BULLWORKER BETTER THAN BOWFLEX!
2008-08-16
That's right...this is a workout device I've used at two different times in my life: the first was when I was in my twenties and needed a little extra something to help grow muscle and, afterwards, to maintain it; Bullworker was what I used to do that. And now, again, some thirty years later, I'm using the Bullworker to not only help accelerate my weight-loss, BUT it is, again, being used to help tone and even build muscle WHILE increasing my overall metabolic rate. And the reason I say it is better than Bowflex? Because it costs a fraction of what one would spend on any Bowflex system and gives pretty much the same results with the same amount of effort! Thumbs are most definitely UP on this one...
No Lie About This

I owned one of these 30 years ago, but it got lost during moves. I was happy when I found out it is still available today. When I placed my order (before reading the reviews) I went with the Steelbow 28. It is a great item but if you're just starting out it is definitely not for you. I exchanged it for the regular Steelbow and I gotta tell ya, it's as good as it was 30 years ago....and the results are everything Bullworker claims them to be. Also, Hughes Marketing in Phoenix, AZ, the company that actually provided the Bullworker Steelbow to me, was very friendly and courteous to me and actually split the cost of the return shipping. I would recommend this product and thank Hughes Marketing for all of their help.
The steel bow 28

I have used the excellent old Bullworker before and the 'Steel Bow 28' (as opposed to the Steel Bow) is almost the same which is what prompted me to buy this.
However, this is a much, much stronger version of the old Bullworker. I could actually compress the old Bullworker to a reasonable extent and even though I am stronger today, I could barely nudge the '28' to even to the zero mark. Honestly, I found it too strong! This is only for the very strong. Bullworker suggests that you use only 60-70% of your strength and I could not compress it (using the handle; compressing using the cable is easy enough) even at full strength. I had to return it to exchange for the Steel Bow.
The exercise chart that I got with the product does not list all of the old exercises that I still remember. I wonder why.
Other than that, this is an excellent product that:
1. is light, small enough to be stored anywhere and portable
2. hits all muscle groups with the appropriate exercises and
3. gives you a fabulous workout.
Bullworker was willing to replace my '28' with the 'Steel Bow' and offered to split the return shipment cost.
Four stars only because it is suitable only for the very strong.
Excellent Portable Exerciser

The same very excellent quality and utility of the old Bullworker but in a more compact - and higher resistance levels - package. With the Model 28, like with other Bullworker models, one can do repitition movements, isometric holds and dynamic tension, ultra slow reps, etc.
One downside of the old Bullworker was it was on the long side for those with shorter arms. I would sometime develop strained elbow tendons from certain exercises due to the mechanical leverage disadvantage that my arms would be in when trying to compress the longer old style Bullworker (and mine was from something like the 1970s and still in very usable condition). I don't have that problem anymore with the Model 28.
The Model 28 has a very high resistance spring level so I would suggest that a beginner / intermediate trainee might want to consider instead the SteelBow as it comes with replaceable resistance level springs that can allow one to start out at lower resistance levels and replace springs as one moves up in strength levels (if I understand the concept of the SteelBow correctly).
Power and MORE

This Bullworker is very Tough. Do not let your ego get in the way on this one. It has high resistance from the very first inch of compression. The advantage of this model is two-leg exercises. The cable pull over the handle push is very different. The quality of construction is of the highest level and the chart is very informative. Introduction page insert helps very much in understanding how to use this model. If one is looking for a traditional Bullworker Power workout, this is for them. If you want diversity go with the Steel Bow, as the Level 3 spring on that model is just as hard, but the leg exercises are one leg at a time. Both models are excellent in every area.
