Editorial Review
Looking for a turn based strategy game or a strategy game based on wooden ships? Well, you're in luck--Salvo! comes to us from Shrapnel Games and for those gamers hankering for some of this type of gaming, you've got a lot to look forward to. That is, if you can get past some of the games glaring problems.Salvo! is a turned based strategy game. Each turn lasts 5 minutes during which time the player attends to his assets. Turning your 5 minute turn, you can/will move your ship and crew, fire your weapons, and attend to other managerial tasks like spreading your crew about between your ships. All this in an effort to destroy the enemy and stay alive. Sometimes it isn't just about destroying your enemy, but also about playing domination or CTF like games where you have to get your assets to certain areas of the map marked by flags and keep the enemy from taking them. Duke it out in ship-vs-ship battles or with fleets, which is certainly a funner way to go.GraphicsSalvo! is not a graphically intense game. It's a hardcore wooden warship war/strategy game and the focus was definitely put on variety, realism, tactics, etc. Not on graphics and visuals. Due to that, the game does not look very good, especially compared to anything we're used to in other strategy games. Then again, this isn't your normal run of the mill strategy game. However, it's something to keep in mind though. AudioThere isn't a great deal of sound in Salvo!. What effects there are in the game are rather bland and really forgetable. Again, you can definitely tell that the focus of this game was in the gameplay, not the audio/visual department. It's just worth knowing before making a purchase.Depth Gameplay and depth thereof are the heart of this title. With the variety of mission types, factions, locations, ships--you've got a whole lot of depth for this title, which is very important to war gamers. It's one of the strongest points in this title.
