Editorial Review
Easily mobile at just 6 pounds, the Toshiba Satellite A135-S2266 makes it easy to get your work done with a large, bright 15.4-inch screen. The XGA-resolution screen (1280 x 800) permits side-by-side viewing of documents for increased productivity, and is also great for watching DVD movies when you need a break. This affordable notebook PC also features a battery-sipping 1.73 GHz Celeron M 430 processor, an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, integrated 54g wireless connectivity, and ATI Radeon XPress 200M video card with up to 64 MB of shared video RAM.
This laptop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic, which delivers a safer, more reliable, and more productive computing environment. It integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: The Intel Celeron M Processor 430 is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. While it might not be as sexy as current multi-core processors, the Celeron M will helps make this an affordable business package. The 1.73 GHz speed resides near the top of the spectrum for this processor (as of January 2007). It also features a fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and good-sized 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The 80 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) has become the average size for notebook PCs. It provides enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) is a bit low compared to other business notebooks, but it's a workable start and it offers a decently fast 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add up to 2 GB of RAM for worry-free handling graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: With the included DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, you'll be able to watch DVD movies as well as burn data and your favorite music mixes to CD. It has 24x write/rewrite/read speeds for CDs, and an 8x DVD read speed.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous) as well as a volume control dial.
Screen, Video & Audio This notebook has a 15.4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3-D graphics. It delivers between 8 MB and 64 MB of video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This Toshiba Satellite has an integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless-LAN that enables you to easily connect at wireless hotspots wherever you roam. You get a decent offering of connectivity options (though no FireWire):

- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video out
- 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
- 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Toshiba A-135 Beware
2008-07-03
I bought this product from and through Amazon in March 0f 2007. When my kid went to reboot it, it asked for a bios password even though the bios was never passworded. This was listed as a Toshiba A-135 message. This thing is a ticking timebomb for anyone who needed information stored on the machine.
I am told that an authorized Toshiba dealer will make the necessary repairs for free. Of coure, if Amazon or Toshiba had told me about it, I might have been able to do this when convenient rather than on the 4th of July. Until this time, I agreed that it was a good laptop that simply required adding more RAM to properly run XP.
NICE!!!!

this is my very first laptop, and it runs great,, I am upgrading the my RAM, a litte slow when it starts up!
no compatibility, slow operation.
2007-05-12
The new Windows Vista operating system on this machine will not run some of the programs which I own and were made for XP.
This computer as sold becomes too slow to operate with the new Windows Vista operating system.
All the other features are good.
Excellent Laptop - Great for school or work
2007-04-07
This laptop provides all the essentials for getting work done. The only modifications needed after purchasing are to upgrade the RAM (I recommend adding 1 GB) and uninstalling the unneeded software/games (AOL, Office Trial, Quicken Trial, etc).
The laptop's built-in wireless card works great and the LCD display is easy to read even in daylight.
The keyboard is a little cramp and best suited for people with small hands. If you like Sony keyboards, this is a similar style keyboard.
Great for College

This product has been a member of our family for about 2 months. It makes for a great addition! It is responsive, easy to use and will give us years of use. This is the 2nd laptop bought from Amazon and mine is significantly less costly than my son's, but a wonderful buy. I'm returning to college!
Very much a quality laptop for not too much money.

Wait on Vista
2007-03-21
Hi, I got this for Valentine's Day and the computer is awesome. I have however one problem....internet accesss.
I have a DSL wireless router and the laptop is wi-fi capable so it boots right up with no problem but won't stay connected for more than an hour.
I had a previous laptop that gave no problem staying connected. Toshiba said they don't think DSL is yet compatable with Vista. Luckily the computer comes with a program called config free and you just right click on it and it resets your isp settings in 2 seconds.
And the best part is vista holds your place from when you last logged on. So I'm on a page, I lose connection, I reset the isp and the page i was trying to load automatically comes up once the internet is back.
excellent

todos los pedidos que he hecho con amazon me ha ido excelente...
muchas gracias
Nice computer, but needs a memory upgrade for Vista
2007-03-10
I'm happy with this purchase. The widescreen is nice, and the computer has worked flawlessly right out of the box. However, Microsoft's clunky memory hog Vista really drags the operating speed down, and I'm going to have to upgrade the RAM to get it running the way I want it to run. But otherwise, the price is good and Toshiba's far, far superior to my last couple of notebooks (which were both Dells).
Best Purchase I've Made This Year
2007-03-09
I got my Toshiba laptop all ready to go straight from the box. I couldn't be more pleased with the performance and the look of it. I was concerned about using Windows Vista so soon before the bugs were found and removed, but so far, Vista has been amazing. The price for this product was just right, the product itself is great, and I couldn't be happier.
One thing to keep in mind: I did have to buy a gig of RAM to make the laptop run faster, which cost me $100. If you decide to purchase this product with more than 512 RAM make sure you don't pay more than $100 for it. Still on the 512 RAM, it ran fine, just a little slow for me :)
Great product, great service, great overall experience.
