Don't Use Apple for Battery Replacement!
2008-06-30
I saved about $60 by replacing the battery on my ipod mini myself. Very easy to do. I found a step by step video on Cnet.com on how to replace the battery and it worked perfectly.

Battery works great, however, the instructions are only for replacing the battery in an iPod Photo 1st - 4th generations and video. This is a confusing listing. The actual product title is for a 750mAh battery, whle a the description keeps mentioning a 650mAh. What I actually got was an 850mAh. It's always better to get more then less. Satisfied. The tools work great. You'd be hard pressed to find anything you already have in your garage that do the trick as well as the ones here.
*****DO YOUR RESEARCH AND LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN BEFORE REPLACING YOUR IPOD BATTERY!*****
Replacing the battery is only cheaper if you know what you're doing. Otherwise you could end up replacing the entire iPod itself.

iPod mini Battery Replacement Kit - 750 mAhAfter my frustation of trying to find out how to replace my ipod mini battery, apple wanted 69.00 for the battery replacement program in which you would have to send your ipod to them. I somehow knew that there had to be another way to replace the battery. As always my search landed me on amazon. After finding the replacement battery and reading customer reviews, I gave this product a try. I had nothing to loose because the price was beyond reasonable although the shipping cost more than the product the price remains beyond reasonable. I received the product fast and it came with everything I needed to replace my battery even handy tools. The package insert was not very helpful, but a previous customer recommended going to CNET.com and veiw the video to replace the ipod mini battery. I had ordered 2 kits. It literally took me 15mins to replace the first battery and 5 mins to replace the second battery after looking at the video on CNET.com. It was not difficult at all. Not only was it not difficult to replace the battery but my ipod had atleast over 4hours of continuious play, at first the battery died after about 40mins. It was really easy to replace the battery. Just take your time. I did use tweezers to pick up the tiny screws. You will know what I mean when you replace your battery. I am so thankful for reviews because I always purchase products based on reviews. I highly recommend this product

Exactly what my title says, I followed the instructions to the T and everything came out well. I do recommend that you are a bit handy and have dealt with similar stuff to an ipod because it is a very fragile and meticulous device.
Applie IPOD Mini battery replacement

I bought this product to replace the battery which was not lasting less them 30min. Product itself may be fine, but replacing it in mini may be tricky and may damage the unit. Instructions which comes is not for mini IPOD. You will need to send email to vendor to get it or find it on cnet.com for video instruction.
I would recommend not spending money to try doing it yourself as you might not get it working after the attempt.

Compared to the original battery that came in your iPod mini, our 600 mAh 3.7-volt Lithium-Ion battery provides 7 to 10 hours of playtime between charges. This is a conservative estimate, as we'd rather under-promise and then over-deliver (that being said, we regularly receive feedback from our customers reporting even longer playtimes). This robust battery is 100 percent compatible with your iPod mini and is guaranteed to last for one full year. Also included is the iOpener, a fantastic tool that opens your iPod mini without scratching it. This durable plastic tool has a sharp, wedge-shaped tip that's perfect for slipping into the tight seam between the white end caps and the metal casing, and has a long handle that allows you to firmly grasp the tool. Other companies suggest using a metal screwdriver (please don't do this!) or saddle you with two cheap, light-blue tools that are so flimsy, the tip bends and quickly becomes worthless. And then what do you do? Only iPodJuiceDotCom has the iOpener to efficiently open your device. Also included is a set of mini screwdrivers to remove two small screws and a metal clip from inside the player. This kit also includes a set of the most detailed instructions available today. Our printed instructions include professionally-taken, color photographs with detailed text that walk you step-by-step through the battery replacement process. Other companies have you go it alone or give a black-and-white photocopy with fuzzy photos that fail to point out areas where additional caution is needed.
I got my ipod mini back!

I ordered an ipod mini battery from Osprey-Talon...
The battery works great! After replacing the battery,
my ipod is as good as new! I don't have to charge
the ipod every night... my old battery couldn't hold charge
overnight even if it wasn't used at all...
Now I charge once, and can use the ipod for several days.
I haven't exactly tested how long a single charge lasts,
but I can tell you it's definitely 7+ hours... a significant
improvement over 2 hours I was getting before.
The last reviewer mentioned about poor instructions...
I never bothered to look at the instructions that came
with the battery. I just went to CNet and found
an instruction there. The whole process took maybe
10 minutes... took 3 minutes to pry open the case and
slide the motherboard out. 1 minute to replace the battery.
6 minutes to slide the motherboard back into its case...
that turned out to be a bit tricky. But overall, the whole
process was pretty easy, with minimal damage to the
exterior case (a bit of scratches from prying open the case).
This battery comes with two screwdrivers, a flat head for
prying open the top and bottom part of the case,
and a phillips head for the screws.

My trusty iPod Video recently broke down, leaving me to return to my long-forgotten iPod Mini. To my dismay, the battery barely lasted an hour. I searched online for a fix and lo and behold, I found the answer to my prayers! Or so I thought.
I just received the package today and there were quite a few problems:
1. Though the sticker on the package indicates this is for an iPod Mini, the instructions clearly show and explain an iPod Video being opened.
2. As for the instructions themselves, well they leave something to be desired. Amazon lists them as "detailed" and in "color." Apparently the printer ran out of ink. And the writer was having an off-day.
3. Finally, Amazon also boasts that this product comes with a very unique "iOpener." The instructions refer to this as well and yet.. it's nowhere to be seen. My package included two screw-drivers, the battery itself, and the cheap instructions. No special tool specifically designed to open my iPod.
So, as you can see, my original iPod Mini battery remains. I'm not sure if there was a mix up at Amazon, or with the creators of the kit, but there were too many problems to be overlooked. It's as if they ran out of iPod Mini kits, picked out an iPod Video one and stuck a sticker on it, thinking it would fool me.
I guess I can't rate the product I actually ordered, but my experience hasn't been good.
New life for your iPod Mini, but know what you're getting into

I knew it was time for a new battery when my iPod Mini would barely hold a charge for 1 day. After installing this battery, my Mini is as good as new. This kit would still be a bargain at double its price.
HOWEVER, know what you're getting into before purchasing. Opening the iPod case and replacing the battery is not an easy task. It's not even remotely similar to replacing the battery in a cell phone or even a smoke detector. You need to have a very steady hand and be able to follow instructions perfectly. One slip of a tool and you'll easily kill iPod.
The kit helpfully includes all the tools you need. I highly recommend not just reading, but STUDYING the instructions carefully before getting started. If you're one of those "who needs instructions?" types of people, this is not for you. Really. If I haven't scared you off by now, and you're normally comfortable working with tiny tools and screws, then go for it.
After skilled installation, works great

Knowing that previous reviewers had warned against amateurs trying to install the new battery, I asked my electrical engineer friend to do it. It took him about 4 minutes, and my Mini is now alive again!
