Excellent clamps for the money
2008-03-03
I work in a professional woodworking shop and I use Jorgensen clamps daily. For my work at home, however, I decided to give the Columbian clamps a try, seeing as how I could get a whole set for the price of one Jorgensen clamp. Out of the box they worked very nicely. They are built well and perform well. Since the price has gone down to $18 (I bought them at $25), I think I will pick up another set. You can never have too many clamps...

I purchased these clamps for my woodworking business. For the price, you cannot beat it; however, I would recommend for professional woodworkers to purchase the upgraded clamps individually. These clamps are not the standard clamps -- they are a little on the light side in terms of size.
Fantastic Clamp Set

I must admit, I was a bit hesitant initially. But I am really impressed with the clamp set!
The 4 larger clamps have easy-to-use releases that allow you to quickly release the clamp; the 4 smaller clamps do not, but then, when using the smaller clamps you tend to be working on pieces that require a lighter touch anyway.
The 7 smaller 'clip' clamps have just the right amount of tension; the larger ones are almost difficult to open fully, which gives you a fair indication of the compression strength.
The only reason I'm giving the set 4 stars rather than 5 is that it would be incredible to swap a couple of the 'clips' for 'clamps'. In that case, I would not hesitate to declare them perfect.
If you need a few clamps, you would do well to get this set; I've purchased others, but these are the ones I go back to day after day. Comfortable grips, secure, easy to adjust, sturdy.
In fact, I think I'm going to order some more. After all, you can never have too many good clamps!
Nice budget clamps

I'm just buying things and slowly building a nice inventory of tools for a recent old home purchase where there are a number of DIY renovations to be had. I picked theses up from Amazon based on the reviews, and of course the price. I didn't look at the picture very closely to catch that a bit more than half of this set is clips and not clamps. I can't complain at all about the product being a total novice. I'm sure if you are a seasoned woodworker, you'll find something wrong with these, but then again, you probably aren't looking for clamps in this price range anyway.
I will add that my local Woodcraft had these for $14.99, a much better deal than Amazon's $25.xx. I picked up another couple boxes so I now feel comfortable in the number of clamps that I have.
Great Deal for the Price!!!

This is a great deal for anyone on a limited budget or newly into woodworking. These are not high-end clamps, but they also don't have a high-end price tag. I was skeptical, but upon arrival I was pleasantly surprise at the quality. They seem very functional. I've been told you can't have too many clamps when woodworking.
I'm shocked

I went into the purchase of this set with strong reservations -- That's a lot of clamp for the price! I figured they'd be kinda crummy, but I could use them for unimportant projects if they were really terrible... They showed up and are actually pretty good!
Just 2 of the slip clutch bar clamps are alone worth the price of this set, but you get 8 bar clamps! The bar clamps are all metal except for the adjustment handle, which is plastic. To be totally honest, I prefer the wooden Jorgensen handles, but for the price, these are fine - the plastic handles don't seem to affect the usability at all. Oh, and each of the slip clutch clamps have removable plastic covers on either side of the clamp -- they didn't have to do that, but a nice touch.
The spring clamps are plastic, but seem to be strong - they also have pivoting grip heads, which surprised me.
I want to give them 5 stars, but I can't, as jorgensen clamps are better (wooden handles), but 4 stars is good! I'm buying a few more sets!
Good Set

This is a good set of clamps at a fantasic price. I agree with the other reviewer who stated that some of the spring clamps could be swapped out with another bar clamp or two. But considering the cost and all you get, it's worth it -- I bought 3 sets.
I found that it isn't that easy to release the slip clutch clamps when used as a "quick release" but once the tension is off the clamp, they work just fine. The only reason I don't think they work so well is because the release is small, not leaving much room for your finger(s).
All in all, this is a good set of clamps. I would recommend this product to anybody, especially those just starting out in woodworking like I am. Clamps are one of the biggest expenses in a shop as you "can never have too many clamps." You'll still need to get other types of clamps though, including your pipe clamps, parallel clamps etc.
