Great Concept; Terrible Equipment
2008-02-15
I used to purchase/rent videos through Clean Films. I loved the editing quality Clean Films offered, but since they are no longer in business, a friend recommended ClearPlay. ClearPlay comes up slightly short of the Clean Films editing quality, but I still love the concept and in fact have enjoyed the experience for as long as the DVD player worked. The problems with the DVD player started by not responding to the remote, then moved on to stating there was no filter found, though it was downloaded and the player would play the ClearPlay version of the movie. However, it has finally come to the point whereas now I can't even get it to open/close to watch the DVDs anymore. Good Concept, but I wish the hardware was up to par.
A Must Own if you have Children!

The Good: The filtering is wonderful. The concept is perfect, and it's well implemented in this product. You're able to download filters, put them onto a USB storage device, and load them into the player. It lets you watch movies without the stuff you'd rather not expose your children to. When the kids aren't around, you can still watch movies the way the director intended. The menu is easy to navigate, and the filters are easy to load. The DVD player supports component video, and optical audio out. It does not, however, support 5.1 surround.
The Bad: As other customers have stated. My first clearplay DVD player stopped working after just two weeks. It started off being fickle, and eventually wouldn't play DVDs at all. I took it back to Target, and they swapped it out for a new one with no questions asked. I also only paid $48.00 at Target, whereas it's listed here for $100.00
Bottom Line: If the one I own now breaks, I'll buy another, and another. The filtering options are something I can no longer live without.
finally!!! This technology is long overdue!

As a DVD player I found it to be the smoothest playing player I have ever used. (out of at least 15 players) Typically DVD players have some lag beginning the Fast Forward function and often when hitting play while fast forward results in missing the desired playing point. (the player will go further) This player is very responsive in this area, I was impressed.
There are some glitches in the ClearPlay software, but overall it filtered quite well. The movies I tested it on edited known scenes and language with ease. Sometimes it is noticeable that something was removed, sometimes not. For years my family has had to look up family reviews, ask a neighbor who has seen it, and had to hold the remote during the entire length to protect the young eyes in the room. This player finally gives the peace of mind. One of the setttings for filering includes "Mushiness", so the people at ClearPlay are trying to be thorough.
One oversight I reported to Clearplay and I am hoping they will add as an update to the DVD's update-able software: There should be an option to set the player to play any movie if the filter is downloaded, and to conversely not allow play of a film unless the required filter is present. The way it is now there are these options for control: set parental setting to a particular rating (ie; "G" "R" "PG") and this will require a passcode before playing a film with blocked rating. BUT, once you punch in the code you can choose to play unfiltered or filtered version. Same with the parental setting off. If you pop in a DVD, your child could choose to watch the unedited version. My suggestion would guarantee that only filtered films would be watcheable regardless of rating. It is easy to download them and plenty of memory to fit filters for your entire DVD library. Just my two cents.
It was a nice convenience to be able to play digital pics from a memory card, but it was a little slow transitioning between shots. But the primary reason for its purchase was not to view photos, so its no deal breaker, more like a perk that it can play photos.
Great Movie Filtering DVD Player
2007-08-19
I have owned several ClearPlay DVD players, and this USB version is easier than any others I have used. I recently purchased two of these from Target, and I did not experience any of the problems mentioned by the negative reviewers. I did have problems with a dirty DVD, but they went away when the DVD itself was cleaned. I had to use trial and error to connect the player to my TV. I connected the video using the component connectors, and the video was monochrome until I figured out how to use the player's menu system to configure component output. I also had to experiment to figure out that the player's "coaxial" output jack was what I needed to connect to my TV's digital audio input. The plastic door that covers the USB and media card slots is very flimsy and comes off too easily. On the whole, I am very glad to be able to watch movies without 99% of the bad language and 85% of the inappropriate scenes. It is not a perfect player, but it is a good value. I hope ClearPlay plans to make an upconverting and/or a high-definition DVD player soon.
Worst DVD Player Ever

The filtering technology in this DVD player is the only plus. Great idea. However, we have owned this player for 2 months and they are replacing it for the second time. The 1st player had many problems such as turning on the subtitles by itself, not being able to read scratched discs, skipping in the middle of the movie by itself, distorted picture, and other spontaneous malfunctions. Clearplay replaced that player and we've been using the new one for a week when it started freezing in the middle of the movie menu and not starting the movie when you navigate through the movie menu (it would cycle through the previews and not play the movie unless you selected a specific chapter to start at). The problems keep getting worse or new ones keep coming up. Clearplay is now replacing it for a second time. This player is only under warranty for 90 days so if it goes bad after this (which i'm assuming it will), we're basically out of luck. Customer service at Clearplay was ok, they were nice and professional, however they failed to respond to a few of my emails which i finally had to call about in order to get some information. Would not recommend this player at all. It is a complete waste of money.
Great Concept, Terrible Quality

We were ecstatic to hear that Clearplay came out with a DVD player that featured USB & SD card slots along with digital audio I/O. However, this thing has been nothing but trouble. For starters, even when it does work, it has an annoying menu system that pops up every time you select a menu option (this is especially annoying for games like Scene It). In addition, it doesn't play scratched DVD's very well. But the biggest problem is that both DVD players I have purchased have broken within the first two months I've had them. First they suffer from erratic playback (skipping chapters, locking up, etc..) and finally they just won't play any DVD's whatsoever. Thankfully I also have an Xbox, so I can just play DVD's on that for the time being.
On the good side, the Clearplay filters are wonderful, though it does seem like they miss some things now and then (especially on the sensual level). The menus offer different levels of filtering, but I haven't noticed any significant difference whatsoever when choosing different levels. The video and audio quality seemed great as well. Overall, I hope they come out with a new model, that overcomes the software and hardware limitations of this model.
Fianlly - a SAFE way to view movies

We bought this several days ago and have already watched several movies on it. I love it! Gone is the cursing and inappropriate scenes! Not only did I feel uncomfortable watching movies with my kids in the room - I hated the way I felt after listening to swearing and watching some awful sexual scene that had nothing to do with the story line! Why do they do that? Well, now you can take control with this product! Thank you ClearPlay!
Best way to watch DVD's
2007-06-22
We have had this player for several months. There is no better way to watch movies. This DVD player removes almost all of the garbage that Hollywood continues to put in even PG and PG-13 movies as well as for the R rated movies. I can now watch movies without being embarrassed to see them with my children present. I can now control exactly what is in and what is out. There are many different settings available that allow each individual viewer to determine what is offensive and what is not. My family will now wait for most of the new movies to come out on DVD so that we can feel comfortable watching them knowing we don't have to see the things we don't feel appropriate. I recommend this player to everyone!
