Stunning picture, but slow to boot up 2008-03-01
I received the Toshiba HD-A2 as a Christmas gift (2007). On the whole I really, really like it. The picture quality of HD-DVD's is fantastic and the sound is awesome. I have this device connected to a Toshiba DLP HDTV, a JVC receiver and Bose Accousti-Max Series II speakers.

Pros:
1. Great picture w/up to 1080i/720p
2. Great sound
3. Ethernet connection
4. Very good up-conversion of standard DVDs

Cons:
1. Very slow to boot-up. It takes about a minute to warm up before you can load a disc.
2. Does not allow USB based wi-fi cards. This was an issue for me because my TV room does not have a network drop.
3. Internet update process is slow (> 15 minutes)

If you get a HD-DVD player, be sure to have a network drop near by for initial setup. It is important to get the latest updates. Otherwise you may pop in a HD-DVD disc only to have it not load/play. This happened to me on my first disc. But once I applied the latest firmware all was good.

didn't work on my main tv 2008-02-28
I have an older (2003) 61 inch Sony rear projection tv, that the hd dvd player did not work on. I used the component setup that I had with my regular dvd player, and the picture was blurred. I bought a hdmi cable and hooked it up to a newer tv (2006) that I had, and it works fine. A work of caution - if your tv is older and doesn't have a hdmi input, chances are you won't be able to use the hd dvd player.

The best picture I have seen from an HD DVD 2008-02-26
I have had this DVD player for about 6 months and have had no problems with it....it has the best picture I have seen produced by a dvd player. After hearing about HD DVD movies I purchased the Samsung Blu Ray.....it didn't work out of the box....I'm confused why this, HD DVD isn't the lead based on product performance (just read the blu ray comments) and price.

DO NOT BUY 2008-02-25
Do not buy any Toshiba HD DVD players. Press releases state that they are no longer in the HD DVD business. They have quit making them.

Do Not Buy! 2008-02-19
Do not buy this player! It is true that Blu-Ray has won the format war, and there will be no movies made for HD-DVD players after the next few months.

You'll basically be buying an expensive standard DVD player.

Nice unit 2008-06-26
This is a nice, affordable high-def unit. Although it's "only" 1080i, the picture looks extremely good. I've watched various movies after upgrading the internal firmware. No issues with playback.

It's also an excellent upscaling DVD player.

I have two of these. I plan to keep watching HD content for a long time. HD-DVD discs are a lot cheaper than Blu-Ray discs at the moment, and so are the players. You can easily find this one nowadays for about $100. Very much worth it.

Works Great... Too bad Toshiba Screwed Us 2008-06-09
Love the unit but it is worthless now. I would not be surprised to see a class action suit against Toshiba. I will not buy Toshiba products ever again.

Very good player 2008-03-30
Hello..
Toshiba hd dvd player a2, wow what can i say, I own a sony wega 50" television that is 2 years old now. I just purchased this thinking well the hd dvd players are going out from this company, was it worth it, I pondered it all day yesterday before opening the box. Going to bestbuy to get some hd dvd's well they were shipped back to the warehouses, so i went to the used dvd place and they had 7 of them that i bought plus another 2 at walmart, plus i'd say 3 or 4 on here, i put in a couple movies last night that i purchased, the phantom of the opera is the best movie, so much different colors, and the picture quality with the hdmi connection i must say is better then my blu ray player. The player takes about 20 seconds to load but not very long neither, i say this player is worth it because of the fact that there is so much you could do with it. I can't wait until amazon ships the dukes of hazard to see the experience, if you have a hdtv this would be a great product to buy, but don't get it if your expecting new movies to come out if they phase hd dvd's out but if you get the older movies its much worth it.
Thanks all.

we all deserve $50 gift cards on these obsolete loser HD players...Amazon needs to step up like Best Buy already has! 2008-03-20
the title says it all!

$50 gift card necessary for customer goodwill...format war was settled well before many of us consumers purchased these players yet these manufacturers and retailers like Amazon, Best Buy,Circuit City and the like took advantage of the consumer.Foster and Martin know nothing!
