Norton Antivirus 2007 is a nightmare 2007-02-11
I'm responsible for 10 computers at our organization. Last year we purchased Norton Antivirus 2006. It was such a resource hog that it stopped our older computers (550 Mhz) from working and I had to uninstall from all computers. After reading reviews that said 2007 was leaner, I tried to install this on 6 computers. Only 1 install went without problems. Installing on three other computers took 3 days, and I'm still not through with computer 5. Sometimes the program won't install. Once it crashes during install, it leaves behind broken code that prevents reinstall unless you use the Norton uninstall tool, which removes ALL Norton products. So in addition to uninstalling and reinstalling Antivirus, you also have to reinstall Norton Ghost or any other Norton products. On the computer I'm still fighting with the install went smoothly, but during the update the program hung up and now I can't open Norton Antivirus. Even worse, when I open a Word document, the Norton Antivirus starts scanning the document and freezes the computer. What a nightmare!

Disappointing to say the least 2007-02-07
I did a little research after trying to install this product and found that Symantec is no longer rated very well for Anti Virus. One site that states this is Consumer Reports (they are towards the bottom of the ratings). It has become major bloatware and its stability isn't what it used to be. Maybe this is why Peter Norton sold his interests and bailed out. I am far from being a novice, but this thing gave me a fight the whole way. So on with my saga.

First, this product was supposed to be for Windows XP and 2000 Pro. Even the box says this. But when I insert the CD in a W2K Pro machine all I got was an error box showing the error icon and the OK button. Real informative. Going through the back door I try to install without going through the CD autostart program. Now I get a box that says it requires XP 32 bit. So that leaves out 2 of the machines I bought this for.

So I go to a machine running XP. First one loads OK, but it says it is incompatible with my firewall (ZoneAlarm) which I happen to trust a lot. Then on the second machine it goes through the install (which takes 45 min) and then runs the autoupdate and hangs halfway through. I finally had to abort it after it sat there an hour (I was hoping it was just another slow moment). Rebooted and the program was no longer running. Starting it up myself resulted in it failing to load. Now I'm stuck, it won't allow me to uninstall nor reload it again. Had to obtain a removal tool from their web site and it promptly removed every Symantec product on the machine. Maybe this was the writing on the wall?

By now I'm a couple days into the drama. Meanwhile, the first XP machine that loaded fine did another automatic update and guess what. It locked up half way through. Now it will not run and had to be removed the same way.

So I am now the proud owner of ZoneAlarm's Internet Suite. It cost less than the NAV (both 5 user versions), and loaded much faster. Ten minutes and I was done, where it was an hour into NAV when things worked and it loaded. I am taking this up with Symantec and trying to get a refund. They can keep it. I've been less satisfied with every upgrade and this one finally broke the camel's back. Maybe I'll try again someday if I come up with a new camel, but they don't grow well in Seattle.

ADDED 3-12-2007: I have also noted that after removing NAV that things I could not explain before have been cured. For instance, the web site [...] would not load many of it's pages correctly, they would show the text coding instead of html. Now that I am NAV free, all of the pages on this site load with no problems. Hmmmm...

What Happened to the Old Norton? 2006-10-09
Norton is still the 800LB. Gorilla of Antivirus software, but I think more and more people are realizing that bigger does not mean better!
The old days when Peter Norton made an excellent antivirus program are long gone, and these days Norton is just a mass produced product of Symantec's.
Customer service is through an Internet Database, and you must pay over $40 just to speak with someone even when Norton lets you down and lets a virus slip in. The biggest problem is that this program is a huge hog of system resources. It is no wonder that the ratings are so poor on Norton these days. I bought Trend Micro's PC-Cillin and have not looked back. There product is less expensive and includes free phone support, and they have received all sorts of awards for their product.

Honest and Intelligent Review 2007-11-19
I have read many people have had serious issues with this software, however, that mostly stems from computer and software ignorance rather than Norton 2007 being a poor program. Many people complain this program slows down their computer to the point they cannot use it. First of all, you don't need to set this software to run a virus scan when you turn on your computer. If you do this, you're simply an idiot. This program prevents you from acquiring viruses in the first place so running a scan at start up is completely frivolous. You only really need to run a scan maybe once a week and that's just for the heck of it really.

This anti-virus software has blocked at least a couple dozen viruses, trojans, and port attacks on my computer. I've had this software since the beginning of 2007 and I've been nothing but pleased with its performance. Any anti-virus program (when running a scan) uses up a large chunk of system resources. However, as I stated before, there's no reason to run a scan at startup or more than once a week b/c this program prevents you from acquiring any virus or trojans in the first place. Remember, don't set it to run a scan at start up and if you do run a scan, don't do anything else that's system resource intense while running it.

Another major point, make sure you delete your termporary internet files at least once a month. All those old web page pictures and such, from sites you'll never go to again, end up getting scanned b/c they are saved on your computer. Norton having to scan all this old junk takes a lot of time. If you delete this once a month, you'll cut down the time of the scan by almost half...seriously!

Also, make sure you defragment at least quarterly during the year. Installing/uninstalling programs leads to slower performance b/c files get fragmented. Also, make sure you have a decent hard drive in the first place. You should have at least an 80 gig by today's standards...and if yours is smaller, make sure you've got several gigs of free space at least. If not, of course your computer is going to run slowly no matter what you're doing...especially during a virus scan. It's up to you to take care of your computer and keep it running efficiently. If you don't, it's your fault not the software you're using. If you're hardware is out of date, it's time to upgrade and get with the times people.

If you're using an old/weak computer, of course you're going to experience a great decline in your system performance when running a scan. That's your problem for not having an updated system not the software's problem. If you aren't running a scan, this program does not drain your system resources and sits ready to stop any intrusion attempts when they occur. I'm using a P4 3.2 gig HT with 1 gig of RAM. Pretty basic tech by today's new duo and quad cores being the new standard. If you don't have at least a P4 that's running at least 2.8 gig...you're way behind the times and need to update your pc or laptop. Don't blame the software for being slow when it's your pc or laptop that's egregiously out of date.

Bottom line, Norton 2007 has proved itself to be a great product time and time again. It has saved me dozens of times from viruses, trojans, and intrusion attempts. Stop blaming this software for your ignorance and out of date computers.

Great Product 2007-07-27
Works great as with every NAV I've used for over a decade.
As long as your computer was made this century, and you don't install ANYTHING else by Norton, you should have no problems with Norton Antivirus. I have had Norton Antivirus since my first computer with times in-between using any antivirus program you can think of and the only one that never let me down was NAV (others did in various ways by letting a virus in, 'crashing' for no apparent reason, constantly causing problems with legit programs or saying they were virus's and not allowing me to exclude them, etc). I help people repair their computers and do 'tech support' and all but one problem concerning NAV was because of the user or because of having other Norton applications installed.

I will say (and this is the reason I knocked it down a star) that the quality of NAV makes you think that the other things they have will be quality products. I will not buy anything besides Antivirus from Norton. NONE of there other programs are worth anything. If you are having problems go with only NAV and see what happens.
If you still have problems your PC is:
A: too old
B: has problems before the NAV install
C: still has other Norton programs installed that you missed

Terrible program. Now you have 5 ways to kill your computer 2007-07-19
Could have been a good program, but instead is a terrible resource hog.Your computer could lock up at 100 percent and jam.It misses a lot of spyware and viruses There are plenty of better programs out there. If your older verion is working, just renew.Thank you for reading my review

Not worth the headache 2007-04-01
Unfortunately, it seems once you have downloaded NAV 2007, your whole computer will not function properly. Internet Explorer malfunctions, and I also received a blue screen (fear of crash) stating that what ever program was recently installed, I should reinstall it. I did so, but the problems did not go away. I called Norton, they told me to run in safe mode without norton. My computer was back to normal, so it was Norton causing all the problems. I unistalled it and went with another product, after spending the $60 and many hours with Norton help desk. Don't believe me, do a search on any search engine, and you will see the many problems and no apparent solutions for this program!! Up till now, I have only used Norton, and never thought twice when buying the update. I'm now moving on to another product.

NAV 2007 is improved over former editions 2007-02-24
I notice with gratitude that Symantec has removed many glitches from NAV.
Installation is now faster and smoother. The program is running well in the background, updating itself and sending notifications of any attention it needs.
