The scanner is great....it is a shame that the film copier part does not adapt to 35mm film slides.
Terrible for books

When I tried to scan a large book I had to push down hard in order to scan the area close to the spine of the book. This caused the cheap, plastic, transparent sheet to bend inwards. That, in turn, interfered with the scanner as it moved down the sheet of paper. The end result: profoundly distorted images. I ended up using a photocopier to make a copy of the page and then scanning the copy. Buy something more solidly built.
Another example of a good Canon product!

I purchased this scanner because I needed something lightweight to travel with. The most important deciding factor was that I own two Canon desktop printers that were both inexpensive, reliable, ink replacements are reasonably priced, and have surpassed print quality expected for the price.
Other reviews note that this scanner feels flimsy, which I was concerned about, but in having used it over a period of about 12 hours to scan hundreds and hundreds of family historical data while on the road, I can say with complete certainty that, for the price, it is of acceptable quality and performs fine. I only scan photos and paper documents and it has been a great performer. The quality of scans is good, it creates multi-page PDFs, though each page must be scanned individually, and the speed isn't as terrible as some larger office-environment scanners I've used in the past. Granted, a document feeder would have been ideal, but that would drastically increase the price and decrease the ease of traveling with it.
In my opinion, this scanner has been well worth the purchase price, very user friendly to operate, fantastic in that there is no power cord to contend with, the space-saver upright position is a nice feature, the quality of output is good, and it fits very nicely into my existing computer bag with the laptop and all other accessories.
Nice flat bed scanner

Set up is easy. High resolution produces crisp and sharp image. Good value for the money.
Nice unit, until it fails, and that wont take long.

The CanoScan LiDE 600F worked great for about a month, then the mechanism began to jerk and blur the image. Amazon replaced it, and the new one failed in about a month, with the mechanism frozen in the park position. Now I had to deal with Canon tech support. (and yes, for the idiots at Canan Tech Support, the shipping lock was unlocked.) The third unit arrived DOA.
What happened? Canon used to be a name you could trust

Scan family snapshots, school projects, important documents-even your child's spelling award. Whatever the task, this versatile scanner makes it simple. Large function buttons automate the process, so it's easy to scan originals and e-mail them or create PDFs. The Advanced Double-Hinge-Lid opens 180 degrees allowing clear, complete scans of your thickest originals such as notebooks. Plus, the provided stand holds the scanner vertically, saving you desktop space.Produce scans with spectacular resolution of up to 4800 x 9600 color dpi. To save time, simultaneously scan up to 6 frames of 35mm film (negatives or positives). The USB 2.0 interface enables the fastest possible image transfers and scanning speeds. The CanoScan LiDE 600F allows great scans from any angle: position it facing you, turn it 90 degrees, or place it on its side (with included stand) to save space. Produce clean copies / scans even of thick items that do not lie flat on the platen. The included software greatly enhances resolution, up to an amazing 19200 color dpi. Built-in retouching technology removes much of the dust and scratches on original prints, and revives faded images. One convenient cable to your computer provides both a USB connection and power. Large function buttons automate the scanning process - select the use for the image, and it's ready in seconds.
Great scanner at a great price

I've been using this scanner for a few months now on my Mac, and I love it. I should say I'm not a graphics expert, but here are the good points from my perspective:
* Fine detail: the resolution of the images it produces is high enough for any purpose I can think of, and I've been very happy with the sharpness of the detail.
* Great color: I have to say, the color fidelity blows me away.
* Small size: I don't keep it out on my desk all the time, since I only use it a few times a week, but it's so slim it can be stored on a bookcase between books.
* Film attachment: I wasn't expecting great performance from the film-scanning attachment that comes with it, because I figured you get what you pay for. But I've been pleasantly surprised. Of course, it's no substitute for a dedicated slide scanner (but those cost anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars). But I've been getting really nice results. It should be noted, however, that this will scan film, not whole slides. So you have to destroy your slide to get the film out of it to lay it flat and scan it. For me, this was fine, since I didn't want the slides anymore. And of course, the film can always be re-mounted in a new slide if you want. But you will have to rip them apart to scan them.
Some people have complained about the quality of the software that ships with it, but I haven't noticed it to be particularly bad. And if you use Photoshop, well, then you really only interact with the Canon software during the initial import phase. Yes, the software that activates the buttons on the scanner is clunky, but I don't really use the buttons, and I don't think most people will.
All in all, I'm thrilled with this scanner. Especially for the price.
Nice consumer scanner for photos

My wife's grandma passed away and we've been scanning her old photos. This scanner is awesome, though granted, I didn't try any other 'modern' color scanner. My previous one is a SCSI one circa 1996.
The great thing about this is the hardware fade-removal, making all the old and faded photos look 'newer'.
the only thing is, it's somewhat slow. takes about 30 seconds per scan. I don't mind, since this is a consumer-grade scanner.
I also found that scanning at 600dpi is just as good as 1200dpi, with the added benefit of a smaller file, even when saved at maximum quality.
Works first time, every time.

I bought it for the copy function and I was looking for easy use. I received it, hooked up the cable, put in the disk, did what it said, and it did the rest. I put in a paper, hit the copy button, and a copy came out the laser printer. It was the easiest scanner I have ever used. I use it with my Imac and not a PC. Every MAC item I use is difficult to make it work. This one worked right out of the box.
Good 4 photos, but not for books

This is a good scanner for photos. But if you want to scan books, it's a bit slow, and difficult to use. You need to really push the book down into the scanner to get a flat image. So if you want to get a book scanner, you are better off getting: Plustek Opticbook 3600 Book Scanner.
But for photos it's great. I think the best feature for this product is the you don't need a power cord to scan. The USB option is fantastic.
