Good points outnumber the bad points for tuning only
2008-08-22
I had a hard time with the older Intellitouch tunders as can be read, although I think they had a quality control problem with them because people I esteem raved about them, while I and others had bad results. This tuner is pretty much what it is cracked up to be. After spending a week taking lessons and jamming with other people, my trusty Korg tuner was less than useful tuning while other folks were tuning up or playing.
So, I got this clip on.
It is easy tuning the banjo with this tuner. The dial used is much clear than the impossible to understand arrows on the old Intellitouches. Even in my dimming eyes, the backlit feature makes it easy to see where you are at least on my longest banjo.
The one thing that this is not as good as a Korg detachable (do they make an attachable) at least for banjo is that it takes longer and more sustain in a note to register a reading on this tuner. It isn't that good if you are checking for intonation in your playing on the banjo at least unless you play very slow and unbanjo like on the banjo. Quick notes that are part of playing most tunes may not register or be overwhelmed by longer louder notes.
I also use tuners to get the pitch and sometimes figure out notes from recordings. For the above reason as well as it attachable nature, this tuner is useful for this or for voice.
While this may not be good for getting a reading on your intonation while playing--not exactly the main purpose for a tuner--this is excellent for the main purpose, tuning your instrument, or at least all five of my banjos which love this tuner.
I haven't checked this out on the guitar yet.
Works on a violin, too!

This clip style tuner works on a full size violin, and I assume on the larger members of the violin family. Clip it to the bridge next to the G-string (there is just enough room to do that), and you are set to tune. You don't have to pluck very loudly...a barely audible tone will activate the tuner. So, you can tune in a noisy environment and not even have to hear the note to know it's right on.
GREAT value tuner!

I bought this for my son last Christmas so he has been using it for seven months now and he still loves it. (He has three years experience playing guitar) Any way, like others have said this tuner picks up the vibration of the string instead of the audio from a microphone like other tuners do. There is no interference from external sources as a result. The tuner is surprisingly small but very easy to read. No regrets with this purchase!

I was very pleased to find this worked on my electric guitar in addition to my acoustic. Extremely easy to use, just clamp it on and turn it on. Tuning is excellent. This is so much easier to use than my old Korg GA30 which required you to plug your electric guitar into the tuner or hold it in front of your acoustic.

In 20+ years of playing I have never used a tuner and so I was a little concerned about buying this as I had thought I would go for an in-line floor tuner. The situation was that this was readily available to me and so I thought I would give it a go. I am not sorry I did either. I was on tour in the UK and found this very helpful. There are a couple of concerns - already mentioned in previous reviews - the bottom E doesn't always give a reading but this is easily overcome with harmonic of said string. The A seemed to give me a reading of E even though it was an A - didn't find this a problem once I knew what it was doing. I guess I am a little concerned about the robustness of it on regular touring.
I found it responsive and easy to read in dimmed light. I use different tunings and found this, together with my ear, an invaluable device especially for that F# in an open D tuning. Overall, on stage it made for quicker retunings and offered me that little extra confidence that I was on mark. I have not used it to record and so cannot say how it fairs across instruments and sessions. However, on stage it proved its worth and I will be using it as regular as I play.
It is definitely worth trying - especially for the price.
Poor on low notes

The Intelli IMT-500 clip on chromatic tuner is designed to tune electric and acoustic guitars, basses, violins, banjos, mandolins and more without interference from ambient room noise, all without the use of wires, microphones or pickups. Tuning in noisy environments is a easy because the unique, flexible clamp actually "feels" the instrument's vibrational energy instead of relying on sound. And, the swivel allows a perfect view of the back lit display. The best part is that this amazing quality tuner costs a fraction of what other similar tuners cost.
Great Tuner

This is my first digital tuner. It works great and does an excellent job tuning in a loud and noisy room with other guitars.
Some owners have complained about the tuner not accurately representing the (5th and 6th) A & E strings when tuning on an open strings. The method to overcome this problem is to us the 12th fret harmonic when tuning. I've performed this on all tuning occasions using the open cord to get close and using the 12th fret harmonic for more precise tuning. When doing this it overcomes the problem with the open cord and gives you a more accurate tune lower on the neck of the guitar.
Fair, but still could be better

I've been using one of these since they came out. While it is more sensitive than the Intellitouch it suffers two fairly major issues - response time to tuning changes is slow, making tuning a frustrating effort unless you wait for the meter to do its sample and computation. The other issue is that it's really not that accurate. The Intellitouch tuners, which have their own issues, are much better on accuracy and on fast responses to tuning changes. The button rattle on the Intelli is a known issue - don't leave it on your instrument if this is a problem for you. Unfortunately, it's hard to recommend this one because of the drawbacks. That said, I continue to use mine just because there is nothing else right now for a noisy room tuner.
Excellent clip-on tuner

While the first generation Intellitouch tuners were adequate, and a technological advance over previous tuners, this is another-order-of-magnitude better. Seems to have much better transference, metering is more precise; backlight is better, and it seems to be less prone to interference from ambient noise (unless you guitar is humming from all the low frequencies the bass player is generating). Great tuner.
Love It!!

The back lit screen is easy to read, it is not difficult to use, just clip it on the head stock, turn it on and go. It's great for in the clubs, or any low light area, I have purchased two more, one for my mando and one for my upright bass, where I clip it to the bridge. I would highly recommend it.
