Keyboard and Mouse Pad fail
2007-09-22
This laptop has given me problems after 1month I got it. The keyboard and mouse pad simply do not respond. Mine is definetely a defective one. However, my complain is about Toshiba's customer service and technical support. I have not received proper answers, they kept me on hold for hours on the phone until they hanged up on me,.Took it to the tech. support three times, it worked after I brought it home for a while, then it went back to have the same problem until at one point the tech. representative told me He would start replacing parts randomly until He fixed the problem by chance becuase He did not know what the problem was. Be aware, that if you buy one of their computers you are likely to be stuck. Simply, Toshiba has the worse support I've ever seen (a surprise to me at the beginning, but will never buy toshiba again)
Excelent equipment

This is an excelent product. The only thing that I complain is the video card, but this machine is way beyond others models. Outstanding performance and even though its huge dimensions, is very light in weight.
I'll recommend it 100%
Toshiba's P105 line is flawed
2007-06-02
There are at least two CRITICAL facts Toshba won't tell you about their P105 line of computers:
1. It has a NONSTANDARD KEYBOARD LAYOUT, and you probably won't realize this fact until you actually see it and use it because, to my knowledge, all their product descriptions fail to mention it. People who are proficient with a standard keyboard layout will probably not like this keyboard. The right shift key has virtually disappeared relative to a standard keyboard, and the arrow keys are very awkwardly placed. This will slow down your typing speed considerably, at least until you 'relearn' typing to accommodate these handicaps.
2. Although Toshiba's own website admits that silicone keyboard protectors are "must-have protection" for a notebook computer (and they ARE essential), you can't buy one for a P105 from Toshiba - OR FROM ANYONE ELSE to the best of my knowledge (and I've spent hours looking). This means that a single drop of water spilled on the keyboard can ruin it, resulting in the need for a very costly repair. Toshiba even went so far as to have at least one sample keyboard protector made for the P105 line but they failed to have any made available to customers.
I have done battle with Toshiba over this obvious problem, which required the writing of several letters and the filing of a Better Business Bureau complaint. Toshiba to this day fails to believe any problem exists. I had always been a huge fan of Toshiba products (including computers) until I bought a P105.
Other problems: the 'Super-Multi' DVD drive failed to read ANY form of blank media and had to be replaced. A bit of web research revealed this to be a problem that wasn't at all isolated. By the time I realized the DVD drive couldn't be used to record data, I had lots of data that needed to be backed up somehow before taking the unit in for repairs... without a working disk drive backups are very problematic. Finally, for some reason my P105 frequently stalls out during web browsing and no one can figure out why... it has done this since it was brand-new. My previous Toshiba notebook computer had none of these problems (although a Toshiba DVR I own also had a faulty DVD drive).
Pleased so far
2007-05-13
I am pleased so far with the notebook. I have only had it for a short time, but I haven't had any problems with it. It's fast, and the picture is very nice. I did buy the extended warranty after reading other reviews about Toshiba products, just to be safe. I guess the only fault I can find so far is with the tech support. It is there, and you can reach them, but they don't seem to be as knowledgeable as the Dell support I get with my tower.
Excellent laptop

This is a little marvel for a reasonable price: I just needed a bigger hard drive (200 GB) and a larger screen (17") when I bought it, and I got a fully loaded, fast, efficient, elegant, ergonomic, thin and light laptop with great-sounding Harmon Kardon Stereo speakers. I have been using it extensively for 3 months (for scientific research as well as for video use) and I have not been disappointed. The fingerprint security reader works well and is a very nice addition to protect valuable data on the hard drive. The touchpad has the right sensitivity and disconnects automatically when a USB-mouse is plugged. Wifi can be turned off manually by a button to avoid any involuntary connection. The speakers are in front of the keyboard, which appears to enhance the sound quality (and power, by using the manual dial rather than the electronic sound window commands). The large 17" screen is bright, and the 1440x900 resolution allows for some crisp video viewing and for excellent working conditions without eye fatigue (which was my case with other computer screens). The DVD drive works fast and fine, and most of the software included are enough to satisfy the needs of most users. The only minus does not come from the laptop iself, but from Vista: it takes a little bit of time to get used to this new OS (which tries to imitate MacOS X's look and feel and to be more mouse-oriented, so it is a question of taste), and to the new version of Office (2007 is an improvement), but the laptop itself is almost flawless.

So disappointing

Is the problem the Toshiba or, like the previous reviwer said, is it Vista? I've had this for four days, and it has crashed three times. The first time I was reading my email. The second time I was trying to play Diablo II, a game that falls well within the specs of this system. Proceed with caution!
Way More Than I Will Likely Ever Need
2007-04-14
Purchased this sleek, elegant-looking laptop as a replacement for another Toshiba, with which I was well satisfied for nearly five years. The display is eye-popping in color and clarity, the 17" screen is nothing short of dazzling, and the 200 GB hard drive and 2 GB RAM should be more than I will ever need for word processing, financial spreadsheets, and possibly even digital photos. A few quibbles here and there, the keyboard is not easy for touch typists, I spend a lot of time backspacing to correct or add letters that did not register. The numberpad on the right, however, is a nice useful touch for finance. The touch pad is over sensitive, programs often open when the cursor passes over them, which again requires time to close them again. The real problem, however, is not the computer, it's Vista. Hard to find programs that are compatible, and, even when they supposedly are, gliches or unexpected messages pop up to announce some incompatibility. The incessant parade of messages asking permission to perform a function are also annoying. Perhaps it's too soon in the Vista game, and I should just put the laptop in the closet for six months and let software suppliers catch up. Or possibly just use it for the time being to play DVDs on that incredibly sharp screen. The four stars are for the total package including Vista, the computer without Vista would rate 4 1/2 stars.
Perfect for my needs!

I liked my Toshiba laptop so much that I bought this one for my husband two weeks later. This one has more hard drive which he needs for making picture DVD's and video. He is very pleased with it.
