Not everyone needs the Denali five-piece outdoor utility kit. For example, if you never leave your house, you probably won't need this handy tool kit. But for everyone else, this is a must-have item. The kit includes a shovel, hatchet, flashlight, pruning saw, and multipurpose tool. The 23 1/2-inch-long folding shovel collapses to a mere 9 1/2 inches. Its 6-inch-wide steel blade can be locked straight for digging, or at a right angle for use as a pick. The 11-inch-long hatchet has a double-sided head that can be used for chopping wood and hammering in tent stakes. The full-size aluminum flashlight operates on two D-cell batteries (not included) and features a tilting head that allows you to direct light precisely where it's needed. The flashlight is also designed to stand upright for convenient hands-free use. The pruning saw has an aggressive-cutting, 8-inch-long blade that can quickly cut through branches, vines, kindling and small-dimension lumber. The 17 1/2-inch-long pruning saw has a comfortable rubber handle and it folds in half for safe storage.
The versatile multipurpose tool has a pair of wire-cutting pliers and 10 different foldaway blades that store in the tool's handles. Included are: knife, wood saw, awl, fish scaler with ruler, file, can opener, lanyard, bottle opener, slotted screwdriver, and Philips screwdriver. The multipurpose tool and all of its implements, folds into a pocket-size package measuring only 3/4 inches thick by 1 1/4 inches wide by 4 1/2 inches long.
All five tools fit into a convenient zippered carrying case that measures about 3 by 12 by 13 inches, so the kit is small enough to fit in car trunks, behind truck seats, or in a backpack. It's not a good sign when the inner packing box to an emergency or backpack kit is labelled "fragile."
The shovel would not lock positions, and the three sections wriggled uselessy back and forth. The flashlight head suffered from the same problem the shovel had: the head flopped loosely up and down. The pliers are made of soft metal. The saw looked like it would cut a branch or two in an emergency. The hatchet seemed to have a nice heft to it for its compact size and had a very sharp edge.
The concept and size are great for a car trunk emergency kit, but the Chinese quality is exceptionally poor. Too bad Amazon didn't look at these more closely, they surely wouldn't have accepted these kits.

A great gift item! I received this item for my birthday and am so impressed with it that I bought 3 to give way as presents. The tools are high quality and the case is small enough to fit in the car. A great emergency kit for under 50.00.

I consider the Kit an excellent value and would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting the added security that an emergency kit provides.

The Denali 5 piece Outdoor Utility and Emergency Kit is exactly what anyone would want to have in
their car especially during the winter. It comes conveniently stowed in an excellent case that holds
a good quality shovel, a multi tool set, a swivel flashlight and a hatchet.
Possibly for any stray fallen cherry trees that might need chopping (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
There is even available storage for any other small item you might want to add. I added an Emergency Safety Hammer to mine. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box as I wasn't really expecting the kit to be of such good quality! This would make a great gift. Buy it you never know when you might need to use it. Nice to have . . . just in case! ~ The Boss
Denali Outdoor Kit 2006-11-30
The tools appear to be identical to item number B00005A1HG, this kit is exactly what they say it is. I needed a kit that I could use from time to time when camping or for around the home. I don't think the tools are meant to be used everyday but they are more than adequate for the occasional use. The axe is extremely sharp and the case is compact and tough. You will not cut a tree down with the pruning saw but I had no problem with small branches, the handle is very comfortable and the blade is very sharp. I was a bit leery about the shovel at first but after tightening it down nice and tight, it became pretty sturdy and easy to use. It is after all a folding shovel. A good set for the price.
