Player freezes up at startup 2008-06-11
My only concern with this player is that it occasionally freezes up during the startup and must be unplugged to restart. I should have returned the unit the first time it did it to me. Their tech service said they were not familiar with this problem and gave me a couple of things to try, which did not correct the problem, or return the unit for repair.

Outstanding piece of hardware !!!! 2008-06-01
This is probably the best DVD player I have owned. The included HDMI cable gives excellent results on my Sony Bravia 46inch LCD tv, at 1080p. This player also has the facility of 1080i.
The item is packed very well and comes in its own cloth/nylon cover - very useful for long term storage, quality of the equipment is top notch!
All output and input connectors at the back ar 22K gold plated.
Read about this player of [...] - Editor's top pick listed in professional players.I also tried the hack which converts it into an all region PAL/NTSC system and confirmed it worked by playing a PAL disc from India.
Here is the procedure:

1) Press Set Up on the remote
2) Press 9210
3) Press 0
4) Press Set Up once again
ENJOY !!

The greatest dvd player i've ever owned. 2008-05-30
I am so blown away by this player that I couldn't be happier about the money i spent on it. I feel this player is worth every penny of the price.
The picture on a flat screen 32" LCD HD Emerson. The dvd's i own that say "remastered" versions looked like i was looking out a window rather than at a tv screen. Previously i ha all kinds of problems with my dvd player telling me disc cannot be played, discs skipping mid movie, whole chapters not being playable, a disc i honestly thought was defective in a box set but everything i've thrown at this Oppo it has played and quickly too. You don't have long loading times when you first put a dvd in. I have picture cd's, avi discs, divx movies, mpegs on cd and this Oppo plays it ALL. I also found out my tv doesn't support full 1080p resolution so i'm only using the 1080i resolution and STILL getting a terrific picture.

I couldn't wait to try out the SACD decoder for an SACD 5.1 CD of Dark Side of The Moon and the sound won't play through a "Digital/Optical" Cable. According to the user manual it's not supported due to copyright resctictions of DVD-Audio and SACD. You have to use the 5.1 ANALOGUE channel output. It plays through the TV usng the HDMI connection just fine, just not the receiver withou the additional analogue connection.

The options available to you through the setup menu should fit anyone.
this player didn't take long to set up and just start watching movies.
Anything new is gonna take a little getting used to and is to be expected, but so far only having this a week or two i've never been happier with a dd player. I'm thinking a lot of the picture quality has to do with Oppo's True Life technology video processing which can be turned on or off. I reccomend keeping it on by all means.

Not worth the money or trouble for setting it up 2008-05-12
Heard wonderful reviews on amazon about this OPPO player so I ordered one, it came very fast and well presented, plus lucky me, it offered me a free HDMI cable. After fiddling with the menu and setting the player for my Sony 40XBR4 LCD TV, I got a very very nice picture, especially when compared to my five year old Sony DVD player.

What I liked about the Sony, was that it remembered where it left off, when you turned the unit off, for as many as 6 DVD's. So one day, I am in Walmart and I see the same player, but with an HDMI output for $75.00. On the spur of the moment I got it and set it up next to my OPPO. Surprise, my Sony is giving me an identical picture as the OPPO, plus it boots up faster, and I don't have to remember to eject the tray, so that it remembers where I left off; The OPPO only remembers where you left off if you remember to open the eject tray, before shutting the unit down.

So there you have it, $229 including an HDMI cable, or $75 and buy your own HDMI cable. For my needs it was a no brainer, I just hope I can save some of you folks the extra $140.00, assuming you need an HDMI cable.

The Sony does not have the Faroudja chip, but believe me, I fiddled with the sharpness settings of the OPPO and could not get a better picture than with the Sony. As for any wise guy who thinks I need glasses, I just got a new pair last week, and I stand by the picture statement I made.

Another bonus with the Sony, I can actually turn the TV on/off and other adjustments with my DVD player's remote! SAVE you dough, OPPO is probably great, but you need not spend that much.

Great Up convertind DVD player 2008-05-08
I have a big collection of DVD titles and wanted to enjoy them even in HDTV. Though HDTV usually have upconversion, they are not the best as they are intended for HD inputs. That's where a high quality upconvertor DVD player is in dire need. I googled for this and read multiple reviews of OPPO players and decided to buy one. It met the expectation and exceeded it as well.
One of the complaints I have in this globalised era is that most of the electonics products sold in USA serve only the USA system - NTSC, 110V.
This OPPO player works at 220V and supports PAL. It is universal player and I like it. Also it supports plethora of formats and it is a cool gadget for the geeks as well.

Amazing DVD for the price 2008-07-07
The OPPO is the best upconverting DVD on the market and is a steal at this price.

This unit is AWESOME 2008-06-24
The up-converting capability on this unit is ... in no other word ... AWESOME! This was an excellent choice and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to enjoy their existing DVD collection with spectacular HD quality. This unit and my Sony XBR are a phenomenal combination.

Great DVD Player 2008-06-23
I had hoped this would be a good dvd player, after having read all the reviews. Turns out it really is. I am not exactly an electronics afficianado, but even I can tell a difference with this player. All movies appear hi-def or pretty close to it!! What a blast. So glad I did not go blu-ray just yet. This will do me fine for quite a while. Highly recommend it to any one not yet ready to take the blu-ray plunge. Can't imagine any regrets.

OPPO Customer Service 2008-06-23
My OPPO DVD player arrived with a couple glitches: coming out of screen saver, hitting Play does nothing. It doesn't respond and won't play. (Yes, I updated the firmware). So I called OPPO, and I'm not making this up, was told "Just press Eject and then re-insert the disc, and when it spins up you can start play from where you last left off. This doesn't fall under warranty because the player is known to do this and is otherwise performing to specs." Second glitch: Pause and then Frame Advance confuses the player and after 3-4 frames it just freezes and finally returns you to the Main Menu. OPPO's Customer Service response: "You're probably pressing the button too fast. I'll have to ask if the engineers if they've heard about this, but this isn't a reason we'd accept as a return." I think that's pretty lame.

Great player but came with ants (very strange) 2008-06-20
Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD I bought this player in February of 2008. Loved it. Used it with a 50-inch plasma TV and could really find nothing to complain about. At the end of May I moved from Ohio to Colorado and when I began packing up the unit (kept the original packing) ants began coming out of the unit by the hundreds. While my wife was looking on in horror, I moved the unit outside and opened up the case. The inside of the unit looked like a scene from the second Alien movie. It was filled with ant eggs and ants. I saturated the inside with ant spray and left it down by the curb for three days. Then put it out to the trash. Now, I cannot be ABSOLUTELY sure these ants came with the device but in my own mind, I'm am sure. First of all we have never had an ant infestation in our home. Yes, an occasional walk-in ant or two but nothing like this. Secondly, I have never seen ants like these in our part of Ohio. They were VERY small. I don't think there is anything I can do since I basically destroyed the unit but I can tell you I'm VERY reluctant to buy a replacement.
