Excellent, light weight,cool look

This is really an excellent laptop!!!...
It is quite light weight, the keypad is elegant and with orange linings the look is great!
One hiccup is that if you need to join a domain, you need to upgrade it to Vista Business/Ultimate, which is more money and effort.
Sometimes the battery heats up a bit more...
otherwise a great stuff!!

Excelente desempeño, se apaga con una rapidez inusual, la interface gráfica es muy buena, el teclado es grande a pesar de lo pequeña que es la maquina, y muy potente para conectarse a internet, compra recomendada
Nice Pick

Nothing much to mention. An ordinary sleek laptop, compact enough for holding in the lap for longer time. But gets heated up soon and releases immense heat through the thermal vents!
Love the hardware, hate the preloaded software

I have used this Vaio for about three weeks now, and have been quite pleased with it's performance. Everything has worked as it should. The main problem I had was simply adapting to Windows Vista. However, this computer comes with so much useless preloaded software! I probably spent two hours clearing away all the AOL, CNN, Corel and other trial programs just so I could feel like it was my own computer.
The hardware is fast. The RAM is abundant. The battery lasts for a very long time, which is why I chose it over other laptops. The screen is sharp except for viewing it from an above point of view. The built-in wireless hardware is fast, simple and reliable. The case is lightweight, yet not too fragile. I love good product design!
I will use it for design presentations and on-the-road design work. I would still purchase this if I had to do it all over again.
Great Product

It's extremely well made, reliable and fast. Can generally access networks anywhere in the world, VPN works great, wireless is sensational and the keyboard and feel of the machine are very nice. Highly recommended. Its my third Vaio.
Horrible. Hard disk crashed twice in last 10 months. Sending it second time to get it replaced.

This is a horrible laptop. Looks good and sleek, but is a piece of junk. My hard disk crashed twice. First time was within two months of purchase in last May. It crashed again today, and have just now got off the call with Sony support. Need to send the laptop to get the disk replaced. Thankfully it is still under waranty. Never buy a Sony laptop. They are over priced and not at all reliable. Also this model heats up real bad, tat you cant place it on your lap after half hour of use. Also the attery drains of in little more than 2 hours. It could probably be because of Vista, but I am totally disappointed.
Consumers be aware SONY WARRANTY ISSUES
2007-11-28
I have an issue with Sony Corp. I purchased a Notebook Computer VGN-240E/B Series on 06/23/07 at the Base Exchange store at the Little Rock Air Force Base. I paid $1348.00 for it. It came with a 1 year Warranty. On the evening of Nov.18, 2007 my husband was using the PC, he then closed the lid and left it sit on the end table. About 20 minutes later I picked up the PC and opened the lid, I then took it out of the sleep mode and the screen began looking strange to me. It went completely white on ¼ of the left hand side and it looked like it had a crack diagonally across it. I then showed it to my husband and he looked at it. I then called Sony right away. I first had to explain all this to them 3 times. I told them that the computer was never dropped or banged or abused in any way. I also told them that I have no children in my home nor does the computer leave the house.
Then after about 2 ½ hours I was told to take it to fed-ex and ship it to the Sony San Diego repair center. I did that on the 11/19/07 @ 1:41 pm. Then on 11/22/07 I received an email from Sony stating that they did get the PC and they have determined that it has physical damage to it! They said I would have to pay $762.99 for labor, parts, tax if applicable and shipping to return the unit back to me. They said that this type of damage is not covered under the 1 year warranty. I tried to call them but they were closed due to the holiday! I tried to call again on 11/23/07, they were still closed.
I called again on 11/24/07 and talked to a representative that basically told me the same thing the email said. He told me to call back on Monday 11/26/07 and ask to speak to the Technician who was working on the unit (John). I did just that, I called Monday and after going through the whole issue again I finally was transferred to John in the San Diego Dept. John told me the same thing the emailed said. I told him there is no way I would settle for this because I know that neither myself nor my husband did any damage to this unit! He said the only thing they could do is ask a supervisor if he would discount the repair cost, but most likely it will only be $100. I told John no way. That $100 will only pay for the shipping cost, and I don't feel I have to pay anything because I still had 215 days left of the 1 year warranty! So after going on & on about how I know I did no damage to the unit and I should not have to be out of pocket $762.99 after just paying $1348 for this computer 150 days ago. He told me he would talk to his supervisor and see what could be done. He said he would call me back before 5pm my time. He never called... When I got home I called, they were closed for the day.
I called back on 11/27/07. After getting the run around and being told 2 times in one hour that John is on break, I finally spoke to someone. She told me the same story about only discounting it by $100. She then told me I could take it up to the next level which was National Consumer Relations. I told her sure; she then put me on hold while transferring me.
Then John picked up the phone. He was shocked that I was on the line; he was not expecting it to be me. He said he spoke to 2 supervisors and they said only $100 discount. He also said he had requested that a supervisor call me. He said I should get a call within 24-48 hours. I ask him what number he told his supervisor to call me at and he said my work and home phone numbers. He said that after I talked to the supervisor if I was no satisfied I could ask him to transfer me to the National Consumer Relations Dept. Or I could call back and be transferred and get transferred 3-4 times before getting to where I needed to.
On 11/28/07 I still had not heard from a Sony supervisor as of 4pm my time. I called Sony again. I was finally transferred to the San Diego Dept. where I talked to Robert. Robert stated that a supervisor did call me but did not get an answer so he left a message. I ask him what number the supervisor called he said my home phone number. He then read notes to me that the supervisor left on the file. When I was not happy with the offer that Sony was making ($100 discount only) I ask to be transferred to the National Consumer Relations Department. I talked to Jose-CVB9; he stated the same thing that I have been told since the beginning. That "there is physical damage, and that the 1 year warranty does not cover physical damage". I told him that Sony is claiming there was physical damage because they do not want to stand behind their product and repair this unit, and that there has to be defects in this product if simply using enough pressure to open it would cause the LCD screen to crack. But of course he denied that. He then went on to say the only thing they could offer was to give me a $100 discount. I told him no thank you, and that Sony will regret not standing behind their products sooner or later.
If anyone can help me with this issue I would be most grateful!
aesthetically pleasing

This is by far the best laptop I have owned or used for reasons other reviewers have expressed. Normally I'm just thinking functionality when I buy a computer, but I was influenced by the attractiveness of this Vaio. It is a pleasure to use in terms of functionality, but also because of how it feels and looks. However, I do have a couple of complaints about ergonomics. The two USB ports (and three other ports) are on the front of the right side, meaning that anything plugged into them (including the connector for a wireless mouse) is an obstacle in using a mouse, at least the way I use one with my laptop. The DVD drive opens on the left front side, which is an issue if you are a right handed disk inserter. A note on VISTA: try it before accepting other people's negative opinions about it. There are some compatibility issues, but this isn't unusual for a relatively new operating system. I've been using my Vaio for four months.
Less is so much more

This is an outstanding little laptop. Packed with 2gigs of RAM and an Intel Dual Core 1.66GHz cpu and a 160gig Hard drive. The design is small and weighs in around 5.5lbs. with the battery in. If you are looking for a smaller screen this comes in at 13.1". The screen is really nice, clear and bright. Although it does fade quickly when viewed at angles. There is a little bit of ghosting around the edges (which is surprising for a 13"). I owned a 15" laptop for a long time and although I liked it I just got tired of lugging it around. This is a great lightweight alternative. The design is modest, the bottom half of the laptop has a hint of metallic orange. All peripheral connectors are out in the open and easily accessible and not in the back, finally someone answered my prayers! I also like the keyboard on this one. I have never typed on a laptop keyboard that felt responsive like a full fledged desktop keyboard. To be honest that is what sold me. Nice Job Sony. Expect the battery life to be around 3-5 hours depending on use.
My only complaints about this laptop are the pack-in Sony software and the piece of garbage Windows Vista. Although this laptop is packing serious hardware Vista brings it to its knees. This is correctable though. First you could install XP on it, then look up all of the devices on line and download the drivers. If that doesn't appeal to you here is what you do:
1. Disable the Vista Indexing service.
2. Disable Windows Defender.
3. Disable Window Vista Desktop Themes.
4. Disable that hideous attempt to copy the OSX "dock" known as the Windows Sidebar.
5. Set all window and menu views to "classic"
PRESTO! Speedy laptop.
As for the Sony pack-in software, there is just too much installed and eating up cpu time. Whatever happened to install disks?? I'm not using this laptop as a media center, and that should be up to the person buying the laptop to configure. I spent about 2 hours cleaning junk off and then breaking things and then putting it back on. Some documentation on what all of the services Sony has installed would have been nice.
But hey laptops have been around a long time right? You should know by now what you're getting into when you buy one...right?
Great Product - Sleek and Stylish

A great laptop. It is stylish and sleek. Light weight to carry around and powerfull enough for entertainment. I am not able to watch AVI files in the Windows Media Player but I guess this is due to Vista and all that stuff. The hardware is very responsive and great to look at.
I would need some time to get used to Vista, but overall very satisfied with the purchase.
