Typical 21st century teenage supernatural fair
2008-08-30
Since I'm a fan of horror and the occult arts, I thought it was about time I checked out The Covenant. Luckily for me, I rented it.
Within the first ten minutes of the movie, it was clear to me that Hollywood made this for a certain demographic: teenagers who have short attention spans. This movie did not deliver but isn't that the norm nowadays when it comes to directing a film.
The acting was subpar, making me believe that casting for this flick consisted of going to the local burger joint at an upper middle class town and pointing a finger at those people needed for an upcoming witch movie. Truly a sad thing.
The plot wasn't all that bad but it needed professionals to develop it and not the crew that worked on The Covenant. I hate having to keep using this line but "it had so much potential" and that's the truth.
Bottom line, if you have teenagers who like the supernatural like watching the television show supernatural, then by all means buy them this DVD. However, if you want you and your kids to watch something more thought provoking but centers around the supernatural or the occult, then buy them the MGM double feature DVD of Kolchak: The Night Stalker/The Night Strangler. Even though it's dated, you simply cannot go wrong here.
Entertaining

Though this movie isn't exactly an award-wining epic or a piece of cinematic excellence, it is extremely entertaining and a perfect piece of escapist fantasy. The story line is very good as well as the special effects and the cinematography. The main actors are delightful to look at as long as you don't judge them on their acting ability. This movie won't make you question the meaning of life, but it will provide you with a few hours of entertainment.

RENNY HARLIN, OPUS 13
2008-07-12
**1/2 2006. Directed by Renny Harlin. Four friends are the heirs of four families of XVIIth century sorcerers. Keeping their powers secret to their comrades, they are soon challenged by a fifth young sorcerer who's got even more power than them. Renny Harlin's filmography contains excellent thrillers like Deep Blue Sea, Cliffhanger (Collector's Edition) or The Long Kiss Goodnight as well as regrettable works like Exorcist - The Beginning (Widescreen Edition) or this COVENANT. But I'm ready to be very lenient with the Finnish born director who has to pay his taxes, like you and me, and who'll undoubtedly give us another top notch film one of these days. This one is unfortunately already forgotten.
A Supernatural Legacy

It was an absolute pleasure watching something descent for a change I've seen this several times already and just can get enough. If you don't have this as yet you are loosing out. Buy it you will not regret it.
I just feel they could have made it a little bit longer and more fighting at the end.
The Car and Truck accident in the movie is absolutely out of this world, I love watching that part about 3 times before continuing with the movie.
Just buy it!!!!!!!!!!

The Convenant is no "Lost Boys"
2008-03-31
This movie aspires to be a current "Lost Boys" but the acting is not on the par of Sutherland and Haim. Although it is watchable I found myself wanting to fast forward through a couple points wanting it to get more interesting. The storyline of Warlocks and Witches with magical powers living around one of the old colonizing areas is not new. There take on it wasn't bad, just not original. The acting was fair but not good or outstanding. So overall if you enjoy this type movie I highly recommend you rent it before dropping any money on it. Good quality DVD with very low replayability.
Awesome

I love movies that have supernatural themes and this one wasn't too bad. What it lacked in overall plot/depth and questionable acting from some of the cast, it made up for with hot, buff guys running around fighting each other. I look forward to seeing Steven Strait in other movies, he defitantely has potential.
Wasn't as bad as I was lead to believe.

The Story: In 1692, five families in the Ipswich colony of Massachusetts hold a mysterious power that they are forced to hide from society for fear of being executed of witches. To hide themselves, they form a secret Covenant which will help protect their ancestors from being hunted down.
Fast forward to the present day and four teenagers are forced to live in the modern day with these powers, though they can't resist the temptation of using them now and again. Caleb Danvers is coming up to his 18th Birthday and will thus ascend to the next level of this mysterious power, although a mysterious 5th power is seeking to destroy Caleb and take it from him.
The Review: This was a surprisingly entertaining film which, for the teenage movie genre was very unique. The friendship between the four boys, and the development of the relationship between Caleb (Strait) and Sarah (Ramsey) are in my eyes very believable which leads you into caring for these characters on another level. Being of the story behind this movie and the overall format, I felt that the director was trying way too hard to bring up the age rating by adding some random pointless nudity and language in an attempt to have it appeal to an older audience. The scene transition I felt didn't work as well as I'd hoped, some scenes will feature some really cool and memorable moments, e.g. the scene where Caleb is driving and he hits an 18 wheeler head on. This type of scene would have you think this is worthy of a 5 star rating but then the next scene would contain some extremely corny dialogue which will make you want to bury your head in your hands in shame.
Overall this is an entertaining film that you will enjoy if you don't watch it with this expectation that you're getting a 5 star script and 5 star acting.
BEST MOVIE I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME
2008-02-19
For the record, I am a collector of good movies and I own over 2200 movies at this time (all store bought). Hollywood has been putting out a great deal of trashy movies of late, however... The Covenant is spectacular. I first saw it on Starz, I watched it four times before purchasing the movie. Since then, I have watched it eight times. I can't get enough of this movie. I am 51 years old and I recommend this movie for all ages. It was nice to sit down and watch a movie with all new faces. Hollywood needs to look for more scripts like the Covenant. I'm a little tired of the remakes they're putting out. Trust me folks, this movie may not be considered an "A-Lister" movie to Hollywood, but I say it's the best I've seen in a long time and I'd like to see them do a sequel to this one. It's a must see for sure...
