 of them worked right out of the box. If you have been thinking of switching to an energy saving bulb, I suggest trying these Globe first because they are the best bang for the buck in my opinion.
