Tivo Series3, $1000 price tag, 200x too much, BEWARE
2008-06-12
The only thing Tivo's done right (besides allowing you to share your media with your networked computers) is additional storage via eSATA external harddrives.
My Wireless G USB Tivo adapter didn't work without a software upgrade to my Tivo DVR (it came with software that was 2 years out of date). My Tivo DVR had out of date software, the cable card you are required to get to make it work is not compatible with ONDEMAND, and it costs about 200x as much as just renting a Comcast DVR.
If not for the ability to add the additional storage and export media to my computer, my Tivo DVR would have been a complete rip off. As it is, I still feel cheated.
If I had it to do all over again, I would have just gone with a DVR from my cable company.
TiVo Series 3 with BrightHouse cable
2008-06-04
I bought this TiVo Series 3 in February and had some resistance from my wife. She absolutely loves it now, as do my kids!
The TiVo is intuitive and has virtually no learning curve. I've had some issues with the cable cards that have nothing to do with the TiVo.
When I tell people the features of the TiVo, they regret having their BrightHouse DVRs! They miss out on features like sending a recorded show across the Internet to another TiVo, etc.
It was a very good decision; well worth the money!

I had a comcast DVR prior to this one and there is no comparison TiVo is far superior.
TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder

The TiVo Series 3 HD recorder has easy to setup instructions and all the cables that you will need to hook-up the recorder. The Series 3 TiVo has a complete display that shows the name of the program being recorded even when you are not using the DVR. The TiVo HD recorder that is less expensive, but this low cost HD TiVo does not include all the cables and does not have the program being recorded displayed on the display even while viewing the program. I use the wireless TiVo AG0100 to update programming through my cable network and to transfer programs from one TiVo to the other. The only draw back was that it took our Time Warner Local Cable service three trips before both cable cards would work probably. Once both cable cards were programmed and working, we have not had any other problems. Time Warner did not charge us for these extra trips to get the cable cards working and did a fantastic effort to get them working!
Love our TIVO!!!

We have been fans of TIVO from our very first one. We upgraded to one with more memory about 2 years ago and have just purchased the 300 hour HD TIVO Series 3 when we got our new HD TV. As always, we are amazed at all it can do. We couldn't be without it! You'll be spoiled and never go back to "just tv". It is extremely easy to use and has lots of great extra features. Don't be fooled by the DVRs that cable companies want you to use. They don't have nearly the features of TIVO. Get it soon! You'll love it.TiVo TCD648250B Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder
Warning! You may not get any HD channels
2008-07-12
Time Warner Cable, Dallas, only one 720p channel worked. Multiple tech visits, multiple cable cards, much wasted time.
And then tivo makes it difficult to cancel (the only option not available online), where you have to sit through several minutes of extremely aggressive advertising on hold.
Otherwise, the quality of the device is pretty good. Too bad they have pissed off the entire industry and have to rely on the boneheads from the local cable company to install a cable card.... that doesn't actually work.
Also, read the fine print, most cable companies (Time Warner, for example) are broadcasting most of their stuff in 720p. Not 1080i. Don't believe the hype.
I'm overjoyed with the Series 3 capabilities
2008-07-08
I've owned a TiVo for over 8 and a half years and can no longer live without one. It's what I've wanted all my TV-watching life. I recently bought an HD TV and needed to upgrade to an HD TiVo in order to take advantage of the new HD resolution.
While waiting for the HD TiVo to arrive, I got an HD cable box recorder from Time Warner. It did the job but was difficult to use and I filled it up half way in about a week. But it worked in a pinch. It's like comparing an old cell phone with an iPhone. They both make calls, but there's no comparison beyond that as far as ease of use. No one can compare with TiVo for that.
My existing Tivo was old technology, but I had upgraded it with larger hard drives (started with only 14 hour capacity but now have 300 hours) and an internet connection for downloading TV shows through various hacks. Still, I have been missing out on the latest TiVo technology.
The HD Tivo is amazing! I'm glad I was able to wait until the Series 3 HD version was available. HD capability is a must for me now, and the Series 3 lets you add an extra hard drive for more capacity without having to hack it! In fact, the new TiVo does almost EVERYTHING I used to do with my old hacked TiVo--and more--without the need for hacking.
You are legally allowed to download TV shows from your TiVo to your computer and convert them for your iPod or even burn them to DVDs (for your own use!). You are also allowed to UPLOAD your own movies or TV show episodes to your TiVo for easy viewing)! And you can rent movies and have them loaded onto your TiVo for you. It will also show photos and play music from your computer. You can schedule recordings for your unit from the TiVo web site from any web browser. This is everything you would want, and more--and all without hacking! And it all works on my Mac (PCs, too, of course).
Also, I didn't know what I was missing by not having a dual-tuner recorder all this time. I have very few recording conflicts now and usually shows record without me even knowing that it's happened. With two cable cards installed from my cable company, I no longer need my cable box (that saves me about $8/month). The TiVo can run everything and change channels instantly--no more IR blaster hanging in front of the cable box to change channels (or miss changing, occasionally). There's a little display on the front of the unit that shows the name of the TV shows currently being recorded, along with a clock. Neat!
There are even a few games on the TiVo you can play using the remote!
Best of all, the lifetime subscription is available again (at a discount if you already have a TiVo). And the price of the recorder has dropped substantially ($200 rebate coupons are regularly available). This makes it very affordable for the function. After all, this is a device that I use every day and it's working for me 24-hours a day, searching for shows I may like -- suggestions to fill any free space it may have. There's ALWAYS something good on TV with the TiVo on the job. And now, it's in high-def.
The HD video takes up quite a bit more space than standard definition, however. The 30 hours of HD (or 300 standard) weren't going to be enough for me, so I also got the expansion drive for about $150, which gives about 60 more hours of HD. I haven't needed it, but probably will soon (once you connect it, it's there for life--so I'm waiting until I'm full).
Anyway, I don't see how you can go wrong with this. I wish my old TV had broken earlier so I could have lived in this luxury sooner. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and I'm just overjoyed with it.
High-tech marvel !!
2008-07-04
This box is simply outstanding. As a Tivo enthusiast I was already familiar with the great service features and my old Series 2 has served faithfully. I'd researched before buying the Series 3HD but still I was unprepared for just how cool this thing really is. With two CableCards installed and both Tivo boxes wireless networked I can watch a recorded program, transfer a program, and record a favorite -- simultaneuosly!!
The video quality is greatly improved coming through the 3HD -- even regular TV looks better.
My one gripe is that I was forced to by the Tivo wireless USB adapter.
I had a perfectly good Linksys G but the Series 3 box only supports its own adapter(a discounted $40 @ Amazon, by the way).
All in all I am very pleased with Series 3 HD and glad that I started building my new home theater system with it as a key component.
Great tool for improving TV watching
2008-07-03
Tivo Series3 HD is a big step up from version 2. Outstanding HD quality, great way to eliminate the cable box, and can become the media center for your entertainment system, if one sets it up right (show off photos and listen to you digital music collection). The Cable company was a little slow on the install, but well worth the effort to set it up right. Plus, I'm no longer charged by my cable company for a box, remote or the HD service by my cable company which the savings more then the monthly subscrition. Just the saving in drinks (vs being at a bar) while watching HD sports games has paid for the device. Time shifting is really the only way to watch cable TV. Tivo and the cable companies are adding content all the time making this product better by the day. Do your self a favor and join the Tivo revolution.
Unreliable and will not work with Time Warner Cards
2008-06-27
I was very excited to receive the new Tivo. However after Amazon's prompt shipment the nightmares begun. It is extremely unreliable when it comes to networking (either PC or Mac). It took a week of constant chatter on the Tivo Forum to finally get it to work semi-reliably. I was willing to go with that, but the Time Warner came by to install the cards. Actually the installation went fine, however after we powered up the TivO we discovered that 95% of my HD channels could not be received. A call to Time Warner confirmed that their Cable Cards will not work with the Tivo and will only receive about 5% of the HD channels. So what good does it do to have a sophisticated device that won't work with the service I pay for. I am now in the process of returning the Tivo, canceling the cable cards and hopefully get Tivo to honor their 30 day warranty.
