Editorial Review
The Linksys PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter Kit PLK200 is the perfect solution for high-speed, "no new wires", home or office networking. The Powerline AV Ethernet kit comes with two Powerline AV Ethernet Adapters and two Ethernet cables. The first adapter can connect with the included Ethernet cable into a broadband wired or wireless router via the LAN port on the router, then the adapter plugs into a power outlet in the wall. The second Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter can then be plugged into a computer other networked device with the Ethernet cable via the Ethernet port and the other end of the adapter is then plugged into a power outlet within the home. The need for two power line adapters are required to share a broadband connection and access other devices connected to the network. Up to 16 other computers or devices on a network utilizing a PowerLine AV Ethernet Adapter can access the Internet connection or each other.

Good product - fit for purpose 2008-05-16
These Linksys powerline adapters are very easy to set up (actually, no set up at all to speak of), and they do what they are advertised to do. They are very good for a workstation that you don't plan to move around the room (like a laptop), and for locations where it is impractical to run a cat5 cable.

Good enough for XBOX Live 2008-05-14
I bought this because we were frustrated with the performance of our wireless network when using XBOX live. I believe interference from the cordless phone and microwave oven were causing frequent disconnects. These devices worked like a charm. Setup was easy. I didn't even read the manual. I plugged them in and they worked.

I haven't measured throughput, but performance on XBOX live is good.

Follow the directions and manage your expectations.... 2008-05-12
1. Following the directions, you give the devices a local password before you start using them on your network. After that, they just work. OK, I tried to skip the local password step. They would run for a day or two at a time and then they'd drop off my LAN. After supplying the local password, they've run fine for a couple of weeks. They do a great job of transferring media to my Tivo Series 2 (Humax) that sits on the other side of my house. Even with booster antennas of various sorts, I never got 802.11g to connect reliably in that location.

2. Linksys is up front that the listed connection speed is a theoretical maximum you probably won't reach on a regular basis. I tried moving my HP Media Vault to the other side of the powerline adapters from my desktop machines and the backups started taking more than twice as long to execute. I've moved the Media Vault back where it was.

Not cheap, but effective!! 2008-05-07
I spent many an hour trying to configure a wireless connection to a somewhat vintage Apple G4. I wish that I'd just started with this powerline product - the connection was easy to establish, as fast as it needs to be, and always on. No more futzing with problematic wireless hardware/software issues... we'll still use our wireless network for laptops etc., but for desktops in inconvenient locations I'm more than happy with the PLK200

Iinksys PLK2000 Powerline Adapter helps share internet service 2008-04-06
I am using a set of 7 LInksys PLA200's to provide very high speed internet service to 6 apartments in an old building in San Francisco. LInksys sells individual units as PLA200's and the kit of two is sold as a PLK200. The individual units are identical. The Linksys units synch up quickly and operate effectively over a wider range of outlets than the competing products I tried. Wireless equipment, including the new N series and high gain antennas, were ineffective at providing service to all apartments.

Didn't work for me 2008-07-05
I tried this product at home. After a week of use I started to run into the problem that the connection dropped frequently. Talked to Linksys support. They recommended a firmware upgrade. I managed to ruin my Linksys device while applying the firmware upgrade. Linksys support was so nice to send a free-of-charge replacement unit. However, it turned out the (refurbished) replacement unit was dead-on-arrival. Linksys support now refuses to send me a second replacement unit. I'm giving up. I did wast a lot of time with this device. I cannot recommend it to anybody.

Footnote.

Now I'm using the competing Panasonic product. This product works like a charm! It was very easy to install (no software required, just plug it in). And last but not least, it's about $40 less expensive than the Linksys product.

Waste of time 2008-06-23
Bought this to try and speed up my network. 802.11g just wasn't cutting it for hi-def streaming from my PC to my Xbox 360. Signal was worse that I had with my 802.11g network. I RMA'd this and got an 802.11n router and PC card, and it works FAR better.

They work as advertised! 2008-06-11
Bought these to transfer video between 2 Tivo boxes that were previously wireless only. Amazing the speed difference. Not an issue so far, they do work as advertised!

Fast Speeds, Whole house range, Upgrade to Firmware 3.3 2008-06-05
This is a great product for those who dont want the unreliability of wireless or dont get the range they need from wireless network. I have 4 of these adapters and I get great throughput, but as soon as I loaded firmware version 3.3 on all adapters from linksys site, the speeds and ranged improved considerably. I attached release notes on the new firmware.

Release Note for PLE200 - Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter

Firmware version: 3.3
Release Date: 5/30/2008

Bugs Fixed is v3.3 Release

1. There was an issue which led to hysteresis in UDP transfer rates. The
throughput rate would not recover when a source of power line impedance was removed.

2. On an AVLN that has Multiple Multicast protocols running on it, traffic is not correctly forwarded
after a node receives a Multicast Query.

3. The power line communications on an INT6000 would infrequently stop. This occurred with a
probability of approximately once per week. This is independent of traffic pattern.

4. The FW was not learning multicast addresses from a IGMP Join or Leave unless there was a
Query associated with the Join. The FW was also not adding the client to the group. This was
fixed to learn the address and add the client to the group without needing a Query.

5. In low data rate traffic at higher attenuations, the packets would not propagate along the power
line. This would happen at 60 dB or higher of attenuation with the default ping from the DOS
command line prompt.

6. QoS settings using the destination MAC address did not prioritize the traffic.

7. At higher attenuation, the throughput over power line would slowly drop off.

Firmware version: 1.4.5SP2
Release Date: 7/1/2007

1.) Initial Firmware released into production
