No problem with Mac OS x
2008-08-25
I read the reviews of the HD-338D-U2 out of curiosity. I'll simply say that I have had this enclosure for almost two years. I never have used the little disc that came with it because I've backed up the few directories I want manually. I'm a manual reader, so I followed the instructions in it for the physical part of installing the drive in the enclosure. (Although I didn't have to--I've installed dozens of drives.) Mac Tiger OS recognised the drive, (a Seagate 250 GB), with no problem at all. When I recently upgraded to Mac Leopard, again the drive was recognised immediately and operates with no problem. It has been an inexpensive, attractive, well-performing, and well-packaged enclosure, which even came with a small Phillips screwdriver, which I didn't use. :)
NO NTFS support by design

The "manual" categorically states that this enclosure does not ssupport NTFS-formatted drives. Unfortunately, this makes the enclosure useless to me.
I wonder whether the other people who couldn't get the enclosure to work also had NTFS drives.
Twink Twink little star!!!

I have had this component for 2 days, and what a relief, I am no longer using my main computer at all, and now can use my laptop(Powerfull one) to do all of my work, and now have an extreme 10 Terabytes(100,000 Gigz) of backed up data, encoded on a hard drive I can store, I just duped 200 DVD's onto my backup drive instantly, and no longer need ooodles and ooodles of DVD disks for my media production.
Anyhow, you need to tweak it a bit, it took me a short 10 minute learning curve, make sure your hard drive is accessible for IDE not SATA or ATA, it can be formatted(if you need to) in FAT32 or NTFS, doesnt matter.
FIRST install the software, do not plug in the device.
NEXT make sure your CPU accepts USB 1.0 or 2.0, check your settings!
JUMPER settings on the actual hard drive MUST be set at MASTER or PRIMARY(Slave only if you have multiple drives already on your current system). Check your hard drive jumper(little white plugs on the drive), and the instructions on the drive, OR online if your not sure, you cannot damage the drive, or lose your data, if you switch the jumpers. These are just connection points for telling the computer which drive is assigned to what.
The most important step: DO NOT PLUG IN THE DRIVE INTO A HUB! Plug directly into your PC or LAPTOP. This is important for CPU recognition of the drive, initialization of your drivers, software, and functionality.
I can help those in need, just send me a message, OR you can mail me your cases for shipping and handling, and I will be your friend for LIFE!!
This is a jewel! For any novice, this is not for you. For someone experienced, with setting up, and optimizing their systems capabilities, this is the perfect, economical, and proven choice.
Now you can actually set up a mini network, domain servers, and better yet, web servers from your house or workplace with this accessability and technology in your hands.

Purchased this enclosure in July - have not been able to get it to work correctly yet. Tech support in email only - NO PHONE SUPPORT. I have installed and uninstalled 4 versions of the software for this enclosure numerous times each and still cannot get it to work correctly. Stay away from this enclosure.
