Netgear HDX101 with Linux
2008-07-19
I have used this product in my home network with both Windows XP and Linx. This powerline ethernet adapter is plug and play, regadless of the operating system. And, it is very fast. I am currently running three Linux Ubuntu systems on three different floors of my house using one adapter for each computer and one at the firewall. Operation is flawless for more than a year. Can't say enough good about this product. This system replaced my wireless ethernet system which was much slower.
It simply works extremeley slow
2008-07-15
I wasted my money and the device is sitting on my shelf.
The powerline does not work in my ACER new model loaded with windos vista. I had a service call fromm ATT and they could not do nothing either.
It works when I connect it to DirecTV for "on demand" downloading movies, but it is so slow that it took two days to download a movie. So at least my experience is that I totally wasted my money.
Excellent alternative to wireless networks . . .
2008-03-25
This NetGear HDX101 Powerline adapter is an excellent alternative to using a wireless network because it requires no configuration. Moreover, you will never get a dropped signal because it uses your homes electrical wiring. Another caveat is it doesn't interfere with your wireless phones like wirless networks do. You simply plug one adapter into an electrical outlet near your router or hub (internet connection). Next you connect this adapter directly to your router or hub with an ethernet cable. Lastly, you connect another adapter to any electrical outlet in your home where you have additional computers; and you plug that adapter to your other computer by an ethernet cable. Do this last step for each additional computer in your home and you are done! Make sure you get the HDX101 Powerline Adapter (up to 200 MB) anything less gives poor performance. I purchased the lower end model (I believe it was 86 MB) and had to return it to the store because web sites froze when I opened more than one web page. The adapters come with auto-encryption of data; this feature is particularly important if you live in an apartment building or if you are a student in a dorm. You don't have to worry about any one eaves dropping or stealing your information. When purchasing for the first time make sure you buy the HDX101B (a set of 2 Adapters) because you need at least 2 adapters to set up a network. You can purchase additional adapters as needed. God bless you in all your endeavors!
Straightforward with one drawback
2008-03-22
product worked as specified right out of the box. Only drawback, but clearly identified, is the product will not work through a surge strip. I don't like not being protected but it works fine plugged directly into the wall.
Best Purchase Ever?
2008-02-26
This product does exactly what it is represented to do. Wireless does not make it more than a room away in my rebar-filled 1950's-era home, and it would have cost me (conservative estimate) ten times as much to have electricians wire my whole home. I have never been more satisfied. The installation is a breeze. The one potential hitch to watch out for is changing the default security feature and adding a third or fourth box afterward. It's a little tricky, but still quite easily done if you think it through.
Fantastic Plug and Play Functionality - but not cheap!

NETGEAR's Powerline HD Ethernet Adapter (HDX101) with high quality video and gaming, is an ideal solution for connecting a PC, DVR, X-Box 360, PS3, or other game console to the home network. Simply plug one HDX101 into an AC outlet near your router and the other HDX101 near the device you wish to network. Built-in Quality of Service (QoS) ensures a high-quality, consistent performance for things like real-time HD video and audio streaming for a digital media adapter (DMA) like the NETGEAR Digital Entertainer (EVA700), or for Internet gaming, and VoIP calls. With data rates up to 200 Mbps, large file transfers to networked storage devices like NETGEAR's Storage Central (SC101) can be up to 12 times faster than previous powerline networking products, all with encrypted security. Up to 200 Mbps data rates for faster file transfers Predictable and dependable network speeds Configurable QoS for advanced-users Powerline friendly?coexists with NETGEAR's Wall-Plugged and HomePlug compatible products Requires RJ45 Ethernet Network port Windows 2000 and XP friendly
Not for all users
2008-01-25
I have bought 4 of these and have been dissappointed. I have recently relocated for work, and I have to sell my house where I was before buying here. All of that said I have been using Wireless G with bridges and I have been unhappy with the speed. I thought about Wireless N but as I would have to buy a new access point and bridges I thought I would try these devices.
I am not happy with the speed at all. I live in a small (1000sqft) apt and my desktop is seperated from my server by one room. Copying a 3 GB file I have been averaging 2MB. I was getting better results over Wireless. I have read many good reviews with about this product, but I cannot recogmend it based on my experience.
200Mbps across one foot; 15Mbps across the house
2008-01-09
Yup it really does 200Mbps, but I need to take it further than one foot. After connecting each to the computer, changing the default network name to something most others would not use, I got the flashing blue 116Mbps across the room, 54Mbps into the next room and 15Mbps to the power near the cable modem. Amazing, considering the hostile environment of power wiring. Reliable connection too. The QoS tool can't find it through the NAT router, but who cares ? It sure seems fast enough. Really gets into the off-air (analog) TV signal, but the power switch on either fixes that. Anyway since I couldn't get a cable across the house, this will do just fine.
Watch out for bad wiring
2007-12-14
I bought this product together with the HDXB101, for a total of three devices. None of them worked together in our house, most likely because of bad wiring or something similar. I tried various combinations of the devices, different outlets, etc., to the same effect. At most I got about 1-2MB/s throughput to the Internet, even though I can get 8-9MB/s directly through my cable router. The blue LED should be solid according the NetGear, but the devices end up blinking pretty crazily. Kind of a shame we are renting the house, as I think we are stuck with the way the electricity is until we move to a new place. Buyer beware...
update 1/7/08 -- A friend of mine happened to have the NetGear 85Mb XE104G Powerline kit that he let me borrow over the weekend after I told him about my experiences with the HDX101. Turns out the XE104/103 works perfectly well with the wiring in my house, excellent throughput (7Mb) to the outside via my cable modem connection. I assume the higher signaling rate of the 200Mb kit might have something to do with it. Either way, I ordered the XE104G kit instead as it worked like a charm.
Great product
2007-11-22
Instead of going into a lot of detail about this product I'll keep it simple. The device works! It does exactly what it is advertised to do without any hassle or complication. No more worries about the strength of a wireless connection in remote parts of the house, no more concerns about losing my online connection at an inopportune moment due to some outside "interference".
I have three of these spread across the house to provide remote capability both wired and wirelessly (one room has a wireless router connected to it). I could not be happier with the results. The only thing for me to determine now is whether they will work with an ethernet based home automation system. If so, then I've hit the jackpot.
