Too much artificial sweetener, not enough satisfaction.
2008-05-02
For reference, I'm not overweight. I'm 5'8" and 140 pounds but often find myself on-the-go and needing to keep my stomach satisfied without opting for fast food. I bought a couple boxes of these at the grocery store because I couldn't find any of the Atkin's variety. I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. Unlike Atkin's, these shakes are much thinner and taste very "diety". I'm a diet pop drinker and go for low-carb options often, so I'm not flat out adverse to artificial sweetener. But these are just too much. And they're not filling at all! After an Atkin's shake, I feel satisfied for hours. A couple after having one of these, it's like it was no more than chocolate milk! I prefer the thicker, less artificial taste of Atkin's by a mile. I'll be finishing these as soon as possible and switching back!

Lots of protein and a rich creamy taste without all the carbs. I recommend this product!
Better than Adkins

These shakes are much better than the Adkins shakes. They have more of a chocolate flavor, and better texture.

Slim Fast Low Carb Shake

Low carb. Hardly any sugar and 20 grams of protein. Much better than the Optima that has a lot more sugar and a lot less protein. I wish they still sold the dark chocolate flavor.
saccharin coated chocolate flavored chalk!

I think the title says it all.
I tried this after having the slim fast High protien drinks and reading that this low carb drink has more protein. I'm not on a lo carb diet, but low cal, high protein is my goal so I figured I pick up a few to try.
Neither my wife nor I could drink it. The taste was just awful. And it lingered long after my one drink. I had to get some water to wash it down, kind of like chocolate flavored cough syrup. Fortunately I don't have a case of these, only 2 four packs.
To each their own, but I'd warn you to try a small pack before buying a case. And I did just read one of the other reviewers suggestion on how to make this drink palatable. I'm glad I don't have to go low carb. I'll just stick to my Slim Fast High Protein drinks.

Serve it cold but not frozen. It is as good as a thick shake from McDonalds but with only 2 net grams of carbs & loads of nutrients. I have 1 for breakfast every day. Keeps me full through lunch.
I'm type 2.

I am a type 2 diabetic and wanted to something easy I could have as a snack or for lunch. I found that I was stressing so much over what I was going to have for lunch that would fit into my new life style change, I was getting overly hungry and then get a blood sugar spike from not eating. I tried the Atkins shakes, and they weren't taht great, but did the trick. But the sugar alcohols gave me gas. I heard about the low car slim fast but couldn't find them. Finally I found them at the Navy Exchange, and I love them.

I have tried many of the different shakes like this. Atkins for example. Non of them where really all that good. I found this in my local grocery store and figured why not.
This is the best low carb shake I have every had. I should have known, since I like the other slim fast products too. I am even happier now that I subscribe to amazons delivery service of once a month. Can't beat that.
I have found a way to make these taste better!

I liked these because the carbs are so low. I sometimes overindulge over the holidays or vacations and a low carb few weeks can get me back on track fast! However, these taste funny to me. They have an odd smell and aftertaste. I even tried freezing them. Still blech. I bought a pack of 24 of these, so I had to figure out something!
SO I tried adding a pinch of salt, about 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, and nearly a tsp. of vanilla to a can. It is actually pretty good!
First, freeze the can until solid. Open the can with a can opener from the bottom and dump it in a big measuring cup. Then smoosh it in with a blender until it is like a Frosty from Wendy's. (You may have to microwave it for a minute or two to make it soft enough to blend.) Then add the salt, vanilla, and cinnamon.
The vanilla helps mask the aftertaste, while the cinnamon helps with the smell (but doesn't add carbs.) Akins people, you could even add a little heavy cream for texture. South Beach? Maybe skim milk.
Next, I am trying some mint oil instead of vanilla/cinnamon (after I buy some!) as this seems like it would also work. Mint chocolate milkshake? that sounds good on a diet!
I eat it with a spoon. I still can't eat the whole can at a time, but it is good when you are craving something sweet (besides sugar free jello!)
I hope this recipe helps some of you who may not like the taste of these!
