Just received in the mail today: Nutiva(tm) brand Organic Hemp Protein Powder.

I have tried many, many kinds of protein powders. I have hated them all, for one reason or another. Most of the time it's because they're pre-sweetened with aspartame or saccharine or even straight-up sugar. I'm not really "into" too much sweet stuff. Because I have to consume untenably massive amounts on a regular basis, protein powder will need to be as unobtrusive as possible.

I wanted to try Nutiva's hemp powder because it also had a lot of other nutrients in it besides protein, and because all of these nutrients and protein were naturally-occurring, not chemically combined to form some alien mud substance.

Right away I noticed the difference. This stuff was powderized, but it's like powderized grass clippings -- olive-green in color, with a smell not unlike alfalfa hay.

And this stuff isn't artificial. Besides 11g of protein for every quarter-cup of powder, it also has Omega3 fatty acids in it, and a few other goodies.

I love the nutty flavor it lends to food. It changes the appearance of food, however, giving it a khaki-green cast, and it changes the texture of it a bit with a grittiness.

It's great in smoothies. Not being a big sweets-consumer, however, I also try to mix the hemp powder into other foods. Mashed potatoes is an interesting choice, particularly if you don't mind consuming green mashed potatoes! It can also be stirred into sauces.

I like it WAY better than any other protein powder I've ever tried.

Makes me think of ...patchouli

The grittiness is forgiveable (somehow I feel better that it's less processed), the earthy taste is not a total turn-off but I feel calling it delicious is a stretch. Of 3 different sweetners I tried with it, honey seemed best to neutralize the earthy aftertaste. It does seem to keep my energy stable, and it will definitely keep you "regular". I'd give it a 5 if not for the aftertaste because I like everything else about this product and the marketing of hemp as an excellent protein source.

I regularly buy this product along with Nutiva Chocolate Hempshakes. I used to add the protein powder to green smoothies for a boost of fiber, however I eventually decided that making smoothies everyday was too much work. I now add two tablespoons of this to the 4 tablespoons of chocolate Hempshake for a delicious shake with 75% RDI of fiber. It is true that it is a little gritty in whatever you're putting it in, however if you let it sit for a few minutes it smooths up nicely.

By the way, this product is intended to be MIXED with other drinks or smoothies, not taken straight with water. The reviewers who gave this a poor rating because of taste and only had the powder straight need to get a clue. It has no sugar or other additives; it's just ground hemp seed, unlike other fiber products loaded down with sugar or other sweeteners.

Nutiva makes great products and they really do improve your health. I drink two Hempshakes a day which means I'm getting 4 tablespoons of this hemp protein powder and I have not been sick at all this year, which is amazing being that I'm a teacher. I definitely recommend trying this out. Use Amazon Subscribe and Save for and even bigger discount on this stuff.

Great Value as compared to other places

I paid the same amount for just one bottle of the hemp protein somewhere else...before I found it on Amazon.

The Amazon ones do not come with the scoop though, but luckily I had saved mine.
