Customer Reviews
good but needs improvement
2007-11-23
I bought mine in April for much less that it's being sold for here in Nov 2007 so I thought it was a good deal even after the end cap fell off and was lost within days of purchase as the cap is not secure.
The next thing I noticed was if I carried it on my key chain as it's being hyped it kept getting turned on because the button sticks out so I stopped carrying it.
It worked fine for about 7 months when it stopped working with an error code Er 6 which is not listed in the manual so I've printed my receipt and requested an RMA at their website and am now sending it back.
It's a useful tool; I use it to check the tire and brake temperatures on my motorhome, however it has several design flaws as mentioned.
Months later: Custormer service is excellent. When I returned the defective unit to the manufacturer they replaced it with a new one in a timely fashion without question. This one I don't carry and expect it to last a long time.

Best Features - portable, silent operation, instant readout, versatile.
As a progeny of infrared technology, there are many applications possible with a Thermo Hawk, such as predictive maintenance trending of large pumps, valves, breakers, engines. Temperature changes over time indicate a problem may be brewing.
In addition, the Thermo Hawk is a useful investigation tool that can be beneficial in a variety of occupations, such as electronics troubleshooting, medical, law enforcement, manufacturing.
On a micro scale, for the rest of us, you can use the Thermo Hawk to check tires, check your turkey temperature, your baby's formula. It does not require touching the measuring surface so it's neat, safe, sanitary. Small enough to explore the crevices and get to things you can't even see. It's not practical for oral temperature but it can check ear temp, skin temp.
Still Needs Work -
The On button is not recessed, this button sticks out on the Thermo Hawk 200 and I've set it off accidentally. My design recommendation to the company - use the existing recessed LCD readout window and incorporate a touch-pad feature.
The Thermo Hawk cap covering the business end is a snap-on. Mine works fine but could be easily lost or fall off, as my cap once became detached when snugly fit into a leather pen holder in a briefcase. My design recommendation to the company would be to attach the cap to the body with a secure flexible holder along with a screw-on design, or use a swivel or hinge-operated door.
Overall - unique, practical, fun, many uses, good value for the money.
