Compact . . .
2008-05-26
With a plethora of external sound systems available for ipods, nanos, and MP3 players in general, making a choice can be difficult. Saitek's Speaker A-100 is a very compact speaker system, with a unique design, that operates on 4 AAA batteries, with an option for AC power. While not intended for a poolside party, the output is adequate for personal listening. The sound quality is decent, with more treble than bass. The primary reason to consider the A-100 is its portability and small size.
The unit has no power switch or controls. It powers on, when a connector or cord is inserted in the audio line in jack. Volume is controlled using the attached MP3 player or audio device. Although it comes with accessory cords that enable use with most MP3 players, the A-100 probably works best with the narrower second generation ipod nano. The unit has a special two pin connector designed for use with this version of the nano, enabling the device to be attached upright above the speaker unit, resulting in a very small footprint, and relatively convenient operation.
At moderate volume, battery life is probably close to the stated 12 hours. The device works with rechargeable batteries, though life will be shorter. While perhaps not ideal as a primary sound system, the A-100 is good for short trips, times when you want something compact, or a break from ear phones. It is rather pricey, so consider carefully how much you may actually use the device.

This speaker is awesome. It has wonderful sound for such a small speaker. It comes with a cute velour carry bag. I use this at the pool and beach and it works so good.

This little speaker is awesome and boy does it deliver the sound. Easy to use, solidly made and is like a large pebble you can take with you to the park, or use in your backyard to listen to your favorite tunes sans earbuds. Love it!!
A nice bargain at most any price

I bought one of these from Woot (a discount firm), and I couldn't be happier with this. The size of this belies the sound: crisp, resonant, enjoyable. You don't get great stereo separation, but that's not the goal. Music still sounds very present and lifelike. This plays off my Pioneer Inno just great, and it's superb for listening to non-music material like THIS AMERICAN LIFE or other great NPR programs (CAR TALK guys?). Runs a long time on a charge, is easy to pocket (or keep in the car), and even saves batteries if it doesn't detect an input signal. This is a underrated gem.
Really great little speaker

The sound from this little speaker is surprising. Using in combination with my Sansa, all my music plays clear & true, and loud enough to be heard while showering. It carries well from one room to the next too. I'm no expert/audiophile - if you are just a listener like me, this is a great buy.
But, as many have said, it burns through the batteries like you wouldn't believe! I have to take a point off for no adapter, it really would be better if there was the option of plugging it in.
sounds great for the size

Excellent sound, but no AC adapter
2008-03-26
For the small footprint of this system, it produce exceptionally good sound, beats most systems like that and a lot of bigger boomboxes as well. Only problem is lack of an AC adapter. Saitek charges 17 bucks (including s/h) to send me an AC adapter.
They work Incredibly...

The Saitek speaker have a big sound for such a small size, I was surprised when I listened to so good quality sound.
I highly recomend the Saitek Spkr A-100 Personal Stereo Speaker.
Great sound from a portable speaker

I like the sound and the portable size. They do sound a little tinney in a small room but actually sound better in a large room. I would buy these agan. I like how the design is not your standard square speaker. I run rechargable batteries and plan on buying a AC adapter.
Better than I expected

While I would not classify the sound out of this speaker as world-class, I am surprised that it can produce so much from so little.
Pros-
- Better low response than expected.
- Highs are relatively crisp and not metallic
- The unit is turned on/off by inserting a jack into the speaker.
- Nice carry pouch
Cons-
- Retail price may be a little higher than expected.
- While it aids in helping to produce big sounds (through larger magnets) the unit is a litte heavy when it comes to travelling.
Overall, two thumbs up - I have not hesitation in recommending!
