A good, solid laptop at a good price
2007-05-14
I recently decided to go back to school, so I ordered this laptop to help me with my studies. Since I'm looking to free up space in my house, it will also serve as a desktop replacement.
Overall, I am very happy with its performance. The screen is large and has a very bright, crisp display. Battery consumption is decent...it can probably go a couple of hours without recharge, I usually use it while it's plugged in, so it's not a huge issue. Because it's got 2 gigs of RAM, I have yet to experience any issues with it hanging and can run many applications at once without problems.
Once in a while, the touchpad does freeze up when you press the button in the upper-right that activates those 6 shortcut buttons, but if you put the computer into sleep mode by pressing the power button, it will unfreeze and you can just press the power button again to wake it up and log back in. Hope that helps!
Enjoy so much I bought 2

I purchased a P105-S6064 in August 06. Have not had any problems with it at all. I had a question on how something worked and called tech support. Support was in US and not outsourced. Great surprise. I was so happy with the computer and friendly support I purchased the P105-S6217 last week. After purchasing I called to add the extended warranty on the earlier computer. Support again answered within a couple of minutes and with no questions at all added the 3 year extended warranty on a 9 month old computer. If you are looking for a 17" laptop, this is the way to go. I don't think you will go wrong. I didn't.
Failed component still not fixed - being told by Toshiba 1 month for repair
2007-02-03
3 months into ownership, modem fails on our P105-S6104. We contact Toshiba - they refer us to a local firm that does their repairs for the entire South Texas region. Takes them almost two weeks to say that the part is on backorder and will take over 1 month to get it in and fix this machine. I call Toshiba 800 number, and corporate in CA, they promise to phone back trying to find part faster than 1 month. So far I'm at over 4 hours of phone time with holds. They don't phone back (big surprise)and claim that, by law, they have 30 days to do warranty repairs. I point out that, as it stands now, they will take over 30 days for this repair, and request a replacement to get us back up and running again. Not their policy, I'm told and they dispute the 30 days, because they're not counting the days at the local repair depot before I started calling them directly. They also claim that they stand behind their product. Does this sound like support? Purchase Toshiba at your peril.
